Château L'Évangile and its rich history
Château L'Évangile is one of the historic estates in the Pomerol appellation in Bordeaux. The estate was already mentioned in the 18th century as "Fazilleau" before acquiring its current name in the 19th century. Since 1990, Château L'Évangile has belonged to the Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), a guarantee of absolute quality and attention to terroir. The vineyards border directly on those of the renowned Château Pétrus, highlighting the exceptional character of this location.
Location, climate and wine style in Pomerol
Located on the Right Bank of the Bordeaux region, Pomerol enjoys a temperate maritime climate. The soils consist of clay and gravel with iron-rich substrata, which contribute to the power and elegance of the Merlot. Château L'Évangile produces wines with depth, finesse, and exceptional aging potential. The 2024 vintage benefited from a complex growing season with mild summers and a long ripening period.
Grapes, harvest and vinification of Château L'Évangile 2024
The 2024 vintage blend consists of 80% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. Buds opened in late March, flowering occurred around June 6th, and the veraison (color change) began on August 1st. Harvest took place from September 18th to October 2nd, carefully staggered to ensure optimal ripeness. Despite the humid spring and the color change during flowering, the quality remained high thanks to meticulous care and organic methods. The grapes were vinified plot by plot and then aged in French oak barrels with a balanced use of new wood.
Color, aroma and taste of Château L'Évangile 2024
In the glass, Château L'Évangile 2024 displays a deep ruby red color with purple reflections. The bouquet opens with notes of black cherry, fresh figs, graphite, and a hint of violet. After swirling, aromas of cedarwood, fresh herbs, and subtle mineral notes emerge. On the palate, the wine is powerful yet polished, with silky tannins and precise acidity. The long finish carries notes of mocha, plums, and a hint of white pepper. The Château L'Évangile 2024 showcases the power of Pomerol with a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

The 2024 L'Evangile has turned out beautifully, reflecting this estate's recent evolution (refining barrel choices and integrating foudre into the cellar) and its comparatively young vineyard's propensity to perform well in years with minimal hydric stress. Offering up aromas of cassis and blackberries mingled with notions of violets and black tea, it's medium to full-bodied, lively and layered, with a velvety attack, good depth at the core and a persistent finish. This blend of 80% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon attained 13.5% alcohol.

Wow. This is really something for the vintage. Such a long finish, while being subtle and sophisticated with wonderfully silky tannins that are so fine and very long. It's medium-bodied with a beautiful, compact palate from the beginning to the end, including the mid-palate. The finish shows walnut, hazelnut and dark-chocolate character. Exceptional. 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc.

From: Event Horizon: Bordeaux 2024 Primeur (May 2025)
The 2024 L'Évangile was picked from September 18 to October 2. This has a "cool" bouquet with blackberry and bilberry scents and a little marine influence with a hint of oyster shell. The palate is medium-bodied with expressive Cabernet that imparts subtle graphite and tobacco notes. Again, this is fresh, quite structured, not long and perhaps a little tannic on the finish, but it will flesh out during its élevage in 50% new oak.

There is always one important estate inexplicably omitted from my itinerary. and this year it was Château l’Evangile. Fortunately, I spotted winemaker Juliette Couderc, where else, but out in the vines. I hopped out of my car and arranged a last-minute visit. “We suffered huge losses in volume, 60% to 70% in the worst-affected parcels,” she told me in the vat room. “The average was 40%. At the end of June, we realised the extent of the damage, but this was from coulure. Mildew was not such a big deal. So, the average yield is 21 hl/ha. July and August were pretty dry, and there was a long véraison. The gravel was important to keep the freshness and acidity in the Merlot. We started the harvest from September 18, and we had to hurry. On September 25, it rained. I remember it well as it was my birthday, though by then, the Merlot had been picked. We ended with 13.6% to 13.7% natural alcohol; the fruit was riper than expected. The fruit from the sandy soils for Blason de l’Evangile was not ripe, so the picking there was delayed and the fruit had to be sorted much more, cutting some clusters in half. We used manual sorting in the vineyard and posted more people on the sorting line before the destemming—four or five instead of two, plus we also used optical sorting. We changed the maceration, lengthening to 28 days instead of 22 days. Vinification was relatively easy, and this year we aged 25% in 26-hectolitre _foudres.”

Chateau l'Évangile is a Bordeaux house located on the very famous Pomerol plateau. The winery owned one of the first vineyards of the Pomerol. The Château L'Évangile estate was founded by the Léglise family from Libourne. They were actively involved in the construction of the vineyards of Pomerol in the middle of the 18th century. L'Évangile appeared in the 1741 register under the name of Fazilleau.
At the beginning of the 19th century, the estate was already close to its current state, with an area of about 13 hectares, when it was sold to a lawyer named Isambert. This lawyer named the estate "L'Évangile". The estate was purchased in 1862 by Paul Chaperon. His descendants, the Ducasse family, remained the owners of the estate until 1990. Paul Chaperon continued to build the estate's reputation and built the residence of L'Évangile in the style of the Second Empire. In the second edition of Cocks Féret in 1868, L'Évangile is listed as a "Premier Cru du Haut-Pomerol".
After the death of Paul Chaperon in 1900, the estate was run by his descendants. In 1957, Louis Ducasse took over the estate, which had fallen into disrepair at the time and was also damaged by the frost in 1956. He managed to replant the vineyard and eventually restore it to its former glory. In 1982, his widow Simone Ducasse continued to manage the estate.
In 1990, Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) acquired the L'Évangile estate from the Ducasse family. They wanted to ensure that the property was maintained to the same high standards as DBR's. The initial influence of DBR (Lafite) included a more refined selection of the Grand Vin and the creation of Blason de L'Évangile as a second wine. Much work was also done to improve the vineyard with a restoration and (partial) renewal plan launched in 1998. The complete renovation of the barrel room and cellar, which was completed in 2004, completed the new state of the property.
The vintages from 1995 to 2005 were a very remarkable decade and crowned the successful work. The vintages 1995, 1996, 2000 and especially 2005 were judged to be truly exceptional!
Chateau l'Évangile has a vinification method where tradition and modern techniques go hand in hand. In 2004, the barrel room and cellars were completely rebuilt to make them more suitable for plot selection. The grapes from each plot are kept separate in batches in order to assess their potential for use in the Grand Vin at the end of fermentation. Traditional and modern winemaking methods are closely linked in all activities of the winery. The fermentation in barrels is carried out using the traditional method of pumping over and controlled maceration, with frequent tasting. Once fermentation is complete, the wine is aged for 18 months in oak barrels.
A strict selection is carried out in the production of Château L'Évangile and the second wine, Blason de L'Évangile. The average production of Château L'Évangile and its second wine Blason de L'Évangile is 5,000 cases.
