Description
Château la Mission Haut-Brion is located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, classified as a Cru in the 1953 Graves classification. La Mission Haut-Brion is a sister winery to Château Haut-Brion. The winery belongs to the Graves wine region, in the commune of Talence, with an additional estate in Pessac. The winery has also produced a second wine from younger vines, La Chapelle de la Mission, since the 1991 vintage, and the dry white wine Château La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc since the merger with Château Laville Haut-Brion in 2010.
The vineyards stretch across 21 hectares between Pessac and Léognan, with a distribution of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, and 7% Cabernet Franc. The estate produces an average of between 6,000 and 7,000 cases of its grand vin, La Mission Haut-Brion, annually. The second wine, La Chapelle de la Mission, produces an average of 4,000 cases. The white Château La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc has an annual production of 500 to 700 cases.
In the vineyard
The winter of 2023 was characterized by relatively low temperatures and heavy rainfall. Budbreak occurred in mid-March. The rainy weather and warm days encouraged the vines to grow continuously at a hectic pace. The teams had to be vigilant and closely monitor the vineyard to prevent any risk of disease and intervene quickly.
Thanks to the vineyard's favorable location, where the air circulates well and the leaves don't remain damp for long, and the winegrowers' constant vigilance, diseases such as powdery mildew were prevented. Flowering and bunch formation took place under excellent conditions, promising an abundant grape harvest.
Throughout the season, significant attention was paid to green work. Leaf thinning was carried out on the east side of half the vineyard. Green harvests were increased, while pruning was limited to maintain the coolness of the soil and protect the grapes from sunburn, allowing them to benefit from the shade.
Harvest of the La Mission Haut-Brion 2023
The red grape harvest began on September 6th, under favorable weather conditions, though it was very hot. The grapes were ripe and concentrated for all varieties, with an abundance of phenolic compounds rarely seen before and very good sugar levels. The juices were fresh and fruity. The abundant harvest stretched over 20 days for all plots and under summery weather conditions. 69.5% of the grapes were harvested in new wooden barrels.
Blend
52.7% Merlot
29.6% Cabernet Sauvignon
17.7% Cabernet Franc

The 2023 La Mission Haut-Brion unwinds in the glass to reveal aromas of ripe red fruits, dark wild berries, spring flowers, burning embers and lilac. Medium to full-bodied, rich and concentrated, it’s layered and textural with a dense core of fruit underpinned by youthfully firm structuring tannins. This blend of 52.7% Merlot, 29.6% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17.7% Cabernet Franc its likely to become fleshier and more enveloping with barrel maturation.

Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections. Restrained, black fruit of blackberries and cherries, a hint of blueberries, a hint of vanilla and fine oak. Juicy, elegant, shows good spice and freshness, integrated wood, subtle fruit in the finish, a deep wine with length and good ageing potential”. - Falstaf
