Description
Of all Bordeaux's premier crus, Haut-Brion is the most charming, always elegant and refined, and always in peak condition, whether young or old. Haut-Brion is the oldest and historically most colorful winery in the Gironde – it was here that, in the 17th century, the first single-vineyard Bordeaux was made, first served in London coffee houses, and praised by many prominent writers. In 1935, the estate was purchased by Clarence Dillon, an American banker. He invested heavily in renovating the chai and the vineyard. In 1960, Haut-Brion became the first premier cru to replace the wooden barrels with stainless steel tanks. In 1983, the Dillon family purchased the adjacent Château la Mission Haut-Brion. Haut-Brion is almost always the fastest-ripening and most accessible of the premier crus, but that effortless, youthful charm is deceptive, as the wine ages beautifully.
Clarence de Haut-Brion, Château Haut-Brion's second wine, is the second wine of Château Haut-Brion, formerly known as "Bahans Haut Brion." The name "Clarence" is a tribute to the American banker Clarence Dillon, who purchased the estate in 1935. Today, his descendant, Prince Robert de Luxembourg, is its director and owner. This second wine is of a very high standard and rivals the first wines of many other Pessac Léognans.
Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is a blend of 55.5% Merlot, 40.9% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 3.6% Cabernet Franc. The 2023 vintage presents itself with a beautiful, bright, deep red color, with purple hues. The initial nose is rather unassuming, but gradually reveals notes of ripe fruit, particularly fleshy and sun-drenched blackberries. Upon first taste, the wine is taut, powerful, and dynamic. It develops with a creamy sensation and a hint of blackberry jelly. The finish is tannic yet full-bodied.

With aromas of ripe raspberries, dark wild berries and flowers, the 2023 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is a moderately weighted, firm and dense wine on the palate with sweet structuring tannins and a long, vibrant finish. This blend of 55.5% Merlot, 40.9% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3.6% Cabernet Franc is a great bottle in the making.

Intensity and focus to this, with length and raciness for the second wine of Haut-Brion, showing polish and a refined texture. It’s medium-bodied with ultra-fine tannins and an exquisite finish. Caressing. 55.5% merlot, 40.9% cabernet sauvignon and 3.6% cabernet franc.

From: Bordeaux at the Crossroads: 2023 En Primeur (April 2024)
The 2023 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is a heady wine. Here, the tannins are especially polished, almost uncharacteristically so, even through they are very much present. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, spice, new leather and gravel build effortlessly in the glass. Bright acids punctuate the finish. The 2023 is a showy Clarence with tons of character.
- By Antonio Galloni on April 2024
There is plenty to like in the 2023 reds from both La Mission Haut-Brion and Haut-Brion. “It is the second most tannic year here, after only 2010,” Deputy Managing Director Jean-Philippe Delmas told me. That seems to be especially evident at La Mission, where the reds have a feeling of edginess in the tannins. Readers should also note that all the whites are Sauvignon Blanc--driven, as Sémillon was picked in the middle of a heat wave.
