The Riva Ranch Single Vineyard Chardonnay is a beautifully rich, yet balanced California-style Chardonnay, representing what the Arroyo Seco appellation has to offer. This wine is made from Chardonnay grapes, complemented by a touch of Gewürztraminer. To complement the rich fruity flavors, approximately 90% of this wine ferments in barrels. The remaining portion ferments in stainless steel. In addition to the classic Chardonnay flavors of apple and pear, Arroyo fruit consistently offers aromas and flavors of tropical and stone fruits. This Chardonnay has the perfect balance between tropical fruit, freshness and the creamy notes that come from the aging process. The wine has a rich and full mouthfeel with a balanced long finish. Delicious to pair with white fish, shellfish, mushrooms and chicken.

ABOUT WENTE VINEYARDS

Wente Vineyards is the oldest family-owned winery in the country. The wines are 100% sustainably grown and farmed in the Livermore Valley, San Francisco Bay and Arroyo Seco, Monterey appellations. The winery is owned and operated by the fourth and fifth generations of the Wente family, the family known for their influence on the making of California Chardonnay.

ABOUT ARROYO SECO

Although Arroyo Seco was officially recognized as a wine designation in 1983, it was a well-kept secret in Monterey County until recently. The northern Santa Lucia Highlands, relatively speaking, was only established in 1991, but it is still widely known. Yet Arroyo Seco fruit, once an anonymous component of Monterey County wine blends, is now a prized label designation in its own right.

Monterey Bay and Salinas Valley are the defining influences on the region. The cold Pacific air, which flows south from Monterey Bay through Salinas Valley, is both a blessing and a curse. Without this air conditioner, Arroyo Seco would be too warm for Burgundian varieties, yet the vineyards are able to produce consistently bright, red-fruited Pinot Noir and well-balanced Chardonnay. On the other hand, growing conditions are challenging. When the colder Pacific air collides with warmer air from the south, the clash often produces afternoon gales and hail.

Wente Vineyards - from Napa to Livermore Valley

The Wente Vineyards winery in California's Livermore Valley vineyards was founded in 1883. Today, Wente Vineyards is the "oldest family-owned winery still in operation in the United States." It all started in 1883 when Carl Wente started growing grapes on 47 hectares. At that time, he had already learned the winemaking trade from Charles Krug in Napa Valley and was able to get to work with the excellent soil in Livermore Valley.

1935 – California's first grape variety label

In 1935, Carl's sons—Ernest and Herman—introduced the first wine label in California to designate a grape variety — in this case, Sauvignon Blanc. The Wentes' efforts, including the groundbreaking night harvest, have helped make Livermore Valley one of California's premier wine regions.

The Wente clone. It doesn't get more individual than this

The Wente clone is a particularly heat-resistant rootstock that is used in many California vineyards to grow Chardonnay. In 1912, Ernest Wente took cuttings from the University of Montpellier in France to the U.S., and from there they spread not only to Wente but also to a number of other wineries in California, before finally being officially certified by the University of California's Foundation Plant Materials Service.

The Wente vines in all their variety

The grapes grown at Wente in California are, of course, the American classics

  • Chardonnay
  • Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Zinfandel
  • Pinot Noir
  • Merlot

But in addition, you will also find Wente's classic German white wine, Riesling, grown in the coolest locations. Today, the winery is run by Jordan and Niki Wente. The two sisters are still supported by their father with words and deeds, but they have the last word.
