Description
The winery's origins date back to the mid-19th century and were based on the Amoignon family's vineyards. During the First World War, the name Amoignon was replaced by Matrot, as the name had been adopted by marriage. Thierry and Pascale Matrot now run the estate, and their two daughters also work in the business. Domaine Matrot produces a wide range of Burgundy wines from the Côte de Beaune, including both white and red wines, ranging from basic to premier cru wines.
Blagny is a hamlet on the border between Meursault and Puligny. (Both white and red Meursault 1er crus are produced here.) The MEURSAULT-BLAGNY 1ER CRU is, of course, a 100% Chardonnay from the Meursault appellation and from the renowned Blagny Premier Cru vineyards. The grapes are harvested by hand using natural yeasts. The whole bunches are pressed and then left to rest for 24 hours, followed by settling and transferring to barrels. The wine ferments in temperature-controlled vats and undergoes complete malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged on its lees for 12 months in oak barrels between 1 and 4 years old, followed by a further 3 months of aging in steel tanks to prepare the wine for bottling. The Matrot Meursault-Blagny 1er Cru has a vibrant, fresh bouquet with citrus notes of yellow plums, mixed with flint and pure fruit. The aromas are characteristic of clay-limestone soils, particularly those of limestone rocks. The palate is well-defined and has good weight, with notes of flaked almonds, a hint of ginger, and some vanilla and brioche on the finish.

From: The Lord Giveth…Burgundy 2023 (Jan 2025)
The 2023 Meursault Blagny 1er Cru has a composed bouquet, cut from a similar cloth to the Chevalières, with fine mineralité and focus. The palate is slightly honeyed on the entry, very rich and generous, finishing with tropical notes of pineapple and tinned peaches toward a lightly spiced aftertaste. A sun-kissed Meursault-Blagny.

Elsa Matrot is not happy. Not only has she lost her mobile phone, but the road outside her Meursault winery is being ripped up to be re-cobbled, so that every ten seconds a truck blasts its horn. It’s a distraction, but fortunately, the wines are good enough to hold my attention.
“It was quite challenging because of the yields and heterogeneity among the reds,” she tells me as the klaxon sounds once again. “So, we had to do a lot of sorting. We decided to keep the best grapes, not the engorged and larger ones, so we sorted out 25-30% for some parcels. That meant we sometimes produced less than in 2022, and, in fact, we are 30% down on average. We started the picking on August 31 with the whites, followed by the reds, while normally some reds are picked simultaneously with the whites. Some Pinots were not ready for harvesting and the disparity between different parcels was high, which meant we picked over 17 days. This disparity depended on the permeability of the soils and the orientation. But we are quite happy with the result and the reds have good complexity. We cropped around 60 hl/ha for the whites, which didn’t make us afraid. It is more concerning for the reds.”
“The most challenging thing for us was keeping natural acidity as the temperature went up for five days, meaning we could only pick in the morning, even though we have thermoregulated tanks. When we smelled the [incoming] grapes, they were hot, and we preferred to start the fermentation directly. The reds had no punching down during 12 days in vat and the fermentation was quite long and complicated due to the residual sugar that had to be fermented before barreling down. The wines are matured in 20% new oak, whilst the whites were racked at the beginning of September. The alcohol levels are between 13.2% and 13.6%.”

Domaine Matrot is a prestigious wine producer located in the heart of the Burgundian wine region in France. The history of Domaine Matrot goes back several generations. It started at the end of the 19th century when Joseph Matrot founded the estate in Meursault, a renowned village for producing exceptional Chardonnay wines.
Over the years, the Matrot family has painstakingly cultivated and expanded their vineyards, acquiring prime plots of land in some of Burgundy's most prized appellations, including Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet and Volnay. This strategic acquisition of vineyards has enabled Domaine Matrot to produce a wide range of high-quality wines that showcase the unique terroir of each vineyard location. Domaine Matrot is known for its traditional winemaking techniques, prioritizing minimal intervention to allow the expression of the terroir and the characteristics of the grape varieties to shine through in the final wines. They typically ferment their wines using indigenous yeasts and age them in French oak barrels to add complexity and structure while respecting the delicate nuances of the fruit.
The estate has been passed down through several generations of the Matrot family, each contributing their expertise and passion for winemaking to uphold the domain's reputation for excellence. Today, Domaine Matrot is run by the current generation of the family, who continue to uphold the estate's traditions while embracing modern developments in viticulture and winemaking. Domaine Matrot consistently produces wines that reflect Burgundy's unique terroir and skill.
