Description
Jean Pierre Latour is a quiet man from Meursault, who is averse to standing and reputations. He makes beautiful wines (powerful white and refined red) that enjoy great international prestige. Grapes have been grown at Domaine Latour-Giraud since 1680 and since 1848 this has been done in Meursault. Around 1980 the decision was made to bottle the wine themselves and no longer to supply to traders. It is still the trend for grape growers in Burgundy to make their own wine. This is the reason that the traders themselves are increasingly buying up vineyards in order to maintain their position. The family business is now led by Jean-Pierre Latour, who is assisted by his sister Florence, among others. The domain has 10 hectares, of which 80% for white and 20% for black grapes. The Chardonnay vineyards are almost all located in Meursault in the municipal appellation and premier cru. The red grapes are mainly grown in premier cru vineyards in Pommard (Refène), Volnay (Clos des Chênes). The company has great international recognition, such as up to 92 points from Robert Parker (2015 vintage - later not yet rated) for one of the white wines.
The Latour-Giraud Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières is for us one of the most beautiful Meursault wines. Yes, the wine is certainly full and powerful, but what makes this Meursault very beautiful is the beautiful minerality. In the glass, the wine is medium yellow. In the nose brioche, butter, nuts, honey, herbs and white and riper yellow fruit. In the mouth a round attack, good integration of the wood, creamy but elegant and with finesse through the minerals and the beautiful acids. Enormous aftertaste in which the minerals are prominent. All in all, the Latour-Giraud Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières is a sturdy white Burgundy coming from beautiful (very small) vineyards in which minerality plays the leading role.

The 2015 Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières from Domaine Latour Giraud, one of the largest landowners in this vineyard, is very attractive, wafting from the glass with notes of crisp green pear, lemon oil, hazelnut, baking spice and wheat toast. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, bright and vibrant, with a bracing line of acidity, good concentration and a penetrating finish. This is a notably tensile, bright 2015 that will need a couple of years in the cellar to come together.

LOUIS LATOUR MEURSAULT 1ER CRU GENEVRIÈRES 2021
Score: 94
Concentrated and graceful, this is citrusy and fresh and interlocks so beautifully with the chalky acidity on the full-bodied palate. Some aniseed character. The very long stony and salty finish suggests this has a wonderful future ahead of it. Drink or hold.

The history of Latour-Giraud spans three centuries and begins at the end of the 17th century. The oldest known ancestor is Jean Latour-Boillot, born around 1680. At that time, the vine was already the most important wage. The presence of the Latour family on the vineyard appears during the French Revolution through the person of Jean Latour-Mouquin, born in 1748 and grandson of Jean Latour-Boillot. The Giraud family settled in Côte d'Or for a long time, had founded a distillery in the hospital of Meursault around 1845. This distillery operated until 1914, producing Fine of Bourgogne, from the Marc of Bourgogne, as well as the famous Burgundy.
Today it is run by Jean-Pierre Latour who takes care of wine production, winemaking, breeding and marketing. He is assisted in his work by his sister Florence who deals with the administrative part. The vineyards of Latour-Giraud consist of 10 hectares. They only produce classified wines, including about 80% white wines and 20% red wines. The majority of the white vines are in five appellations of 1st Vintage of Meursault: Les Genevrières, Les Charmes, Les Perrières, Les Bouchères and Le Poruzot. With 2 hectares in Meursault Genevrières, Latour-Giraud is the main owner of this excellent first vintage. He also owns a piece of first crop in the northern border of Puligny Montrachet, with the climate of Champs-Canet.
