Description
The 2023 Kreuth Chardonnay from Cantina Terlano is a refined white wine from the Alto Adige region in Northern Italy. This wine is produced entirely from Chardonnay grapes and is known for its balanced acidity, creamy structure and elegant aromatic notes. The vineyards have a south to southwest orientation at altitudes between 260 and 350 meters above sea level, with slopes ranging from 5% to 30%. On a light, sandy-loamy soil with a high quartz content, coming from volcanic quartz-porphyry rock. The harvest is manual harvest and selection of the grapes. Soft pressing and natural sedimentation for clarification of the must. Slow fermentation at controlled temperatures followed by a 10-month maturation on the fine lees, partly in stainless steel tanks (50%) and partly in large wooden barrels (50%), with partial malolactic fermentation.
Colour: Bright straw yellow.
Nose : Aromas of exotic fruits such as passion fruit, carambola and citrus fruits, complemented by spicy mineral notes of flint.
Taste: Smooth and firm in structure with spicy, mineral and juicy aromas that give the wine a distinct terroir character.
This Chardonnay is an excellent companion for dishes such as vitello tonnato, marinated octopus, mixed antipasti, grilled vegetables, cheese balls and pasta aglio olio peperoncino. It also combines well with grilled fish with fennel, gratinated crepes with radicchio filling and fresh Tomino cheese.

The Cantina Terlano 2021 Alto Adige Terlano Chardonnay Kreuth (with 70,000 bottles made) plays its best cards in terms of texture. The bouquet is varietally pure with lemon curd, soft almond and creamy mango. The aromas are all integrated and put together like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. There are hints of light spice and toasted nut on the close.

The 2022 Chardonnay Kreuth is more savory than sweet, as notes of dried flowers, almonds, raw dough and scant ginger form its bouquet. This opens with a pretty inner sweetness and soft textures that usher in ripe pit fruits and sweet spice. It finishes long yet fresh, leaving a gentle saline tension and the mouth watering for more.

Cantina Terlano is, without a doubt, an icon for northern Italian wine. The portfolio is encyclopedic, with a vast number of varietal wines made in a fresh and easy-to-understand style and, more importantly, single vineyard wines and Terlaner DOC. The winery also produces the Cantina Andriano portfolio. One would think that such a large array of wines might diminish the overall quality produced at Terlano, but that is not the case. While Terlano is a co-op winery, with 43 growers working a total area of 190 hectares, the level of quality produced often outpaces many of the best small artisan growers throughout the region. Year after year, the Terlaner I Primo Grande Cuvée, Sauvignon Blanc Quarz, Pinot Bianco Riserva Vorberg and Terlaner Riserva Cuvée Nova Domus are immediate standouts. While prices have escalated over the years, in my opinion, they continue to represent tremendous value. In fact, it’s not uncommon for a visit to Terlano to include a blind serving of Premier Cru White Burgundy simply to set the pace for the wines they are about to pour. As for the recent vintages, the 2021s show the clarity and promise of the year. They are ripe yet chiseled with tantalizing acidity. As for the fresh 2022s, they show more of the richness of the vintage. Even still, the 2022 Sauvignon Blanc Quarz is an immediate standout and outlier, showing the intensity and balanced acidity to excel through medium-term cellaring.
