Bodegas MORCA is part of Juan Gil Family. Bodegas Morca is located in the village of Borja, in the province of Zaragoza and belongs to the Campo de Borja appellation - the region famous for the red, robust Garnacha. Garnacha grapes from small plots with low yields are hand-picked and fermented separately in small barrels and then transferred to French oak barrels where the FLOR DE MORCA GARNACHA stays for 6 months to transform into a fruity, full-bodied, very attractive wine
The Flor de Morca is the new name and was previously known as Flor de Goda is almost opaque in the glass with purple hues as befits a full bodied Garnacha. The wine shows richness and finesse with layers of blackberries, blueberries and plums, mineral, mocha and herbs bordered with dark chocolate, liquorice and crushed pepper. The Flor de Morca is the little brother of the Morca and is a delicious fruity, full bodied wine that is a perfect accompaniment to Rice, pasta, (noodles, spaghetti, macaroni), vegetables, mushrooms, stew, sausage, pork, roast meat, grilled meat and also delicious with a spicy (blue-veined) cheese. We advise this wine (and as with many warm-blooded wines) to drink slightly chilled - Delicious!!! (14-16 degrees).

The 2017 Morca is an extremely dark, almost opaque, ripe and oaky Garnacha from head-pruned vines in the villages of Borja and Tabuenca. It fermented in open-top stainless steel tanks with neutral yeasts followed by malolactic and 22 months in French oak barrels. This is super ripe and heady, in the style of a mini-Amarone, with black fruit in liqueur and tons of balsamic notes from the élevage. It's hard to see the underbrush and the Mediterranean herbs that are there in the background. The palate is really powerful, aggressive; it feels too young and alcoholic. Tasting against the 2015, it feels like this needs at least another couple of years in bottle to become a little more civilized. But tasting these wines is hard, it's declinations of the same excess ripeness and oak in different degrees. 11,273 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2019.
Morca is the name of the winery in Campo de Borja from the Jumilla-based Gil Family Estates and vintner Jordi Flos. I had only tasted a couple of wines from the first vintage (2014), and they now have a whole range, of which they showed me up to three different vintages so I could get up to date. Here, they own 77 hectares of vines, and in 2017 they produced 80,500 bottles, but the project is designed to reach 200,000 bottles. The wines are even more powerful than the ones from Calatayud, perhaps a little more rustic, and they are also produced with Garnacha. I found the wines too ripe and alcoholic, and I had to leave the top ones in the glass to see if they developed any nuances, but that only seemed to increase the sensation of warmth and oak. Certainly not my cup of tea.
