Winery Château d'Yquem
Château d'Yquem is undoubtedly the most famous sweet wine estate in the world. Located in the heart of Sauternes, it is the only château to receive the unique status of Premier Cru Supérieur in the 1855 classification. This exceptional rank was awarded exclusively to Yquem for the unparalleled quality and consistency of its wines.
The vineyards are situated on exceptional terroirs with gravelly soils on limestone and clay, perfectly suited for the development of Botrytis cinerea , also known as noble rot. This natural fungus concentrates sugars, aromas , and acidity in the grapes. Thanks to an extremely rigorous selection process, with grapes often harvested by hand in multiple passes, a wine is created that is considered the ultimate expression of Sauternes worldwide.
2023 Château d'Yquem
The 2023 vintage is one of Château d'Yquem's great modern vintages. With approximately 153-154 grams of residual sugar per liter, this wine is among the most concentrated vintages in the château's history. At the same time, the wine remains remarkably fresh and precise thanks to a perfect balance between ripeness and acidity.
The blend consists of 70% Sémillon and 30% Sauvignon Blanc. Harvest took place between September 14th and October 11th, with the grapes hand-picked multiple times to select only perfectly botrytis- affected berries. The result is a wine of enormous concentration, yet also exceptional elegance and energy.
An exceptional vintage
According to the château itself, 2023 represents the culmination of an impressive trilogy of vintages. The wine combines the crystalline freshness of 2021 with the sunny vigor of 2022, resulting in a perfectly balanced vintage. The bouquet displays enormous purity and intensity with notes of citrus, flowers, honey, and beeswax. On the palate, the wine is both velvety and powerful, with layers of apricot, mandarin marmalade, and exotic fruit that culminate in an exceptionally long finish.
Color, smell and taste
Radiant golden yellow in color. The nose offers intense aromas of pineapple, mango, guava, and candied citrus, complemented by honey, saffron, beeswax, and subtle spices.
Full-bodied, rich, and concentrated on the palate, yet remarkably refined. The fruit forms a powerful core supported by vibrant acidity and an almost crystalline texture. The wine displays enormous depth with layers of exotic fruit, citrus, honey, and delicate spice. The finish is almost endless, remaining elegant and ethereal. This is a half bottle of 0.375 liters.
A wine for decades
Great vintages of Château d'Yquem are known for their exceptional aging potential , and the 2023 is no exception. The wine can be enjoyed relatively young thanks to its striking balance, but will continue to develop and gain complexity over decades.

With 153 grams per liter of residual sugar—placing it among the 10 most concentrated vintages in the château’s history—the 2023 d'Yquem ranks among the finest wines bottled here under Lorenzo Pasquini’s direction. It unfurls from the glass with a complex, vibrant and remarkably pure bouquet of pineapple, guava, mango, confit citrus, beeswax and spices. Full-bodied, dense and concentrated, it combines formidable depth with perfectly judged control, built around a fleshy core of fruit, framed by lively acidity and a crystalline texture and culminating in an endless, refined and ethereal finish. Yquem’s natural power is here masterfully harnessed by the vintage’s freshness and tension, revealing an aesthetic of precision and vibrancy encountered only in the estate’s greatest years—made all the more remarkable by the fact that the château now achieves even higher levels of concentration than a decade ago, without any perceptible increase in sweetness on the palate.

Perfect aromas carry through to every milliliter of this wine, showing intense orange peel, honey, butterscotch, saffron, smoke and peat, with hints of coffee and dried apples. Full-bodied but weightless and silky, with an excellent balance of fruit, sweetness and spices. Some peanut brittle, dried oranges and lemons at the end. I can’t get over how wonderful this is now, but it can age forever. 154 g/L residual sugar. Drink or hold.

From: Cellar Favorite: 2023 Yquem & Y de Yquem (Mar 2026)
The 2023 Yquem, a blend of 70% Sémillon and 30% Sauvignon Blanc, contains 154 grams per litre of residual sugar—less than the 2022. As usual, the 2023 was matured in 100% new oak, mainly French, with a small percentage from Austria. The nose is so seductive that it should come with a warning sticker. Pure and mellow, it offers beguiling scents of wild honey, quince jelly, almond shavings and that signature hint of saffron destined to accentuate with age. It displays wonderful definition, though it does not have the “aromatic drama” of the previous vintage. The palate has exquisite balance and poise that belies the depth of this Yquem, though it is less exuberant, less ostentatious than the 2022. It is really the umami sensation that defines the 2023, how it caresses, almost soothes the grateful taste buds, vanilla and flecks of white chocolate lingering on the aftertaste. This will probably drink a little sooner than the 2022. If the 2023 does have a fault, it’s that it is so flattering in its flush of youth that it will be difficult to resist. Sublime.

Château d’Yquem is a name you’ll often hear when people talk about Sauternes. The castle has stood for centuries, but the wines still surprise. Sweet powerhouses that can easily outlive a generation.
Château d’Yquem winery in Sauternes
The estate lies in the heart of Sauternes, just south of Bordeaux. On a hilltop, overlooking the vineyards, with a castle that looks as striking as the wines taste. In total, the property covers around 125 hectares. About 90 hectares are dedicated to vines, while the rest is woodland, gardens, and a courtyard with its iconic towers.
History of Château d’Yquem
The story of Yquem goes back to the 15th century. In 1785, the estate came into the hands of the Lur-Saluces family through marriage. For generations it remained under their care until luxury group LVMH acquired the majority stake in 1996. The estate’s reputation was sealed in 1855 when Yquem was the only Sauternes classified as Premier Cru Supérieur — a title it still holds exclusively today.
Vineyards and grape varieties of d’Yquem
Yquem’s vineyards cover around 102 hectares. Plantings are roughly 80% Sémillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc. This blend is key to the wine’s rich, layered style. Harvesting here is unlike anywhere else: only grapes touched by noble rot (Botrytis cinerea) are handpicked. Pickers often pass through the same rows multiple times to select just the right clusters. The yields are tiny, averaging only 9 hectoliters per hectare, but the concentration in the wine is unmatched.
Climate in Sauternes
The microclimate of Sauternes is essential. Nearby rivers create morning mists in autumn, while afternoons are warm and sunny. These alternating conditions allow noble rot to develop. Without this natural balance of humidity and sunshine, the unique style of Yquem would not exist.
Interesting facts about Château d’Yquem
- Yquem is the only Sauternes with Premier Cru Supérieur status from the 1855 classification.
- Since 1959 the estate has also produced a dry white wine: “Y” or “Ygrec”. Since 2004 it has been made every vintage.
- The harvest is so selective that up to 140 pickers are needed to comb through the vineyards in several passes.
- A bottle of Yquem can age for more than a century under proper storage, constantly evolving in complexity.
