Description
Château Haut-Bailly has a distinct style that combines classic with modern and elegance, finesse and softness with structure. The smoothness of the tannins provides elegant and complex aromas. Château Haut-Bailly can be kept for many years, but it is also a wonderful wine to drink now. This Château Haut-Bailly receives much praise from wine experts who agree that this Château Haut-Bailly offers complex pleasure and has a richness that is not aggressive but also not flashy. All these beautiful attributes that this wine has at its disposal mainly come from the selection process of the grapes and the landscape and the climate in which the grapes grow.
Experts in soil research have found that Haut Bailly has one of the finest terroirs in Pessac-Léognan. Great wines are created by the interplay between soil, location, climate and man. The wines have always been good but have improved even more in recent years. Haut-Bailly is known for its softness and silky texture. The wine has incredible potential in refined tannins and softly sweet, complex fruit nuances. The 2022 vintage was marked by extreme climatic conditions, but everything leads Haut Bailly to believe that this is the case announces, or foreshadows, the climate that we will encounter in the coming decades. What seems extraordinary today will become, if not the norm, then at least usual tomorrow. But also, the decisions that are made year after year about the management of the vineyard. The choice made at Haut-Bailly for sustainable viticulture by preserving an old vineyard takes on its full meaning under extreme conditions. The deep roots of the vines, due to their age and the work done on the soil, give them a remarkable capacity for resistance.
The months of September to November were warm and dry and the harvest started early in ideal conditions. From 7 to 14 September it was the turn of the Merlots, and from 19 to 27 September the Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2022 vintage is a blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 5% Petit-Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc. The winery, inaugurated at the end of 2020, has been designed and developed to offer the best in terms of climate change. The new facilities, including cold rooms, a wide variety of vats for vinification per plot and an underground maturation cellar, allow Haut-Bailly to both preserve and refine the fruit and also to create wines that combine power and elegance, density and freshness. This 2022 vintage is therefore a double satisfaction. The satisfaction that they have produced a very good wine and the confidence that we will continue to produce it in the years to come.
FACT: Under the tab: Attachment you will find the official factsheet and we will send it to you digitally when you order this wine. Also worth mentioning that we buy the (Bordeaux) wines directly and never through intermediaries because then we do not know which journeys the wine has made and how it has been treated. The wines come from the cellars of the Chateau directly to our conditioned Warehouse in Dordrecht where all our wines are stored .

The 2022 Haut-Bailly offers up aromas of dark berries complemented by accents of iris, lilac, rose petals, graphite and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, dense and concentrated, dense, it's layered and textural, with a deep core of fruit, powdery tannins and a penetrating, saline finish. Vinified along traditional lines, it is a structured wine that will take some time to hit its stride, but at this early stage it appears suppler and more seamless than its 2020 and 2019 predecessors. A blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc from grapes picked from September 7 to 27, it's maturing half in new barriques and half in one- or two-year-old barrels.

Incredible complexity of aromas here with ripe currants and blackberries, but also dried flowers like violets and roses. Then there’s forest flower character such as bark, mushroom and sandalwood. Black truffles. Full-bodied with tight and chewy tannins that are polished and pure, with a solid and tight finish. It builds on your palate and frames the wine beautifully. 56% cabernet sauvignon, 37% merlot, 5% petit verdot and 2% cabernet franc.

The 2022 Haut-Bailly was picked between 7 and 27 September and underwent a four-week cuvaison, taking longer to consume the sugar and was matured in 50% new oak. It has a bouquet that compels you just to sit and contemplate. It gradually unfolds with blackberry, raspberry, potpourri and iris flower scents, well-defined, not showy but suave. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins. Minerals, black pepper and clove off a gentle grip with an impressive crescendo. It will need a decade in bottle. This Haut-Bailly has a haunting beauty, the kind of wine that will bring people to tears!

The wines have always been good, but have increased even more in quality in recent years. Haut-Bailly is known for its softness and silky texture. The vineyard is managed according to strict traditions and chemical herbicides are never used. Spraying is carefully limited, the soil is plowed and weeded with hoes, and the grapes are picked entirely by hand. The vinification takes place in a fermentation chamber with 26 thermo-regulated cement tanks of different sizes (ranging from 30 to 120 hectoliters). These specially adapted barrels ensure that the grapes, grown in different parts of the vineyard, are kept completely separate from the moment they are picked until the vinification.
The winemaking process takes place in cement tanks, while blending is done in stainless steel tanks - a great example of how tradition and modernity go hand in hand at Château Haut-Bailly. Alcoholic fermentation lasts eight to ten days and is followed by maceration. This process takes about three weeks during which the wine never overheats. In this way, a perfectly balanced wine is achieved.
