Winery Château Figeac
Château Figeac is one of the most iconic wineries of Saint-Émilion and was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé A in 2022, the highest classification of the appellation. The estate is situated on an exceptional terroir on the western edge of Saint-Émilion, where gravelly soils are strongly reminiscent of the famous terroirs of the Médoc.
This unique terroir also explains the special blend of Figeac. Unlike many other Saint-Émilion wines, Cabernet plays a major role here. Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon form an important part of the blend and give the wine structure, aromatic complexity, and great aging potential.
Since 2013, Frédéric Faye has been at the helm as director of the château. Under his leadership, precision in the vineyard and cellar has been further refined. The harvest takes place plot by plot, sometimes spread over several weeks, ensuring that every grape is picked at the perfect moment. Thanks to a new, modern cellar, all plots can be vinified separately, further enhancing the precision of the final blend.
2023 Château Figeac
The 2023 Château Figeac is one of the absolute top wines of the vintage in Bordeaux. The wine combines concentration and power with striking freshness and precision. The blend consists of 41% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Franc, and 27% Cabernet Sauvignon , a classic blend that perfectly reflects the character of the terroir.
The harvest took place in multiple phases to ensure optimal ripeness. The Merlot was picked between September 6 and 15, followed by a short break before the Cabernet grapes were harvested between September 27 and October 5. This slow and precise approach results in a wine with exceptional balance and aromatic depth.
Terroir and style
The vineyards of Figeac cover approximately 41 hectares and are situated on deep gravel soils that provide excellent drainage and heat retention. This terroir is particularly well-suited for Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc and gives the wine its typical structure and aromatic complexity.
Figeac's style is classic yet refined: powerful structure combined with elegance, freshness, and distinct minerality. In recent vintages, the wine has become slightly more accessible without losing its characteristic precision and aging potential.
Color, smell and taste
Deep ruby red in color. On the nose, complex aromas of cassis, mulberry, and blackcurrant, complemented by floral notes of iris, tobacco, pencil shavings, and subtle spices.
On the palate, rich and layered with a powerful core of dark fruit. Fine, powdery tannins and lively acidity give the wine structure and tension. The finish is long, mineral, and exceptionally refined with notes of spices, graphite, and dark berries.
Reviews

“A brilliant classic in the making… aromas of cassis and mulberry with iris, cigar wrapper, pencil shavings and spice. Rich, layered and concentrated with powdery tannins and lively acids.”
100 points – Vinous (Antonio Galloni)
“The 2023 Figeac is outrageously great… dark, layered and explosive with mind-blowing intensity and pure power. One of the finest wines ever made here.”
Storage potential
Château Figeac is known for its impressive aging potential, and the 2023 is no exception. Thanks to the combination of Cabernet structure, fresh acidity, and deep fruit concentration, this wine can develop for many decades to come. The optimal drinking period begins around 2033 and can extend well beyond 2070.

A brilliant classic in the making, the 2023 Figeac unwinds in the glass with aromas of cassis and mulberry mingled with notions of iris, cigar wrapper, pencil shavings, burning embers and spices. Medium to full-bodied, rich and layered, it's deep and concentrated, with an enveloping core of fruit that's framed by powdery tannins and lively acids, concluding with a broad, atypically mineral finish. It's a blend of 41% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Franc and 27% Cabernet Sauvignon that attained 13.5% alcohol.
Director of Château Figeac since 2013, Frédéric Faye emphasizes precision and timing when he characterizes the estate's evolution over the last decade. Harvest now lasts three or four weeks, stopping and starting, so each parcel of this 41-hectare vineyard can be picked at optimal maturity; and that was the case a fortiori in 2023, with picking beginning with Merlot between September 6 and 15, stopping for 12 days, and then concluding with Cabernet between September 27 and October 5. Farming is similarly adapted parcel by parcel, with year-round cover crops and cultivation by horse to minimize soil compaction. And a brand-new winery triples the team's working space, with small tanks so that each parcel can be vinified separately. Yet the objective is to perfect Figeac, not to change it. If the estate's wines are now suppler and fuller, their classically Cabernet-rich assemblage hasn't altered. Old-fashioned approaches such as submerged-cap fermentation for fruit growing on gravel soils have been retained. And of course, the estate's distinctive and complex terroir hasn't changed. Faye handled Cabernet Sauvignon especially gently in 2023, as the berries were small and concentrated.

The density and finesse to this is terrific, offering blackberry, dark chocolate, walnut and hazelnut, as well as currant and sandalwood. Orange peel, too. Full-bodied and compact with a superb core of thick, velvet-textured tannins and a juicy finish. Extremely long. 41% merlot, 32% cabernet franc and 27% cabernet sauvignon.

From: 2023 Bordeaux: Signed, Sealed, Delivered (Mar 2026)
The 2023 Figeac is outrageously great. Dark, layered and explosive in the glass, the 2023 possesses mind-blowing intensity and pure power. Hints of lavender, crème de cassis, sage, menthol, spice box and pipe tobacco soar from the glass. Brisk acids and vibrant saline notes frame the close. All the elements are so artfully woven together. Absolutely nothing is out of place. Figeac is very clearly one of the wines of the vintage, The 2023 is also one of the finest wines ever made here. Merlots were picked starting September 6, while the Cabernets were harvested from September 26 to October 5, a very late finish. General Manager Frédéric Faye and his team turned out an extraordinary wine. Tasted two times.

Château Figeac is a renowned winery located in the Saint-Émilion appellation on the right bank of the Bordeaux wine region in France.
History of Château Figeac
Château Figeac has a long and rich history, dating back to the 2nd century, when it was originally a Roman villa. The estate has undergone several transformations over the centuries. In the 19th century, the estate came into the possession of the Manoncourt family, who played an important role in shaping its modern identity.
Vineyards and terroir of Château Figeac
The vineyards of Château Figeac cover approximately 40 hectares (approximately 99 acres) and are planted with mainly Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grape varieties. The estate is known for its unique terroir, characterized by a combination of gravel, limestone and clay soils. This terroir contributes to the distinctive qualities of the wines produced.
Wine production of Château Figeac
Château Figeac is known for its traditional winemaking practices, which include hand-harvesting the grapes and using a combination of stainless steel and wooden fermentation vats. The estate produces a Grand Vin, the flagship wine, as well as a second wine called "Petit Figeac". The Grand Vin is the flagship wine and is typically a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The exact blend may vary depending on the vintage. Petit Figeac is the second wine from Château Figeac, often made from younger vines or grapes that do not meet the criteria for Grand Vin. It provides a more accessible and approachable option at a younger age. Château Figeac has the status of Premier Grand Cru Classé (Class B) in the classification of Saint-Émilion wines. This classification recognizes the estate's consistent production of high quality wines. Château Figeac wines are highly regarded for their elegance, complexity and ability to age gracefully. They are often praised by wine critics and enthusiasts.
