Description
AND FIRST OFFER VALID UNTIL 31/12/2026 - DELIVERY SPRING 2027
The Château Lagrange 2024 is an exceptional Saint-Julien, born from a year that pushed the limits of resilience and craftsmanship. Despite a challenging growing season, marked by abundant rainfall, intense mildew pressure and a cool spring, Château Lagrange managed to create a sublime wine that reflects the balance between tradition and modern precision.
Origin and terroir Château Lagrange
The 118-hectare vineyard lies entirely within the Saint-Julien appellation, spread over two slopes with a clay-limestone subsoil and a gravel-gravel topsoil. This combination of soil structure and north-south orientation provides optimum drainage and sun exposure – an ideal breeding ground for Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot.
The 2024 blend is 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot – the highest Cabernet content in Lagrange’s history. The Cabernet excelled with small, concentrated berries that delivered structure, freshness and elegant complexity. The Petit Verdot added zesty notes, colour and volume, while the Merlot brought a touch of roundness
Vinification and maturation Lagrange
Each plot was harvested separately and vinified in 102 temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. A double sorting – by hand and via optical cameras – guaranteed only the best fruit. After a gentle extraction and co-inoculation for malolactic fermentation, the wine matured for 21 months in French oak barrels, 50% of which were new
Tasting note of the 2024 Lagrange Saint-Julien 3e GCC
The 2024 presents itself as a Grand Vin of rare harmony, with silky tannins, deep aromatic complexity and remarkable balance. Expect notes of blackcurrant, violet, cedar and spice, with a long, layered finish. Despite its youthful intensity, this wine offers a wide drinking window, starting from 2029 and running through 2050 or beyond.

Professional Reviews
James Suckling
(94-95) A wonderful Lagrange from this challenging vintage. This has excellent depth and complexity, showing vivid berry fruit, blackcurrants, tapenade, spices and minerals. Crunchy and succulent with medium to full body and a long, succulent finish. Real poise.

“It was a rainy spring and a rainy September,” winemaker Matthieu Bordes told me. “But overall, it was not too cold and much warmer than 2021, cooler than 2023. It was an earlier vintage compared to 2021 and later than 2023. The yield is very small at 26 hl/ha, which made it easier to ripen. A lot of leaf removal was necessary to increase sun exposure. We harvested from September 26 to October 6 at 26 hl/ha, the lowest ever after 1991, sorting around 10% of the fruit at the reception using optical sorting and so forth (we were the first to use this in 2009 with Haut-Brion). It was vital to pick quickly so that you could wait if necessary. We can pick up to 18 hectares in a day. We were careful during the vinification process, fermenting between 25 and 28°C depending on the parcels with the aim to produce something smooth and harmonious. I did some reverse osmosis on the Merlot and much less on the Cabernet Sauvignon. The Grand Vin is matured in 55% new oak (20% for Les Fiefs), but I am not sure if I will age it for the full 21 months.”

Drinking Window
2029 - 2044
The 2024 Lagrange is quite promising. Deep and vibrant in the glass, with terrific energy, Lagrange offers fine depth and plenty of harmony to match. Dark red cherry, spice, new leather, tobacco and incense resonate on the layered finish. Tasted two times.

Drinking Window
2030 - 2050
The 2024 Lagrange consists of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon (the second highest ever), 10% Merlot (the lowest ever) and the remainder Petit Verdot, with 11% vin de presse. Matured in 55% new oak, this has a tightly-wound bouquet that demands a little more coaxing than the Les Fiefs, though this was on a day when, for some reason, some Saint-Julien samples required it. The palate is medium-bodied and obviously driven by the dominant Cabernet, with grainy tannins and black fruit laced with graphite and cedar. Cohesive on the finish with just the right amount of sapidity, this is obviously not in the league of the benchmark 2022, but it constitutes a successful wine for the vintage. - By Neal Martin on April 2025

The Japanese group, Suntory, acquired the domain in 1983. Marcel Ducasse was then recruited together with Kenji Suzuta to carry out the complete restructuring of the vineyard and a spectacular renovation of the entire estate. This first step was to mark the rebirth of Chateau Lagrange. After twenty years of dedicated work, as well as human and technical investments, Lagrange is once again one of the top Grand Cru Classé , focusing over the last twenty years on the production of refined, elegant and expressive wines, in the best Saint-Julien style but also with production methods that substantially reduce the ecological impact.
Located entirely within the Saint-Julien appellation, the Lagrange vineyard stretches in a single block over two north-south rises of Gunzian gravelly soil. In parts large and coarse and in others finer, this gravel is combined with sand or iron-rich clay, depending on the plot. With a height of 24 meters, the center of the domain marks the highest point of Saint-Julien. The estate covers 182 hectares (450 acres), of which 118 hectares (292 acres) are under vines. Most plots have a drainage system.
