Description
In the early 1980s, Philippine de Rothschild decided to plant a few hectares of the vineyard with white grape varieties. The sandy, gravelly soil is planted with Sauvignon Blanc (52%), Semillon (39%), Sauvignon Gris (8%) and Muscadelle (1%) at a density of 9,000 vines per hectare to encourage competition between the vines. 50% of the wine is aged in new oak barrels. Rich, complex and elegant, Mouton Rothschild Aile d'Argent, despite being produced in very limited quantities, has quickly become a benchmark for lovers of fine white Bordeaux wines.
Aile d'Argent is the title of a children's story that father Baron Philippe de Rothschild read to his children. It was a kind of self-invented fairy tale about the flying teapot. The teapot was called Aile d'Argent, Silver Wing. When the war broke out, Philippe de Rothschild was arrested (because of his Jewish background). In prison he wrote the story Aile d'Argent la Magique (Magical Silver Wing) from memory and it was published by Gallimard in 1947.
The Mouton Rotschild Aile d'Argent is pale yellow with green nuances, the wine is both intense and expressive on the nose. It starts with aromas of citrus and white fruits and then, after some air, reveals notes of tropical fruits, minerals and white pepper. From a fresh and spicy attack with hints of lemon and spices, the taste becomes softer and creamier, with notes of pastry and apricot, while toasted and roasted accents accompany the finish harmoniously.

Evoking aromas of white flowers, lemon oil, lime tree leaves and spring flowers, the 2023 Aile d'Argent is medium to full-bodied, charming and enveloping with a fleshy core of fruit and a mouthwatering, long finish. While not as dense or fleshy as previous iterations, this vintage is a notable success within its context. It is a blend of 50% Sauvignon Blanc, 44.5% Sauvignon Gris and 0.5% Muscadelle.

The density and beauty to this is so attractive, with a lush and flavorful character, yet it’s neatly framed by acidity and minerally undertones. Lively and salty. Part of the vineyard is on limestone, which gives that sea-salt undertone. Savory. Fresh at the end. 50% sauvignon blanc, 44.5% semillon, 5% sauvignon gris and 0.5% muscadelle.

From: Bordeaux at the Crossroads: 2023 En Primeur (April 2024)
The 2023 Aile d’Argent is a rich, heady, wine that very much captures the radiant style of the year in its generous textural feel. Tangerine peel, spice, menthol, lime, dried flowers and light tropical accents abound, The 2023 is a serious dry white. There’s a bit more Sémillon in the blend and a greater emphasis on texture and structure than usual, while the oak imprint and exotic character of some previous editions have been toned down.

The 2023 Aile d'Argent contains a little more Sémillon than usual (44.5%) to add texture to the blend. It has a lovely bouquet with grapefruit, hints of lime cordial, chamomile and lanolin. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, fresh and focused, with just a slight bitter lemon note imparting tension. A hint of ginger rises on the aftertaste. Superb.

Winemaker Emmanuel Danjoy and co-owner Philippe Sereys de Rothschild were on hand to guide me through their 2023s at Mouton-Rothschild. "We started picking on September 7, and then for the next two weeks, we just picked the Merlot, Cabernet Franc and young Cabernet Sauvignon blocks, so by September 23, we had only picked one-third of the crop,” Danjoy tells me. “So, all the Cabernet Sauvignon was picked in the final week of September. The vines relaxed after the September showers, giving us more polished tannins. This year, we used slightly less pressed wine as we had lots of tannins from the skin to choose from.”

Gorgeous tropical notes on the nose, pineapple, mango, lemon, fresh but ripe and lively with elderflower, acacia flowers, green apple and citrus fruits. Nicely weighted on the palate. A shot of bright mango and apple with flecks of lime and a creamy lemon yoghurt type texture, thick but enjoyable. Keeps its coolness, not so tense or necessarily streamlined but generous flavour all the way through. A citrus kick and lift at the end brings the freshness and tang back, with a salinity that is moreish. Joyful and really quite approachable still with weight and texture. Will be bottled in the first week of June. Very moreish. Harvest 22-31st August. A yield of 16.7hl/ha. 1% Muscadelle completes the blend. 3.18 PH. 3.8 g/l total acidity. Aged 45% in new barrels.

