Of all the premier crus of Bordeaux, Haut-Brion is the greatest charmer, always elegant and refined and always in top condition, young or old. Haut-Brion is the oldest and historically the most colorful wine estate in the Gironde - it was here in the 17th century that the first single-vineyard Bordeaux was made, first served in London coffee houses and praised by many leading writers. In 1935 the winery was purchased by Clarence Dillon, an American banker. He invested large sums in renovating the chai and the vineyard. In 1960, Haut-Brion became the first premier cru to replace wooden barrels with stainless steel tanks. In 1983, the Dillon family purchased the adjacent Château la Mission Haut-Brion. Haut-Brion is almost always the fastest-maturing and most accessible of the premier crus, but that casual, young charm is deceptive, because the wine ages beautifully.
Le Clarence de Haut-Brion, 2nd vin du Château Haut-Brion is the second wine from Ch. Haut Brion, which used to be called 'Bahans Haut Brion'. The name 'Clarence' is a tribute to the American Banker Clarence Dillon who bought the domain in 1935. Today it is his descendant, Prince Robert de Luxembourg, who is the director and owner. The second wine is of a very high level and can compete with the first wines of many other Pessac Léognans.
Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is a blend of 55.5% Merlot, 40.9% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3.6% Cabernet Franc. The 2023 presents itself with a very beautiful, bright deep red color, with purple hues. The first nose is quite inconspicuous, but gradually reveals notes of ripe fruit, especially fleshy and sun-drenched blackberries. At first taste the wine is sleek, powerful and dynamic. It develops with a creamy sensation and a taste of blackberry jelly. The aftertaste is tannic but full of flavor.

With aromas of ripe raspberries, dark wild berries and flowers, the 2023 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is a moderately weighted, firm and dense wine on the palate with sweet structuring tannins and a long, vibrant finish. This blend of 55.5% Merlot, 40.9% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3.6% Cabernet Franc is a great bottle in the making.

Country: France
Region: Bordeaux
Vintage: 2023
Score: 95-96
Intensity and focus to this, with length and raciness for the second wine of Haut-Brion, showing polish and a refined texture. It’s medium-bodied with ultra-fine tannins and an exquisite finish. Caressing. 55.5% merlot, 40.9% cabernet sauvignon and 3.6% cabernet franc.

From: Bordeaux at the Crossroads: 2023 En Primeur (April 2024)
The 2023 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is a heady wine. Here, the tannins are especially polished, almost uncharacteristically so, even through they are very much present. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, spice, new leather and gravel build effortlessly in the glass. Bright acids punctuate the finish. The 2023 is a showy Clarence with tons of character.
- By Antonio Galloni on April 2024
There is plenty to like in the 2023 reds from both La Mission Haut-Brion and Haut-Brion. “It is the second most tannic year here, after only 2010,” Deputy Managing Director Jean-Philippe Delmas told me. That seems to be especially evident at La Mission, where the reds have a feeling of edginess in the tannins. Readers should also note that all the whites are Sauvignon Blanc--driven, as Sémillon was picked in the middle of a heat wave.
