Description
Château d'Yquem makes the best Sauternes. Spring 2021 tested winegrowers by confronting all the risks inherent in viticulture: frost, hail and mildew. Fortunately, Yquem is unique and its geographical location has helped preserve its great terroirs. From June to September, the grapes benefited from coolness and moderate drought periods, giving the wines excellent acidity. Then the Botrytis miracle came into the picture! Two rain showers in mid-September and early October promoted the spread of noble rot in the vineyards, while a beautiful three-week period of fine weather followed by cool, dry and sunny conditions resulted in concentrated noble rot of the grapes. This optimal weather allowed the harvest to unfold in complete peace, in three successive passes, between September 30 and October 30. The full aromatic profile of Botrytis cinerea was thus revealed in what can be described as an incredibly pure vintage.
Château d'Yquem 2021 shows mixed almond notes on the nose with refreshing hints of cedarwood, pineapple, pear, plum and mandarin orange. Aromas of candied orange and lemon gradually emerge to the foreground, supported by intense floral notes of gardenia and broom
flowers. Château d'Yquem 2021 is very lively on the palate. It starts fresh then becomes rich and concentrated in the middle of the mouth, providing a perfect finish and balanced wine with incredible finesse. The powerful structure is extended by a hint of candied bitterness, leading to a long, soft aftertaste finish.

The 2021 d'Yquem exhibits a complex bouquet of rose, exotic fruits and mandarin orange mingled with spring flowers, rose and crème brûlée, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and seamless palate that's suave and layered, with a deep core and a long finish that's lent definition by delicate bitterness that offsets the 148 grams per liter residual sugar. This blend of 65% Sémillon and 35% Sauvignon Blanc was matured, as usual, in all new barrels, but the new oak is perfectly integrated and barely noticeable.

From: 2+2=5: Bordeaux 2021 In Bottle (Feb 2024)
The 2021 Yquem was tasted in Amsterdam, the first wine poured at a lunch, thereby allowing me a longer period to examine it. Slightly burnished in hue, it has a very attractive bouquet with scents of dried quince, clementine, linseed and subtle candle wax, perhaps more discrete than usual, but certainly fresh and vibrant. The palate is medium-bodied and viscous on the entry, a Yquem with perhaps a lighter chassis than recent vintages, prioritizing poise and purity over horsepower— exactly the right approach in such a challenging season. It opens wonderfully in the glass, gaining more frangipane and kaki fruit scents, though it seems to have a lighter and more tensile finish than the 2020 or 2019. As such, I suspect that it will be comparatively approachable and, of course, delicious. Readers should note that I will probably re-taste the 2021 in Bordeaux during primeur.

Château d’Yquem is a name you’ll often hear when people talk about Sauternes. The castle has stood for centuries, but the wines still surprise. Sweet powerhouses that can easily outlive a generation.
Château d’Yquem winery in Sauternes
The estate lies in the heart of Sauternes, just south of Bordeaux. On a hilltop, overlooking the vineyards, with a castle that looks as striking as the wines taste. In total, the property covers around 125 hectares. About 90 hectares are dedicated to vines, while the rest is woodland, gardens, and a courtyard with its iconic towers.
History of Château d’Yquem
The story of Yquem goes back to the 15th century. In 1785, the estate came into the hands of the Lur-Saluces family through marriage. For generations it remained under their care until luxury group LVMH acquired the majority stake in 1996. The estate’s reputation was sealed in 1855 when Yquem was the only Sauternes classified as Premier Cru Supérieur — a title it still holds exclusively today.
Vineyards and grape varieties of d’Yquem
Yquem’s vineyards cover around 102 hectares. Plantings are roughly 80% Sémillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc. This blend is key to the wine’s rich, layered style. Harvesting here is unlike anywhere else: only grapes touched by noble rot (Botrytis cinerea) are handpicked. Pickers often pass through the same rows multiple times to select just the right clusters. The yields are tiny, averaging only 9 hectoliters per hectare, but the concentration in the wine is unmatched.
Climate in Sauternes
The microclimate of Sauternes is essential. Nearby rivers create morning mists in autumn, while afternoons are warm and sunny. These alternating conditions allow noble rot to develop. Without this natural balance of humidity and sunshine, the unique style of Yquem would not exist.
Interesting facts about Château d’Yquem
- Yquem is the only Sauternes with Premier Cru Supérieur status from the 1855 classification.
- Since 1959 the estate has also produced a dry white wine: “Y” or “Ygrec”. Since 2004 it has been made every vintage.
- The harvest is so selective that up to 140 pickers are needed to comb through the vineyards in several passes.
- A bottle of Yquem can age for more than a century under proper storage, constantly evolving in complexity.
