Persoonlijke gegevens
Clos Fourtet is situated directly opposite the large church of Saint-Emilion. The terroir consists of clay-loam soil with a high limestone content. The harvest is done by hand, and as with all great houses, the first selection takes place in the vineyard. Clos Fourtet is a blend of predominantly Merlot with a small percentage of both Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, and has aged for 16 months in 60% new and 40% second-year French oak barriques.
The Clos Fourtet is deep garnet purple in color and opens over time with notes of blackberries, plums, and wild blueberries, plus notes of forest floor, lavender, baking herbs, and potpourri. The taste is full-bodied and has an amazing texture of soft, gentle tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long and fragrant with berry/herb notes and some minerality.

The 2023 Clos Fourtet is especially suave and refined this year, wafting from the glass with deep aromas of red berries, licorice, violets and pencil shavings, framed by a nicely integrated patina of new oak. Medium to full-bodied, supple and layered, with a velvety attack that segues into a bright, precise mid-palate, it's pure and lively, concluding with a mineral finish.

CLOS FOURTET ST.-EMILION 2023
Score
97-98
This is so full of energy. It’s full-bodied with electrified tannins and a long, long finish. So polish and focus here with exquisite balance and length.

The 2023 Clos Fourtet is pure class. Elegant and soaring, the 2023 offers up an exciting mélange of dark-toned fruit, leather, incense, dried herbs, pencil shavings and crushed rocks. Beams of supporting limestone-infused tannin and acid give Clos Fourtet is super-distinctive feel. The long, enduring finish is a thing of beauty. Clos Fourtet remains a benchmark example of wines from Saint-Émilion's famed limestone plateau. Tasted two times.

Clos Fourtet owes its reputation to the Rulleau and Carles families, lords of Figeac, who acquired these vineyards in the 18th century with a special natural drainage. In 2001, Fourtet came into the possession of the Cuvelier family, who kept Fourtet's status as 1st Grand Cru Classé with great passion and investment. This noble 1st Grand Cru Classé is located right in front of the great church of Saint-Emilion, almost in the historic heart of the ancient town. The cellars of the walled vineyards (the Clos) consist of no less than three floors of corridors carved in the caves. Almost as impressive as the wine.
