In 1981, Mas Martinet was born, a lifelong project and a dream come true. The brand is the result of the passion of Josep Lluís Pérez and Montse Ovejero and is now owned by the entire family: Josep Lluís, Montse, Sara, Núria, Adrià, Marc, Jordi, Armando, and Pilar. The unique wines of Mas Martinet in Priorat have enormous aging potential. For over 25 years, Martinet has reigned at the top of the Priorat appellation. In recent years, father Pérez has retired from Mas Martinet, and the wines are now vinified by Sara Pérez (see also Venus, Dido, and Gratallops ). Sara is also the wife of another icon, René Barbier Jr., known for Clos Mogador , and René and Sara also make wines under their own names, Sara Pérez y René Barbier. Naturally, we also carry these wines.
Clos Martinet comes from the plots of the Mas d'en Martinet estate, located in the wine region of the town of Gratallops. The slate-rich land and the varying exposures of the vineyards give this wine the typical character of an estate each year. Mas Martinet is one of the pioneers of the new Priorat, the Pérez family's project. Since 2017, they no longer use a sorting table or a cypress, but all their fermentations are with the grapes' yeasts; and they stopped chilling the grapes 15 years ago. From 2006 to 2016, they increased the number of full bunches in their fermentations, which are now 100% full bunches for all wines except the Martinet Bru.
They have 25 hectares of vineyards across five different locations, cultivated organically and biodynamically using permaculture and regenerative agriculture. The Martinet Bru comes partly from an estate called Mas Seró, located in the Masos de Falset region of the Serra Alta, at an altitude of 400 meters and facing southwest, and another estate in Torroja, which is colder and deeper. It is a blend of Garnatxa Negra, Carinyena, Sirà, and a small amount of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, naturally made organically/biodynamically without chemicals.
The Cami Pesseroles is named after the vineyard where the Garnacha and Carinena grapes originate, a parcel that was planted together in 1939. The Cami Pesseroles is the old path that surrounds the three small vineyards, home to 95-year-old vines, located between Porrera and Gratallops. Two grape varieties, Carinena (60%) and Garnacha (40%), form the basis here on a very poor, rocky soil. Very limited production, just two hectares with a naturally low yield due to the age of the vines combined with the soil structure, results in enormous concentration in the glass. The whole bunches were trodden underfoot and then fermented in two open-topped 500-liter chestnut barrels with indigenous yeasts for almost three weeks. The wine was pressed and aged in 650-liter chestnut, acacia, cherry, and oak barrels. The wine has only 13.5% alcohol and a very elegant and fresh style. It is precise, aromatic, and open. This is surprisingly elegant for Cariñena, a grape that almost always has a rustic touch. Only around 2,000 bottles of Cami Pesseroles are ever produced. Pure minerality and rusticity with a tribute to the Priorat. A beautiful bouquet of raspberry, blackcurrant, rosemary, cocoa, soft hints of vanilla, and a pleasant smoky undertone. Silky smooth attack to an incredibly long mineral finish. Clearly a wine with great aging potential, but also a very impressive experience in its youth.

The 2023 Camí Pesseroles is mostly Cariñena with some Garnacha (depending on the yields from Garnacha) from head-pruned old vines planted in 1939, harvested together and co-fermented (which changes in 2024). The grapes were foot trodden and fermented in an open-top oak vat, and since 2017, the wine has matured in a chestnut foudre. It has a serious and harmonious nose and 14% alcohol, reflecting the climate. It is concentrated and has some earthiness. It feels more classical. This is a sulfured cuvée, with sulfur added at bottling time, as Cariñena and slate are more difficult to do without added sulfites.

From: From Revolution to Evolution: The Garnatxas and Cariñenas of Priorat & Montsant (Nov 2024)
The 2021 Camí Pesseroles captures the resilient spirit of Garnatxa and Cariñena from the sunny slate hills of Priorat. Fermented in chestnut wood and oak foudres, the 2021 delivers aromas of pomegranate, sour cherry and herbs, along with notes of undergrowth and distinct woody elements. Dry, austere and grippy on the palate, it has a unique, talc-like mouthfeel that leads to a lean, mineral-driven finish.
- By Joaquín Hidalgo on November 2024
Josep Lluis Pérez is one of the oenologists who changed the history of Priorat with his technical expertise and his nose for a unique style. Trained as a biologist, Pérez founded Más Martinet in the early 1990s and a school of oenology soon thereafter. It’s widely held that everyone who makes wine in the region today has come under his influence at some point, including his daughter, Sara Pérez, who has taken over oenology duties at the winery. A woman with a strong character and her own ideas, Sara Pérez has set Mas Martinet on a clear path as to which varieties and soils are best for their wines, also instilling a firm set of principles. Vineyards such as Pesseroles (planted in 1939 in the foothills) and Els Esurçons (which climbs up the hills along pure slate terraces), yield strong examples of the house’s talents. Working in an increasingly radical style, today, Mas Martinet uses barely any sulfites, produces Brisat (orange) wines and crafts less concentrated Garnatxas than those seen in the past. The resulting wines bear vibrant, energetic, modern profiles, as seen in Clos Martinet, Camí de Pesseroles and Els Escurçons.

At Mas Martinet, all chemicals in the vineyards have been banned. Sara and her team at Martinet are always looking for new perspectives, with a culture based on balance, sustainability and harmony with nature. Deeply committed to tradition, to the environment and to people. They recover some varieties and reinvent some processes and materials according to the principles of agroecology and minimal intervention with maximum respect for the people who work on it. They process the crops in an environmentally friendly manner, treating the processes as respectfully as possible. Examples include growing legumes and wild species of flowers and shrubs in order to provide food for the entire chain. they base us on the lunar calendar to optimize (bio-dynamic) the natural treatments we use in the vineyard, such as compost and herbal infusions.
Clos Martinet comes from the plots of the Mas d'en Martinet estate, located in the wine region of the town of Gratallops. The land, which contains slate, and the different exposures of the vineyard each year give this wine the typical character of an estate. Garnatxa Negra, Cariñnyena, Garnatxa Peluda and Sirà, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
The wine press is unanimous in its praise for the wines of this iconic house. Wines getting points close to the maximum limit of 100 points is standard rather than exceptional. Supply from the relatively small stamp vineyards is very limited and the storage potential of the wines is unprecedentedly long.
