Château Figeac - Petit-Figeac 2023
Petit-Figeac is always made exclusively from grapes harvested at Château-Figeac. Under the leadership of Frédéric Faye, this wine is produced with the same dedication and standards as the Grand Vin. It is not a wine from a single plot, but the result of a special selection, with a different blend every year. For 2023, the blend consists of 55% Merlot, 31% Cabernet Franc and 14% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine matures in 30% new French oak barrels.
Harvest and Vinification
Harvest dates: September 6 - October 5
The early bud formation of the Merlots in March, two weeks ahead of schedule, reflected the rising temperatures. The black frost of April 4 and 5 did not damage the buds at Figeac, thanks to an effective strategy and control methods. The homogeneous budding of the Cabernets Franc and Sauvignon started on April 4. Uniform vine growth and flowering in late May were aided by warmer and drier weather than the 30-year average. Rare rain showers caused rapid cluster closure, preserving harvest potential.
July brought a calm, dry and sunny period with the véraison of the Merlot beginning on July 11, followed by the Cabernets on August 1. A long campaign of green harvest allowed us to select the best grapes. High temperatures in August (>40°C for 3 days) alternated with scattered rain showers. Precise leaf thinning ensured a balance between freshness and optimal ripeness.
The harvest took place in two phases: first the Merlots from September 6 to 15, followed by the Cabernets from September 27 to October 5. The 12 day break between the Merlot and Cabernet harvest is one of the longest in the history of Château-Figeac. Although the Cabernets had already reached technical maturity, this break allowed for more complex phenolic and aromatic profiles, characteristic of Château-Figeac.
Tasting notes
The nose is refined, elegant and complex, with wonderful aromas of licorice and blackcurrant, as well as floral nuances of red roses and peonies. Furthermore, the wine reveals mineral notes of earth and roots, with hints of Virginia tobacco. On the palate the wine starts remarkably straightforward, then becomes full-bodied with controlled strength and a well-balanced extraction mid-palate. The delicious and tasty finish is supported by polished and precise tannins. Pastry, juicy and fruity notes (blue and black fruits) combine with cedar aromas, adding finesse and complexity.
Climate and Management
The year 2023 saw remarkably high annual rainfall, while the growing season was one of the driest in the past 20 years, with some heat waves. Despite the impression of a gloomy spring and summer, the growing season was one of the driest years in modern history. The summer saw high temperatures in August (>40°C for 3 days) and scattered rain showers. These conditions required meticulous care and management of the vineyards to maintain the balance between freshness and ripeness.
Conclusion
Petit-Figeac 2023 is a wine of great refinement and complexity, with a perfect balance between power, freshness and aromatic depth. This wine promises great storage potential and is an example of the craftsmanship and dedication of Château-Figeac. For lovers of Bordeaux wines, this is a wine to look forward to and cherish for years to come.

Château Figeac is a renowned winery located in the Saint-Émilion appellation on the right bank of the Bordeaux wine region in France.
History of Château Figeac
Château Figeac has a long and rich history, dating back to the 2nd century, when it was originally a Roman villa. The estate has undergone several transformations over the centuries. In the 19th century, the estate came into the possession of the Manoncourt family, who played an important role in shaping its modern identity.
Vineyards and terroir of Château Figeac
The vineyards of Château Figeac cover approximately 40 hectares (approximately 99 acres) and are planted with mainly Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grape varieties. The estate is known for its unique terroir, characterized by a combination of gravel, limestone and clay soils. This terroir contributes to the distinctive qualities of the wines produced.
Wine production of Château Figeac
Château Figeac is known for its traditional winemaking practices, which include hand-harvesting the grapes and using a combination of stainless steel and wooden fermentation vats. The estate produces a Grand Vin, the flagship wine, as well as a second wine called "Petit Figeac". The Grand Vin is the flagship wine and is typically a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The exact blend may vary depending on the vintage. Petit Figeac is the second wine from Château Figeac, often made from younger vines or grapes that do not meet the criteria for Grand Vin. It provides a more accessible and approachable option at a younger age. Château Figeac has the status of Premier Grand Cru Classé (Class B) in the classification of Saint-Émilion wines. This classification recognizes the estate's consistent production of high quality wines. Château Figeac wines are highly regarded for their elegance, complexity and ability to age gracefully. They are often praised by wine critics and enthusiasts.
