Description

The Kellerei Cantina Terla (Terlana) Pinot Grigio is a 100% Pinot Grigio (Pinot Gris) wine from the Alto Adige region. The grapes are harvested and selected by hand; the juice is gently pressed and clarified; the wine undergoes slow fermentation at a controlled temperature in stainless steel tanks, and is aged on the lees in stainless steel tanks for 5-7 months.
The Terlan Pinot Grigio has an intense straw-yellow aroma. The nose reveals fruity notes of pear, lychee, and white melon—with the floral aromatic character of a freshly mown meadow. On the palate, the wine is balanced with aromas ranging from black tea to exotic fruity nuances of melon and ripe grapefruit—an exceptionally full-bodied yet smooth wine. Ideal with appetizers such as smoked bacon, aged meats like Bündnerfleisch or venison sausage, and their typical Italian counterparts like Parma ham, dried tomato, and olive pâté; herb risotto, nettle gnocchi or beetroot dumplings, veal, and delicately grilled fish.

The 2022 Alto Adige Terlano Sauvignon Winkl is made mostly in stainless steel, with just 20% that passes though large wooden barrels. It boasts white flower, lemon sorbet, mineral quartz and a glacier quality. With time, you get sweeter tones of white peach, nectarine and edelweiss. This is spring in a glass. Winkl is well put together with no loose edges, and there is a hint of kerosene that appears just for a second on the finish.

A fresh and fresh sauvignon with sliced limes, gunpowder and pumice on both the nose and palate. Medium body. Medium fruity and a delicious finish.

The 2022 Sauvignon Winkl is pungent, with an intense burst of grapefruit zest and wild herbs forming its bouquet. Luxuriously round and soothing, this displays ripe orchard fruits and candied citrus tones across a wave of weighty textures. The 2022 finishes shorter than anticipated yet full of tension, with a mineral tinge that lingers on.

Cantina Terlano is, without a doubt, an icon for northern Italian wine. The portfolio is encyclopedic, with a vast number of varietal wines made in a fresh and easy-to-understand style and, more importantly, single vineyard wines and Terlaner DOC. The winery also produces the Cantina Andriano portfolio. One would think that such a large array of wines might diminish the overall quality produced at Terlano, but that is not the case. While Terlano is a co-op winery, with 43 growers working a total area of 190 hectares, the level of quality produced often outpaces many of the best small artisan growers throughout the region. Year after year, the Terlaner I Primo Grande Cuvée, Sauvignon Blanc Quarz, Pinot Bianco Riserva Vorberg and Terlaner Riserva Cuvée Nova Domus are immediate standouts. While prices have escalated over the years, in my opinion, they continue to represent tremendous value. In fact, it’s not uncommon for a visit to Terlano to include a blind serving of Premier Cru White Burgundy simply to set the pace for the wines they are about to pour. As for the recent vintages, the 2021s show the clarity and promise of the year. They are ripe yet chiseled with tantalizing acidity. As for the fresh 2022s, they show more of the richness of the vintage. Even still, the 2022 Sauvignon Blanc Quarz is an immediate standout and outlier, showing the intensity and balanced acidity to excel through medium-term cellaring.
