Of all the premier crus of Bordeaux, Haut-Brion is the greatest charmer, always elegant and refined and always in top condition, young or old. Haut-Brion is the oldest and historically the most colorful wine estate in the Gironde - it was here in the 17th century that the first single-vineyard Bordeaux was made, first served in London coffee houses and praised by many leading writers. In 1935 the winery was purchased by Clarence Dillon, an American banker. He invested large sums in renovating the chai and the vineyard. In 1960, Haut-Brion became the first premier cru to replace wooden barrels with stainless steel tanks. In 1983, the Dillon family purchased the adjacent Château la Mission Haut-Brion.
Château Haut-Brion 2023 Rouge
In the Vineyard
The winter of 2023 was rainy and relatively cold. Once the buds budded in mid-March, the vine's growth became extremely vigorous, encouraged by regular rainfall and warm days. This rapid growth required teams to take immediate action in the vineyard, where the health of the vines had to be closely monitored. The efforts of all winegrowers, as well as the very privileged location of the vineyard, where the leaves remain moist for a short time thanks to good air circulation, made it possible to prevent the spread of mildew during the growing season, despite the pressure it entailed.
The flowering took place under excellent conditions and indicated an abundant harvest. This year called for more green work: significant green harvests and leaf thinning were done on the east side of the rows in half the vineyard. On the other hand, pruning was limited to maintain coolness in the soil and to protect the grapes thanks to the shade provided.
2023 was a technical year for vineyard management, requiring precision and rapid response from the teams. The strength of this almost "blessed" terroir is once again demonstrated by an abundant, healthy harvest of high quality.
Harvest
The harvest of red grapes started on September 6, with still very warm weather. Ripeness was excellent for all varieties and the grapes showed excellent concentration, rich in sugar and phenolic compounds. The berries were fresh and ripe, packed with flavor. The harvest was plentiful and this significantly extended the harvest period, which continued into October, with summer weather still present. Days of heat waves did not take away from the fruity, fresh character of this vintage.
2023 Château Haut-Brion Rouge Tasting Notes
A beautiful dark, deep red color, with purple hues. At this stage the scent is still quite discreet. When rolled, the wine reveals a complex multitude of aromas, with notes of perfectly ripe red and black fruit. There are already hints of licorice and smoky notes, indicators of excellent bottles of this wine. The first taste is remarkable for its softness and immediate presence. The wine then develops, powerful but still delicious, to finish long and tasty. It is undoubtedly a magnificent Haut-Brion!

The 2023 Haut-Brion exhibits a more Cabernet-inflected personality than the richer 2022, offering up a deep but youthfully reserved bouquet of dark wild berries, licorice, smoke and pencil lead mingled with notions of cigar wrapper, nicely integrated new oak and spices. Full-bodied, deep and velvety, it’s layered and concentrated, with a deep core of fruit structured around abundant but velvety tannins, concluding with a long, controlled finish. Somewhat reminiscent of the estate's successful 2006, it's a blend of 52.3% Merlot, 38.6% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9.1% Cabernet Franc.

The 2023 Haut-Brion was picked at the same time as the La Mission Haut-Brion, albeit the secateurs sheathed one day later, on October 6. The nose is less immediate than the La Mission and the fruit is a little darker: blackcurrant, juniper, hints of black olive and a light cedar scent. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grip and tension. This has superb energy, presenting a crescendo of flavors toward a complex and persistent finish that lingers in the mouth. There is real pedigree to this First Growth, and it will certainly give 30 to 40 years of drinking pleasure.

Jean-Philippe Delmas ushered me to a private room for a tasting of their 2023s, although I did not taste Quintus. “We are moving towards more elegance,” he told me when I asked whether he is changing the winemaking. “The temperature for the alcoholic fermentation is now 27°C. We just did a green harvest for the Merlot that was also saignée [bleeding of the vats] as the yields were a little high. There is 14.5% alcohol for the Grand Vin with a pH of 3.7, a little lower than last year, and there is the highest IPT for Haut-Brion since 2010. The 2023 has the freshness of the 2021 but with more concentration.” As my tasting notes state, I thought there was a tangible gap between the La Mission Haut-Brion and Haut-Brion this vintage, but readers should be aware that this can always be closed as the wines mature. It will be interesting to observe their progress.
