Weinhof Waldschütz is a progressive family business from Kamptal, led by Markus Waldschütz. He is internationally regarded as one of the most interesting Austrian winemakers of the moment. His experience at leading wineries and his training with Jim Clendenen of Au Bon Climat form the basis of his approach. The philosophy is clear: quality originates in the vineyard, not in the cellar. Origin and terroir

The Weissburgunder Grosse Reserve comes from Kamptal, a region known for its combination of freshness and ripeness. The Stangl and Hasel vineyards are situated on loess soils, a coarse clay that provides structure and a slightly spicy character. The climate is continental, with influences from the River Kamp. Warm days ensure ripe fruit, while cool nights preserve the acidity. This balance gives the wine tension and a clear terroir expression.

Grapes and vineyard management

This wine is made from 100% Weissburgunder, also known as Pinot Blanc. The grapes are harvested by hand around mid-October, at the moment they have reached optimal ripeness. Strict selection and low yields result in a high concentration in the grapes. The focus is on healthy vineyards and a natural balance, with minimal intervention. This ensures pure aromas and a clear expression of the grape and the terroir.

Vinification and aging

Fermentation takes place at controlled temperatures between 17 and 19 degrees. Subsequently, the wine ages for no less than 36 months on the fine lees in 500-liter oak barrels. This long sur lie aging gives the wine structure, complexity, and a creamy texture. The use of larger barrels ensures that the wood influence remains subtle and the freshness is preserved. The combination of aging and precision in the cellar results in a wine with depth and length.

Color, smell and taste

The wine has a bright, golden-yellow color. On the nose, aromas of yellow apple, dried orange peel, and a light spiciness with white pepper come to the fore. On the palate, the wine is full and round, with a beautiful balance between ripe fruit and fresh acidity. The long aging provides extra complexity and a creamy structure. The finish is long, soft, and slightly spicy, with a fresh core that keeps the wine lively.

Style and character

This Grosse Reserve is a powerful and structured white wine with a clear focus on balance and length. The wine combines ripeness with freshness and has a full mouthfeel without becoming heavy. With an alcohol percentage of 13.5 percent and good acidity, the wine remains balanced. This is a wine that develops well in the bottle and has an aging potential of approximately 15 years.

Volume

The conditions in Kamptal ensured an even ripening of the grapes. The combination of warm days and cool nights gave the wine both aromatic intensity and fresh acidity. The relatively late harvest in October allowed the grapes to develop fully. This translates into a wine with concentration, structure, and a beautiful balance between ripeness and tension.

Food and wine pairings

This Weissburgunder is versatile at the table. It pairs well with veal, roasted pork, and barbecue dishes. The combination of structure and freshness also makes it suitable for rich dishes with creamy sauces. Additionally, it is a fine choice with poultry or hearty fish dishes. Serve at around 8 degrees for the best balance between aroma and freshness.
