Description
Bodegas Ateca is owned by the Gil family, who are world famous for their El Nido and Clio wines, but also have very small, beautiful domains where the best of the region is brought forward on a very small scale. All these wines are each and every one gems. With Ateca, Shaya and Can Blau they have great wineries in various regions where only indigenous grapes are used.
In 2005, Bodega Ateca, 55 hectares in size, was founded in the village of the same name. The bodega is located in the province of Zaragoza, fourteen kilometers from Calatayud De Armas is the top model of Bodega Ateca and grapes come from very old vines of Garnacha which are planted on the hills at about 1000 meters above sea level and come from the best plots. There are always only a limited number of bottles of De Armas available. There are different types of soil in the entire region, but the Grenache vineyard mainly consists of poor lime/clay soil with slate. The clay is deep and ensures that the vines can root very deeply and absorb moisture, so even if there is very little rain in the region, these vines can always get moisture (after hard work). The slate provides the unique minerality in this wine. The grapes for De Armas are picked manually with the 1st selection in the vineyard and 2nd selection in the bodega. Only the best fruit makes it into the topper. After the fermentation process, the wine stays in barriques for 18 months and then the wine gets almost a year of bottle maturation before it is released on the market.
The Armas Old Vines is full bodied and aromatic, but with a surprising freshness which comes from the great differences between day and night at this altitude and this gives acidity and balance. In the nose we smell dark cherry and blackberry. The fruit is ripe but there are spicy and spicy aromas (pepper and nutmeg), as well as the mineral memories of the slate soils of the vineyard. In the mouth it is tasty, fruity and elegant and full bodied. Very good to drink now and shows its great potential to improve with time.

There are notes of coconut, vanilla and smoked bacon in the nose of the 2019 Atteca Armas, the old-vine cuvée from their best vineyards around the village of Ateca in Calatayud. It has a commercial profile with plenty of oak aromas from no less than 18 months in French oak barrels and a full-bodied palate with abundant tannins. 2019 was a healthy harvest after a warm and dry season. This is a powerful and generously oaked Garnacha that showcases the house style. It's ripe at 15.5% alcohol but balanced. 7,200 bottles were filled in April 2021.
Ateca is the winery in Calatayud from the Gil family from Jumilla. They have around 100 hectares of vineyards there, mostly on slate soils and some as high as 900 meters in altitude. The wines are powerful, ripe and generously oaked. They produce close to one million bottles.

Deep violet. Spice-accented blackberry, cherry-vanilla and incense aromas are complicated by hints of candied flowers and cracked pepper. Appealingly sweet and expansive on the palate, offering concentrated red and dark berry, mocha and cola flavors and a strong, spicy overtone. Shows impressive depth as well as energy, finishing with sneaky tannins and an echo of candied flowers and cherry preserves.
