Unlike the other famous Bordeaux châteaux, Château d'Yquem mainly produces white wines. Château d'Yquem was the only one to receive the Premier Cru Supérieur rating. Until 1959, Château d'Yquem only made sweet white wine. Since 1959, 'Y' or 'Ygrec' has also been available on an irregular basis as dry white wine. Château d'Yquem dates from the 15th century and the Renaissance. Château d'Yquem sits at the top of a small hill with an enclosed courtyard and turrets. The wine estate of Château d'Yquem, located in Sauternes, covers 125 hectares of which 90 hectares are used for production.
