Jean-Pierre Latour is a quiet man from Meursault, averse to prestige and reputation. He makes beautiful wines (powerful whites and refined reds) that enjoy international acclaim. Grapes have been grown at Domaine Latour-Giraud since 1680, and in Meursault since 1848. Around 1980, the decision was made to bottle the wine themselves and no longer supply merchants. It remains a trend for grape growers in Burgundy to start making their own wine. This is why merchants are increasingly buying up vineyards to maintain their position. The family business is now led by Jean-Pierre Latour, assisted by his sister Florence, among others. The estate comprises 10 hectares, 80% of which are white and 20% of which are red grapes. The Chardonnay vineyards are almost all located in Meursault, in the commune's appellation and are classified as premier cru. The blue grapes are grown primarily in premier cru vineyards in Pommard (Refène) and Volnay (Clos des Chênes). The company enjoys great international recognition.

origin, terroir and climate

The grapes come from plots in and around Meursault. The soils consist primarily of limestone and marl with pebbles. This creates tension and a tight, saline note. The climate is cool continental. Warm days produce ripe fruit. Cool nights preserve the freshness. This results in a Chardonnay with bright fruit, refined acidity, and an energetic structure.

the wine 2023 Domaine Latour-Giraud Bourgogne Chardonnay

The 2023 is the house's calling card. Accessible, precise, and recognizably Meursault-inspired. Think citrus, white peach, and a light nutty undertone. The wine immediately reveals pleasure, yet also offers substance and length. This is a Bourgogne Blanc with undeniable class for its level.

grapes, harvest, fermentation and maturation

100% Chardonnay. Hand-picked in small crates. Whole bunches are gently pressed in the cellar. Fermentation takes place partly in stainless steel for tension and freshness. Another portion is fermented and aged in French oak barrels, a limited number of which are new. Aging typically takes 10 to 12 months on fine lees. This imparts texture, nuance, and a subtle creaminess without overpowering the fruit.

color, smell and taste

Light straw yellow with green highlights. The nose reveals lemon, lime, and ripe apple. Then, white peach, almond, and a hint of brioche. The palate is taut and clean. The attack is fresh, the mid-palate juicy and precise. The limestone soil lends a clear, salty-mineral finish. The finish is long and invigorating, with a subtle spiciness from the barrel.

serving advice and storage potential

Serve at 10 to 12 degrees Celsius in a large white wine glass. Gently decanting young bottles helps open up the wine. Drink from now until 2028 for maximum freshness and excitement. A few years of bottle aging rounds out the texture and deepens the aromas.

recommended wine and food pairings

  • Sea bass with beurre blanc and chives. The fresh acidity and minerality keep the sauce light and balanced.
  • Salad with goat cheese, apple, and walnut. The citrus fruit and subtle saltiness complement the fresh, briny profile.
  • Risotto with asparagus and Parmesan. The creaminess is offset by the crisp, refreshing finish.
  • Veal oyster with mushroom jus. The subtle woody notes and almond flavors connect the meat and the jus.
  • Baked cod with lemon and dill. The wine enhances the clean, juicy character of the fish.
  • Cold-cut poultry with tarragon mayonnaise. The vibrant acidity cuts through the creamy texture and keeps everything fresh.

The history of Latour-Giraud spans three centuries and begins at the end of the 17th century. The oldest known ancestor is Jean Latour-Boillot, born around 1680. At that time, the vine was already the most important wage. The presence of the Latour family on the vineyard appears during the French Revolution through the person of Jean Latour-Mouquin, born in 1748 and grandson of Jean Latour-Boillot. The Giraud family settled in Côte d'Or for a long time, had founded a distillery in the hospital of Meursault around 1845. This distillery operated until 1914, producing Fine of Bourgogne, from the Marc of Bourgogne, as well as the famous Burgundy.

Today it is run by Jean-Pierre Latour who takes care of wine production, winemaking, breeding and marketing. He is assisted in his work by his sister Florence who deals with the administrative part. The vineyards of Latour-Giraud consist of 10 hectares. They only produce classified wines, including about 80% white wines and 20% red wines. The majority of the white vines are in five appellations of 1st Vintage of Meursault: Les Genevrières, Les Charmes, Les Perrières, Les Bouchères and Le Poruzot. With 2 hectares in Meursault Genevrières, Latour-Giraud is the main owner of this excellent first vintage. He also owns a piece of first crop in the northern border of Puligny Montrachet, with the climate of Champs-Canet.
