Description
The El Bosque vineyard is located in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, La Rioja. It is a very small vineyard of less than 1.5 hectares (1.4820 ha - 3.66 acres) at an altitude of 500 meters. The soil is calcareous clay with an abundance of gravel and small round stones on the surface. Year of planting: 1973. Environmentally integrated farming practices, practicing environmentally-friendly viticulture that follows the plant's biorhythms. Organic fertilization is applied every two years.
The grapes are naturally hand-picked and not mechanically destemmed. Instead, each grape is hand-selected and hand-destemmed. Cold pre-fermentation maceration at 8°C for 5 days. Fermentation in French oak barrels at 28°C with indigenous yeast selected from our own vineyards. Skin maceration lasts a full 23 days. The wine matures peacefully for 18 months in new French (95%) and Central European (5%) Bordeaux oak barrels.
This technically perfect wine from the beautiful Sierra Cantabria winery, owned by the Eguren family, is beautifully structured and offers a perfect balance of power and elegance. It has a fresh, fruity attack with medium-to-full black fruit notes, such as blackberries, complemented by beautiful, yet not overpowering, oak. Its full-bodied flavor is juicy with firm tannins and perfectly integrated acidity. The beauty of Sierra Cantabria El Bosque lies in its incredible freshness. The wine is complex, fresh, and simultaneously young, as if tasting fresh, young Tempranillo grapes. A kind of bodybuilder under a silk robe.

The 2022 El Bosque has more toasted notes than its siblings and hints of sweet spices and ripe black fruit. They have done soil studies of this vineyard, and the soil is very balanced, with good topsoil with organic matter, some sand, some red clay and gravel and the compact limestone at the bottom that provides the elegance. The wine is medium to full-bodied with grip from the 2022 tannins. Despite everything, it shows some lightness, especially in the mid-palate. 8,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2024 after 18 months in new French oak barrels.
Sierra Cantabria has two separate ranges, Sierra Cantabria and what they call Viñedos Sierra Cantabria. It's a project from the Eguren family from San Vicente de la Sonsierra.

The 2022 Finca El Bosque is a Tempranillo from gravel soils in San Vicente de la Sonsierra. This aged for 18 months in new French oak. A rich purple in hue, it delivers sour cherry, plum, blackberry and subtle oak notes against a background of wild herbs. Dry and flavorful, the palate is broad and polished, with fine tannins and a plush, slightly unctuous texture. A lengthy, fruit-driven finish and modern edge round out this well-balanced Rioja.

This year, I visited the leading vineyards of San Vicente de la Sonsierra with Marcos Eguren, Sierra Cantabria’s oenologist and technical director. Gruff in manner, Eguren spoke with clear reverence and affection for sites like Mágico and La Veguilla, both of which yield parcel wines. His approach blends well-developed ripeness with extremely gentle extraction, resulting in a style with body and volume that never feels heavy or overly concentrated. Oak plays a prominent role but is handled with finesse, used to round out the wines rather than define them. Among the mid-size to large producers in the area, this is one that remains firmly grounded, likely because it’s still run by the sixth generation of the Eguren family. Also of note, their Toro wines, produced at Teso La Monja, are among the region’s most accomplished.

The Spanish winery Sierra Cantabria was founded in 1957 by Guillermo Eguren and is one of Hermanos Eguren's beautiful wineries. Sierra Cantabria is located in the Rioja in a unique location between the River Ebro and the Sierra Cantabria mountain range. The Sierra Cantabria Mountains (1200m.) And the River Ebro (350m.) Provide a special microclimate with Mediterranean and continental features - mild winters and mild summers, unique to wine growing.
On the other hand, the thermal summer jump (intense heat during the day with fresh night temperatures) increases the polyphenol content, which makes for excellent quality wines with a distinctive character.
The vineyards of Bodega Sierra Cantabria are mainly located in the towns of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Labastida and Laguardia, an area very well known for wine growing.
The Tempranillo variety predominates, along with small amounts of Garnacha, Viura and 'Hairy Tempranillo', all of which are grown in vineyards about 35 years old, although there are also plots up to 70 years old.The harvest is carried out by hand every year, paying special attention to the rigorous selection of the grapes that are the soul of the wine, in optimal condition and in perfect ripening conditions. The careful harvest is followed by a thorough separation of the bunches, which is done on a selection table at the entrance of the winery. This year, I visited the leading vineyards of San Vicente de la Sonsierra with Marcos Eguren, Sierra Cantabria’s oenologist and technical director. Gruff in manner, Eguren spoke with clear reverence and affection for sites like Mágico and La Veguilla, both of which yield parcel wines. His approach blends well-developed ripeness with extremely gentle extraction, resulting in a style with body and volume that never feels heavy or overly concentrated. Oak plays a prominent role but is handled with finesse, used to round out the wines rather than define them. Among the mid-size to large producers in the area, this is one that remains firmly grounded, likely because it’s still run by the sixth generation of the Eguren family. Also of note, their Toro wines, produced at Teso La Monja, are among the region’s most accomplished.

The Spanish winery Sierra Cantabria was founded in 1957 by Guillermo Eguren and is one of Hermanos Eguren's beautiful wineries. Sierra Cantabria is located in the Rioja in a unique location between the River Ebro and the Sierra Cantabria mountain range. The Sierra Cantabria Mountains (1200m.) And the River Ebro (350m.) Provide a special microclimate with Mediterranean and continental features - mild winters and mild summers, unique to wine growing.
On the other hand, the thermal summer jump (intense heat during the day with fresh night temperatures) increases the polyphenol content, which makes for excellent quality wines with a distinctive character.
The vineyards of Bodega Sierra Cantabria are mainly located in the towns of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Labastida and Laguardia, an area very well known for wine growing.
The Tempranillo variety predominates, along with small amounts of Garnacha, Viura and 'Hairy Tempranillo', all of which are grown in vineyards about 35 years old, although there are also plots up to 70 years old.The harvest is carried out by hand every year, paying special attention to the rigorous selection of the grapes that are the soul of the wine, in optimal condition and in perfect ripening conditions. The careful harvest is followed by a thorough separation of the bunches, which is done on a selection table at the entrance of the winery. De 2023 Sierra Cantabria Finca el Bosque is een prachtige wijn die zich onderscheidt door zijn frisse fruitigheid en elegante stevigheid.
