Description
Château Haut-Bailly 2024: a timeless classic with modern precision
The Château Haut-Bailly 2024 is the fruit of craftsmanship, terroir and tenacity. In a year full of rain and challenges, the Haut-Bailly team, with its characteristic positive spirit, has created a wine that effortlessly combines elegance and depth. A Grand Cru Classé from Léognan that remains true to its signature: refined, structured and harmonious.
Climate and vineyard
After two warm, dry years, 2024 was a year with an ultra-oceanic climate . A mild, wet winter led to early bud break on March 20. Spring brought high humidity and mold risks, which were controlled with experience and precision. Fortunately, flowering in May took place under ideal conditions.
The summer was relatively dry with marked temperature differences: cool nights and warm days. This ensured good ripening and preservation of freshness in the grapes.
The harvest ran from September 18 to October 4. Thanks to strict selection in the vineyard and cellar, Haut-Bailly was able to make a wine that is pure and representative of its terroir.
Vinification and maturation
Vinified per plot in stainless steel and concrete vats,
Gentle extraction and maceration at 25–26°C,
Malolactic fermentation on stainless steel,
Maturation: 16 months in French oak , 50% of which is new , from seven different barrel makers.
Assembly and style
58% Cabernet Sauvignon – structure, tension, finesse,
40% Merlot – suppleness, fruit, charm,
2% Cabernet Franc – floral elegance.
Alcohol percentage: nb | Maturation: 16 months
The wine opens with a fragrant bouquet of flowers, red and black fruit and a subtle touch of wood . On the palate it is silky and beautifully balanced, with a refined structure and a long, energetic finish. The wine is already charming, but clearly has the DNA for long bottle aging.
A wine for festive tables and classic dishes such as rack of lamb, game with figs, duck breast or mushroom risotto. Also excellent with matured cheeses or solo on special occasions.
A wine of the times, and for the future
The 2024 vintage is proudly described at Haut-Bailly as “Singin' in the Rain” – a reference to the joyful and resilient attitude with which the team brought this complex vintage to success.

Château Haut-Bailly Pessac-Léognan 2024
A soft, light Haut-Bailly from this challenging year, with lots of red cherries, red berries, red bell peppers and fresh herbs. Quite approachable, with a medium body and soft-grained tannins. Well-judged soft extraction makes this likely approachable right after release. Not ambitious, but well balanced, juicy and refined. Brambly and lively. Early harvest? 58% cabernet sauvignon, 40% merlot and 2% cabernet franc.

From: Event Horizon: Bordeaux 2024 Primeur (May 2025)
The 2024 Haut-Bailly was picked from September 25 to October 4 and matured in 50% new oak, possibly with a shorter élevage. As usual, it deserves patience at this stage as it gradually opens and coheres with aeration. This has a perfumed bouquet built around redcurrant, cranberry and wild strawberry fruit. It's quite floral in style with finely delineated touches of freshly-rolled tobacco and wilted rose petal. The palate is creamy on the entry and velvety in texture, with finely chiseled, lace-like tannins. It is very well balanced with one of the few sensual vintages that you will find from this year. This will be much earlier drinking than other vintages, but that does not detract from what will be one of the most pleasurable 2024s to drink.

Véronique Sanders greeted me at Haut-Bailly on my afternoon dedicated to Pessac-Léognan. “Debudding was on March 20, quite early,” she explained. “At our weather station, it was not a cooler year on average, equivalent to 2001 and 2008. But it was cooler in the sense that the low temperatures were lower. We have an early terroir. The last week of May was dry, which was the week of the flowering, so we did not have coulure or millerandage. September was rainy, and we picked from September 18 until October 4. The vinification was normal, though we noted that the malolactics were quite fast.”

From: 2024 Bordeaux En Primeur: The Razor’s Edge (Apr 2025)
The 2024 Haut-Bailly is an elegant, classy wine. Soft, sensual contours lend notable charm. The 2024 is an especially aromatic, perfumed Haut-Bailly. Its mid-weight structure is best described as Burgundian, for lack of a better term. Silky tannins frame it all in style. Readers should expect a decidedly understated, quiet Haut-Bailly.

Soil research experts have found that Château Haut-Bailly has one of the finest terroirs in the Pessac-Léognan. Great wines are created by the interplay between soil, location, climate and people. The wines have always been good, but have increased even more in quality in recent years. Haut-Bailly is known for its softness and silky texture. The wine has incredible potential for refined tannins and softly sweet, complex fruit nuances.
The vineyard is managed according to strict traditions and chemical herbicides are never used. Spraying is carefully limited, the soil is plowed and weeded with hoes, and the grapes are picked entirely by hand. The vinification takes place in a fermentation chamber with 26 thermo-regulated cement tanks of different sizes (ranging from 30 to 120 hectoliters). These specially adapted barrels ensure that the grapes, grown in different parts of the vineyard, are kept completely separate from the moment they are picked until the vinification.
The winemaking process takes place in cement tanks, while blending is done in stainless steel tanks - a great example of how tradition and modernity go hand in hand at Château Haut-Bailly. Alcoholic fermentation lasts eight to ten days and is followed by maceration. This process takes about three weeks during which the wine never overheats. In this way, a perfectly balanced wine is achieved.