Another impressive Bordeaux Blanc from the Médoc, the 2022 Château Mouton Rothschild Aile D'Argent Blanc is based on 52% Sauvignon Blanc, 39% Sémillon, 8% Sauvignon Gris, and the rest Muscadelle. Still aging in 45% new oak, it has a ripe, tropical nose of minty herbs, exotic flowers, and assorted citrus and melon-like fruits. It's clean, vibrant, and medium-bodied, with bright acidity and a great finish.

Medium yellow green, silver reflections. Fine yellow tropical fruit, hints of ripe mango, white flowers and lime zest. Full-bodied and elegant, white peach, delicate pineapple note, fine acidity, mineral and lemony. Well lasting, subtle fruit on the finish, good ageing potential.

Don't expect a big production of the white in 2022, as they saw just 16hl/h yields, mainly because Sémillon had such tiny berries, with high skin to juice ratio making things intense and concentrated. Think mango, pineapple, lemongrass, lime and mandarin zest, with a supple texture, with a delicious, and necessary, kick of bitterness on the finish. There has been a migration towards cooler terroir for the whites, still in their own vineyards either in Pauillac or just over appellation boundary. 45% new oak, 100% whole bunch pressing, zero malolactic (which is not always the case in Mouton), 3.18ph with zero adjustment ('this is not even something we ever discuss'). Harvest August 22 to 30. Second full year of Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy as technical director across the Mouton wines.

In 1853, Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild buys the Château Brane-Mouton estate at auction because he wants to serve his own wine to his prestigious guests. The estate was located in Pauillac, in the heart of the Médoc, and would henceforth bear his name: Château Mouton Rothschild. In 1922, the estate came into the hands of Baron Philippe de Rothschild, the great-grandson of Baron Nathaniel. 2 years later, he insists that all wine, which until then had been delivered in barrels to wine merchants in Bordeaux, be bottled in the castle. This decision meant that more storage space was needed. That is why the spectacular 100-meter Grand Chai (Great Barrel Hall), designed by the architect Charles Siclis, was built in 1926. In 1962 a museum was even opened on the estate. It was thus officially confirmed after a decree signed by Jacques Chirac, then Minister of Agriculture. Philippe's daughter, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, has taken over her father's estate and over the years has continued to modernize this beautiful family business. She has passed on her excellent dedication and working method to her 3 children, Camille Sereys de Rothschild, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild and Julien de Beaumarchais, who continue to manage the estates with the same ambition. This producer has 90 hectares of vineyard and was led by his daughter Baroness Philippine de Rothschild years after the death of her father Philippe. After the death of Philippine in 2014, son Philippe Sereys de Rothschild is ultimately responsible and the companies (in addition to Mouton, including Château Clerc Milon, Château d'Armailhac, Mouton Cadet, Opus One and Almaviva) are managed together with sister Camille and half-brother Julien. Second wine is called Petit Mouton and they produce a white wine called Aile d'Argent.
The vineyards of Château Mouton Rothschild are located northwest of Bordeaux, on the edge of the Medoc. The vines are planted on a narrow strip of land 80 km long and 5 to 10 km wide, close to the river, which moderates temperature differences. Bordering the northern border of the Landes forest, the Medoc benefits from the softness of its maritime climate while being protected at the same time. In 1855, the best 61 wines from the Haut-Médoc were qualified as 'Grand Cru Classé', again subdivided into 1st to 5th Cru. The selection was based on the prices paid for the wines since about 1750. The 1st cru includes Château Lafite, Latour, Margaux, and Haut-Brion. In 1973, Château Mouton was added to these four.
Pauillac is located on the Gironde, north west of the city of Bordeaux. Pauillac (which holds 1,200ha) is one of the best wine regions in the Haut-Médoc and is located below Saint-Estèphe. The village has 3 Premier Grands Cru Classés: Château Latour, Château Lafite Rothschild and Château Mouton Rothschild. A total of 18 Grand Cru Classés from Pauillac account for 80% of the vineyard area. The upper layer of this wine region consists of gravel, with a subsoil of clay and limestone.
