Description
Château Smith Haut-Lafitte Winery
Château Smith Haut-Lafitte is one of Pessac-Léognan's leading estates and has been run by the Cathiard family since the 1990s. The winery has been fully certified organic since 2019 and has invested for decades in sustainable viticulture, biodiversity, and precision in the cellar. In both red and white, the focus is on tension, structure, and terroir expression, with a style that combines power with refinement and clear aging potential.
More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Region, climate and location
Château Smith Haut-Lafitte is located in the southern part of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, on gravelly soils with sub-layers of sand and clay. These soils provide good drainage and give the wines their characteristic tension and mineral structure. The 2023 vintage was characterized by low yields and small, thick-skinned berries. Mold problems with Merlot resulted in an unprecedentedly large proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, which strongly shaped the character of this vintage.
Smith Haut-Lafitte is the estate's Grand Vin, produced exclusively from the finest plots and selections. In 2023, this wine represents approximately one-third of the total harvest, underscoring the rigorous selection and concentration of the final result.
Vineyards and grape varieties
The 2023 blend consists of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. The grapes come from carefully selected plots surrounding the château. Due to the vintage's conditions, Cabernet Sauvignon plays a dominant role, resulting in a pronounced structure and a clear left-Bordeaux profile.
Harvest, vinification and maturation
The grapes were hand-harvested and rigorously selected. Vinification focused on extraction while preserving freshness, with relatively cool and long macerations and controlled pigeages. Maturation took place in approximately 60% new oak barrels from the château's own cooperage, with the use of wood enhancing structure and texture. The 2023 vintage is powerful and compact, with an emphasis on precision and aging potential.
Color, smell and taste
The wine displays a deep, dark ruby red color. The nose opens with concentrated aromas of wild berries, blackberries, mulberries, and blueberries, complemented by floral notes, spices, and a refined oaky influence. Yohan Castaing of The Wine Advocate emphasizes the elegant oak and mineral tension evident early on.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a dense core of dark fruit, clear structure, and fine-grained tannins. The Cabernet dominance translates into grip, length, and a pronounced texture, without making the wine heavy or ponderous. According to Antonio Galloni of Vinous, this is a powerful, almost explosive Smith Haut-Lafitte that needs time to fully develop, but already impresses with its intensity and balance. The finish is long, mineral, and layered.
Development and drinking window
The 2023 Smith Haut-Lafitte is designed for extended aging. The various assessments suggest several drinking windows: an early approach from around 2025 for those who want to follow the wine young, with optimal development expected between 2030 and 2055. The combination of concentration, acidity, and tannins points to longevity.
Summary of professional reviews
Yohan Castaing of The Wine Advocate rates the wine 94–96 points, emphasizing the complexity, structure, and Cabernet-driven character of this vintage. Antonio Galloni of Vinous awards it 95–97 points, describing the wine as powerful and intense, with small yields and thick skins providing the foundation for its depth and texture. Both reviewers consider this a serious, long-lived Smith Haut-Lafitte that will benefit from aging.

In de neus komen aroma’s van wilde bessen, bramen en moerbei naar voren, aangevuld met florale tonen en een verfijnde houtinvloed die samen zorgen voor een complexe en elegante geur. The 2023 Smith Haut Lafitte is a brilliant wine, revealing a complex, elegantly oaky bouquet of dark wild berries, mulberries, blueberries, flowers and spices. Medium to full-bodied, seamless and rich, it has a fleshy core of fruit with good concentration and refined, structured tannins that segues into a long, penetrating and mineral finish. Crafted with an unprecedented majority of Cabernet Sauvignon—due to mildew affecting the Merlot—this Smith Haut Lafitte highlights a distinctly Cabernet-driven texture that authentically reflects its terroir despite a slightly more structured character. This blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, matured in 60% new oak barrels, represents one-third of the entire crop.
Since achieving organic certification with the 2019 vintage, Smith Haut Lafitte has completely transformed its agricultural practices. The estate eliminated herbicides back in 1991, dramatically reducing chemical treatments and initially experiencing reduced yields. However, advancements in technology and methods have since alleviated these challenges. The vineyard employs cover crops in central and western sections where drainage is poor, and hedges have been planted to foster biodiversity. Ultraviolet treatments are being tested as a substitute for copper sulfate to further reduce chemical dependency. The winemaking process has also been refined to be less invasive: reds undergo cool, extended macerations with periodic punch-downs, while whites benefit from whole-cluster pressing in an inverted press, enhancing structural elegance and vitality in the wines. Since 1995, the Cathiards have developed their own nursery in collaboration with Bérillon for massal selection, and the estate boasts an in-house cooperage, sourcing oak from Tronçais and Jupilles for reds and Loches for whites, which adds tension. In 2023, the result is a lineup of bright and lively wines, both reds and whites, featuring a firm, structured mid-palate. These could gain even further elegance with winemaking practices perfectly tailored to the specific terroirs.

The 2023 Smith Haut Lafitte is a powerhouse. In recent years, the Grand Vin has shifted toward a bit more nuance than in the past, but in 2023, small yields and thick skins yielded a somber, explosive Grand Vin. It will need many years to be at its most expressive. Blackberry, gravel, licorice, spice, plum and chocolate are some of the many notes that emerge from the glass. Readers will find a wine of real substance and textural intensity, framed by vibrant acids. A touch of air works wonders here.

Château Smith Haut-Lafitte has 56ha of vineyard and is owned by Daniel and Florence Cathiard. Since their purchase in 1990, the quality has increased enormously, thanks to the works in the vineyard and the investments in a state-of-the-art installation. In 2010 these efforts were rewarded by Parker with a score of 100/100 for their 2009 vintage. Ch. Smith Haut Lafitte is a very demonstrative wine, very balanced and extremely concentrated with great aging potential. Visitors to the castle can also have a very luxurious dinner, stay overnight or enjoy the 'vinotherapy' in 'Les Sources de Caudalie'.
Château Smith Haut-Lafitte is located in the commune of Martillac, near the city of Bordeaux. It is a very impressive Château belonging to the Pessac-Léognan appellation and it produces a wine classified as Grand Cru Classé from the Graves classification.

From: Bordeaux at the Crossroads: 2023 En Primeur (April 2024)

Food Pairings
