Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 2023
The nose of the 2023 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is refined, elegant and complex, with wonderful aromas of licorice and blackcurrants, as well as floral nuances of red roses and peonies. Furthermore, the wine reveals more mineral notes of earth and roots, with hints of Virginia tobacco. On the palate the wine starts remarkably straightforward, then becomes full-bodied with controlled strength and a well-balanced extraction mid-palate. The delicious and tasty finish is supported by polished and precise tannins. Pastry, juicy and fruity notes (blue and black fruits) combine with cedar aromas, adding finesse and complexity.
Composition and Maturation
The blend of the 2023 vintage consists of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc. The wine has matured for 18 months in oak barrels, of which 60% new oak. The traditional technique of 'rack à l'esquive' and fining with egg white have been used to further refine the wine.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested from vineyard plots and vinification is done by gravity in temperature-controlled conical stainless steel tanks. The yield is 41 hectoliters per hectare. The wine has an alcohol content of 13% and a pH of 3.6. Pressure wines reach an alcohol content of 14.7%.
Climate and Harvest
The year 2023 saw remarkably high annual rainfall, while the growing season was one of the driest in the past 20 years, with some heat waves. The winter was relatively mild, which allowed for an early outbreak of buds in the first half of April. The growing period was characterized by regular rain showers and a high threat of mildew. Thanks to a lot of effort and scattered rainfall, the threat of vineyard diseases was kept under control, allowing flowering to take place in late May and véraison in early August. The harvest took place from September 6 to 30, under excellent weather conditions, which allowed the grapes to be picked at the ideal time.
Vineyard management
The vineyards of Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande cover an area of 114 hectares, of which 92 hectares are in production. The soil consists of gravel, clay and sand, with a planting density of 9000 vines per hectare and an average vineyard age of 28 years. The winery is in the third year of its conversion to 100% organic farming, with 65% of the vineyards following biodynamic practices.
Conclusion
The 2023 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a brilliant wine that combines pure and expressive black fruits, violets and graphite with a refined symmetry and intense aftertaste. This wine promises great storage potential and is an example of elegance, power and refinement. For lovers of Bordeaux wines, this is a wine to look forward to and cherish for years to come.

The 2023 Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a brilliant wine that will be worth a special effort to track down. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of wild berries and cassis mingled with licorice, lilac, iris root, violet, burning embers and pencil shavings, it's medium to full-bodied, seamless and complete, with a deep, layered core of cool fruit that largely conceals it's ultra-refined structuring tannins. At a very measured 13% alcohol and 3.67 pH, it unites all Pichon Comtesse's sensuality with unimpeachable Pauillac classicism. The 2023 is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc.

Wow. This is really excellent, with superb finesse and focus. It has tight density that is almost diamond-like in its brilliance. Medium to full body, with a quality of tannin that is incredibly seamless. Like silk in texture. A top Pichon Lalande. From organic and biodynamically grown grapes. 80% cabernet sauvignon, 17% merlot and 3% cabernet franc. May be better than 2022.

The 2023 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande was picked from September 6 until 29, with some rain on September 20 in the middle of Cabernet picking. But, Nicolas Glumineau remarked that the vineyard/fruit was in good condition; one day of rain did not affect the quality. The 2023 has a quintessential Comtesse bouquet, displaying pure and expressive black fruit laced with violet and graphite, delivered with impressive delineation. The palate is very refined on the entry. This is armed with beguiling symmetry—poised yet intense on the finish. It doesn’t exert huge grip because it knows it doesn't need to, and it fans out gloriously. Outstanding.
