Winery
Domaine Anne Gros is one of the most respected producers in Burgundy. Since Anne Gros took over the family estate, she has developed a style known for precision, elegance, and a pure expression of each climat. The estate owns plots in some of the most prestigious appellations of the Côte de Nuits, including Richebourg, Clos Vougeot, and Grands Échezeaux. Through careful vineyard management, low yields, and refined vinification, wines are produced that impressively reflect the character of their origin. You can find more information about this winery in the Winery tab.
Origin and terroir
Grands Échezeaux Grand Cru is situated directly next to the famous vineyards of Échezeaux and Clos de Vougeot in Flagey-Échezeaux. The soil consists of calcareous clay with excellent drainage, allowing Pinot Noir to develop both power and refinement here. The combination of old vines, an ideal exposure, and a calcareous subsoil yields grapes with great tension, aromatic complexity, and a striking mineral signature. Grands Échezeaux is known for its combination of structure, elegance, and great aging potential.
Grapes and vineyard management
This Grand Cru is made from 100% Pinot Noir. The grapes are harvested entirely by hand and carefully selected before processing. Thanks to low yields and sustainable vineyard practices, the grapes retain their natural balance of ripeness, freshness, and concentration. Only the best bunches are used for this prestigious cuvée, allowing the wine to display a very pure expression of the terroir.
Vinification and aging
After careful selection, the grapes ferment naturally to preserve aromatic purity to the maximum. Subsequently, the wine ages for approximately sixteen to eighteen months in French oak barriques, about sixty percent of which are new. The aging is carefully tailored to the character of the wine and supports the structure without overpowering the terroir. During maturation, sur lie aging contributes extra depth, refinement, and a silky texture.
Color, smell and taste
The wine displays a bright ruby red color. The aroma opens with red and black currants, ripe cherries, and blackberries, followed by notes of forest floor, graphite, violets, and subtle spiciness. In the background, light notes of cedarwood, caramel, and fine spices are present, stemming from the oak aging. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with ripe red fruit, refined acidity, and a velvety texture. The tannins are fine-grained and give the wine great length. The finish is rich, harmonious, and elegant, with mineral tension and a long, refined finale.
Style and character
Grands Échezeaux combines the concentration of a great Grand Cru with the refined signature of Anne Gros. The wine possesses great depth and ripe fruit, yet remains remarkably elegant. In its youth, it is still compact and somewhat closed. With bottle aging, it will develop more complexity, in which fruit, spiciness, minerality, and subtle tertiary aromas come into beautiful balance.
Volume
The 2023 vintage in the Côte de Nuits produced wines of great aromatic intensity, ripe fruit, and excellent freshness. Grands Échezeaux benefited from these conditions, combining concentration with finesse and aging potential. The alcohol content is expected to be approximately 13.5%. The drinking window runs from 2028 to 2042, during which the wine will continue to refine over many years.
Food and wine pairings
This Grand Cru is perfectly suited to roe deer, venison, veal fillet, Bresse chicken with morels, duck breast, and refined dishes with black truffle. Mushrooms, game birds, and aged hard cheeses also make excellent pairings. Serve the wine at around 16°C and allow it sufficient time to open up fully.

From: The Lord Giveth…Burgundy 2023 (Jan 2025)
The 2023 Grands-Echézeaux Grand Cru, matured in around 60% new oak, has a very well-defined bouquet with a mixture of red and black fruit, forest floor and light graphite scents. There is just a little herbaceousness in the background, with a slight caramel note emanating from the wood. The palate is medium-bodied with a ripe veneer of red fruit, though there is still a touch of herbaceousness underneath. There is quite a lot of sucrosity in this Grand Cru, particularly on the finish. I probably prefer the 2022.
