Of all Bordeaux's premier crus, Haut-Brion is the most charming, always elegant and refined, and always in peak condition, whether young or old. Haut-Brion is the oldest and historically most colorful winery in the Gironde region – it was here that, in the 17th century, the first single-vineyard Bordeaux was made, first served in London coffee houses, and praised by many prominent writers. In 1935, the estate was purchased by Clarence Dillon, an American banker. He invested heavily in renovating the chai and the vineyard. In 1960, Haut-Brion became the first premier cru to replace the wooden barrels with stainless steel tanks. In 1983, the Dillon family purchased the adjacent Château la Mission Haut-Brion.
Wine region and climatic conditions in 2024
The 2024 vintage was characterized by a cool growing season, preceded by a mild and wet winter. This led to early bud break, although growth was later hampered by persistent rainfall. During the summer, interventions such as defoliation improved air circulation around the grape clusters. Thanks to a dry northeasterly wind in early September, the grapes were able to dry well and ripen optimally. The harvest took place between September 17th and October 4th, with hand selection and strict sorting in the cellar.
Blend, harvest and maturation of Haut-Brion Rouge 2024
The blend of this vintage consists of 47.2% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37.5% Merlot, and 15.3% Cabernet Franc. The alcohol content is currently 13.2%. The wine was fermented in temperature-controlled vats, followed by aging in French oak, 75% of which is new. The careful vinification and aging contribute to the refinement and aging qualities for which Haut-Brion is known.
Color, aroma and taste of Château Haut-Brion Rouge 2024
In the glass, the wine displays a deep, dark garnet color. The nose is powerful and intensely fruity, with notes of ripe red and black berries. Swirling reveals floral and spicy aromas, along with subtle oak notes. On the palate, the attack is full, juicy, and elegant. The structure is supple, with silky, ripe tannins and a great harmony between fruit, acidity, and oak. The wine fills the palate with a generous, velvety texture and has a long, promising finish.

The 2024 Haut-Brion is more perfumed than La Mission Haut-Brion, unfurling in the glass with aromas of raspberries, cassis, dark berries and spices mingled with elegantly floral touches. Medium to full-bodied, layered and sappy, it has a firm texture and powdery tannins, leading to a long, spicy and lead pencil-inflected finish. Composed of 47.2% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37.5% Merlot and 15.3% Cabernet Franc, this vintage features one of the highest proportions of Cabernet Franc in recent years—comparable to vintages such as 1993, 2004, 2010, 2011 and 2020—and should gain harmony with the élevage. In the context of the vintage, this is a notable success, owing in large part to Haut-Brion’s intramural position in Pessac, where the estate’s terroir benefits from slightly warmer average temperatures than properties located outside the city, contributing to more complete ripening of the grapes.

This year, the style of Haut Brion shows through with transparency, beautiful balance and precision. Fine austerity, with excellent minerality, dark olives and red and dark berries. Structured on the mid-palate. Beautiful depth for the vintage, with really fine-grained tannins and a lengthy finish that lingers. So much vibrancy and finesse. A classic vintage.

From: Event Horizon: Bordeaux 2024 Primeur (May 2025)
The 2024 Haut-Brion, which contains more Cabernet Franc this year from a high-performing vat, has an altogether more polished, powerful and fruit-driven bouquet than La Mission at the moment. Black and blue fruit, black olive and subtle sea spray scents emerge with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied, vibrant and focused, with fine tannins and an engaging underlying sapidity coming through with more weight and sustain on the finish. This is a very capable Haut-Brion that will not kowtow to the challenges of the 2024 season—rather, it seems to relish them.
- By Neal Martin on April 2025
“This year, we could not avoid mildew. It came when the grapes were fragile and sensitive. That entailed a lot of work in the vineyard. Flowering was uneven, with coulure and millerandage. Concentration really only came with a heatwave on July 27, but before that, it was quite cold. At harvest, we decided to focus on the ripe parcels, which means the yields are quite low: 25 hl/ha. Yields were more normal for the whites, at 38 hl/ha. We picked from September 2 to 10 for the whites, the reds from September 17 until October 4. Also, we used different sorting systems: densimetric, optical and manual. We were careful with the extraction, with shorter pump-overs—three-quarters of the vat were pumped over every six hours to avoid tough tannins. We have a little more Cabernet, as the Merlot was affected by the mildew. At Quintus in Saint-Émilion, there were fewer problems with mildew. But, it was more complicated with rain at the end of the harvest, so the picking took place quickly, from September 24 to October 4.”

From: 2024 Bordeaux En Primeur: The Razor’s Edge (Apr 2025)
The 2024 Haut-Brion is dark and brooding in demeanor, but obviously not as tannic or forbidding as it can be in the early going. All the Haut-Brion signatures are very much present, but they're portrayed in a decidedly understated style that speaks to the personality of the year. Black fruit, scorched earth, spice, tobacco and leather build with time in the glass. The 2024 is a super-classy Haut-Brion. There's gorgeous substance here.
