In the medieval village of Laguardia, the future of La Rioja has developed in the cellars of Artadi. Without a doubt, this masterpiece is due to the brilliant and creative work of Juan Carlos López, assisted today by his son Carlos.
When Juan Carlos turned the cooperative into an independent 'bodega' in 1992, he had already been in charge of it for 7 years. His vision was revolutionary and destroyed the whole of Rioja, but in no time he managed to make the best wines of Spain, which immediately conquered the entire world. Short pruning in the vineyards, resulting in very small yields, and the use of French oak barrels were just some of his innovative ideas. Even more important was the 'early' bottling of his wines, in contrast to the traditional Riojas, which were sometimes stored for up to 10 years in large wooden 'foudres'. With this he also consciously stepped aside from the Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva classification.
All wines in their range are made exclusively from the Tempranillo grape, which was born in Rioja and can also provide the best quality here. The range covers 3 wines in which Viñas de Gain is their base wine. This wine is the great example of the best Rioja wines and is often used as a reference point. Without a doubt the best quality wine for its price!!
Only the best grapes from the old vineyards are selected for Pagos Viejos, which come from the best terroirs throughout Rioja. Consequently, it is no wonder that this wine is a true explosion of fruit, structure and elegant tannins. This wine owes its perfect balance to 14 months of oak barrel aging. Only in the very best years is this selection made into superior Grandes Añadas.
Viña el Pison comes from a unique piece of land of 2.4 hectares where the subsoil and the location of the vineyard to the sun are exceptional tenors. With an average age of 65 years, the vines produce nothing but the very best, but unfortunately also very limited, which makes this stunner so unique!
The 2018 El Pison from Artadi is a worthy successor to the 2014, 2016 and 2017. The Viña El Pisón is the most aromatic of all single-vineyard bottlings from Artadi. It opens with aromas of violets and Asian herbs similar to a Rioja version of a Chambolle-Musigny or Vosne-Romanée. The nose is very spicy, ripe and intoxicating with open and expressive aromas of croissants, herbal tea, aromatic herbs and balsamic vinegar that is already remarkably complex for its young age, so that promises something with age. The El Pisón is very complete and is a very complex wine. Only 6600 bottles were produced and the wine received 99/100 points from Parker and according to Parker this 2018 Viña El Pisón is one of the best vintages ever for this bottling. It is named after a 2.4 hectare plot planted in 1945 in the village of Laguardia. The vineyard is an amphitheater with varying soils of limestone, clay and sandstone with a deep combination of limestone and silt. The grapes underwent a 24 to 48 hour cold soak and fermentation with native yeasts in oak barrels for 10-12 days, during which time the grapes were trampled twice a day. It matured for nine months in French oak barrels. There is something mysterious about this Pisón; it is subtle and elegant, a bit austere and reserved at first. The palate is seamless, silky with very refined tannins, with stunning balance and a very long, clean and precise finish. This is super. In June 2020, 6,600 bottles were filled.

Tasting a new vintage of El Pisón is always a special moment, and when it comes from a vintage with high expectations, even more. The 2024 Viña El Pisón comes from a vintage that allowed them to obtain grapes with good concentration, balance and aromatic expression, giving rise to wines with freshness, tannic fineness and good aging potential. This comes from the iconic 2.4 hectares panted in Laguardia in 1945 in an amphitheater on poor limestone soils on sandstone with silt and calcium carbonate. The vinification was in open wooden tanks with cold maceration for 24 to 48 hours and fermentation for 10 to 12 days with daily treading and a small pumping over, followed by malolactic and aging in demi-muids of 600 liters and the second winter in foudre. It was already in stainless steel when I tasted it, the final blend to be bottled in a couple of months. This could be a little more serious than El Carretil from 2024, but both are at a very high level of quality, pretty similar. In fact, the wine that showed better today was the 2024 El Carretil.
Artadi still sells their wines without the Rioja appellation of origin, but they are still located in the heart of Rioja. So, their wines appear in this article like always, because I include wines from the region whether or not they carry the appellation of origin on their labels. They keep working their 56 hectares of vineyards in the villages of Laguardia and El Villar to produce between 100,000 and 120,000 bottles. Their cellar has changed when it comes to the containers where they age their wines, as they no longer have any 225-liter barrels and instead have 120 600-liter demi-muids, 30 500-liter demi-muids and four oak vats ranging between 3,000 and 5,000 liters. Everything has been certified organic since 2016, even though they started working organically in 2007.
I tasted with Carlos López de Lacalle, second generation in the winery. Carlos has started to change the style of the wines in 2023 and 2024, harvesting earlier, using larger-volume containers and giving the wines a longer élevage for the micro-oxygenation part but not for the aromas or flavors. The aim is to obtain fine-boned wines with freshness, and he finds that in the wines from 2024. We tasted the bottled 2023s and unbottled samples of the 2024s, except for the 2024 white, which was already in bottle. 2023 was warm, and 2024 was cooler and with a lot of rain in September. La Hoya and El Carretil could be the highlights from the 2023s. He likes 2024 very much, which he calls a textbook vintage. Like last time, we tasted by village: La Hoya, Quintanilla and La Poza de Ballesteros are in Elvillar, a village where the wines show more fruit, and darker fruit too; and Valdeginés, San Lázaro, El Carretil and El Pisón are in Laguardia, a village with finer-boned and mineral, profound wines. The wines from Laguardia tend to have more elegance, while Elvillar has more ripeness.
Alcohol levels are going down. The 2024s are around 14%, and in 2025, some wines have only 12.8% alcohol, though the majority are between 13% and 13.5%. But that was because of the 2025 vintage, which was a rainy year with lots of mildew and hail on the 11th of July, and for unknown reasons, the grapes stopped in September. But more about that next year...

Spices, minerals, deep plums and berries. Full-bodied, showing silty yet quite tightly wound tannins with rich, ripe fruit and a persistent finish. From organically grown grapes. 95% tempranillo and 5% viura. Drinkable now but better after 2026. About 5,000 bottles produced.

From: 2022, 2023 and 2024: The Rioja Renaissance (Apr 2026)
The most compelling wine in the range, the 2023 El Pisón layers complexity with blackberry, herbs, oak, flowers, pennyroyal and a hint of blood orange. With finely chalky tannins and a contained yet generous flow, it builds depth of flavor while remaining intense yet delicate. Graceful and weightless, it still retains volume and energy. A complete expression.
