Description
The harvest took place in several sessions from September 19 to October 10. Each batch of grapes was harvested by hand, with each bunch of grapes carefully placed in crates and selected. The sorting takes place both in the vineyard and in the cellar - so that only the best grapes end up in the wine. The alcoholic fermentation took place for 8 to 12 days, with only native yeasts found on the skins of the grapes. To maintain ideal conditions, both stainless steel tanks and concrete vats were used during fermentation, both of which are thermoregulable. The wine matures for 12 to 14 months, with a significant portion of the time spent in new barrels (60%). The nuances of the vintage year all come together in the ripening process. While the wine is in barrels, it matures on the fine lees and is stirred regularly.
Château Malescot St Exupery takes a minimalist approach to winemaking - the wine is left unfermented, unfined and unfiltered, and is only crossed once during the maturation process. The blend for Malescot 2023 has been carefully composed and includes the following grape varieties: 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 5% Petit-Verdot
The Château Malescot St Exupery has a beautiful dark and deep color. On the nose it reveals intense aromas of ripe black fruit, as well as delicate notes of licorice and chocolate. The tannin structure is solid, the tannins are ripe and silky soft. In the mouth the wine is full, generous, with a nice acidity that brings freshness and balance. The aftertaste is long and persistent. Fruity and spicy notes remain present.

“Malescot has often shone thanks to Caberner Sauvignon. Once again, this variety will be responsible for an excellent Chateau Malescot St-Exupéry 2023.” Michel Rolland.

Wine Advocate 93-95/100 : “One of the most suave, classy vintages from this estate in some years, the 2023 Malescot St. Exupery is a blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. Wafting from the glass with aromas of cherries, berries, licorice and pencil shavings, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy and succulent, with good depth at the core, supple tannins and a harmonious, integrated profile. Part of the blend is maturing in foudre”.

James Suckling 96-97/100 : “This has a very deep and beautiful palate with cherries, chocolate, hazelnut and orange peel. Pretty blackcurrants and blue berries, too. Medium body. The finish has gorgeous al-dente fruit at the end and is always subtle. Open tannins. A blend of 58% cabernet sauvignon, 37% merlot, and 5% petit Verdot”.

From: Bordeaux at the Crossroads: 2023 En Primeur (April 2024)
The 2023 Malescot St. Exupéry is a powerful Margaux that will need a bit of time to come together. Potent tannins wrap around a core of red/purplish fruit, lavender, mint and dried herbs. These days, Malescot is not quite as unyielding as it used to be, but this remains a decidedly old-school Margaux in style and overall philosophy.

In 1955, Paul and Roger Zuger acquired the estate, when it had no more than 7 hectares - today the property consists of 28 hectares. Three generations of the Zuger family have worked in turn to put the estate back on the map and restore its reputation. In 1994 Jean- Luc took over from his father Roger, and the estate continues to grow from strength to strength.
Château Malescot St Exupéry dates back to the 18th century, with records of viticulture on the estate as early as 1616. In 1865, the estate was classified as a Third Growth (Troisième Cru) in the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855. Over the years, it has seen several owners and undergone various changes, but it has maintained a reputation for producing high-quality Bordeaux wines.
The estate has HVE certification. (High Environmental Value) - which means they have to adhere to strict vineyard protocols and constantly work towards more biodiversity in the vineyards.
