Description
Château Brane-Cantenac Winery
Château Brane-Cantenac is a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé from Margaux and has been run by Henri Lurton since 1992. The estate boasts vineyards on the renowned Brane plateau, known for its deep, gravelly soils with excellent drainage. The estate's style focuses on precision, elegance, and terroir expression, with Cabernet Sauvignon as its backbone. In the vineyard, careful attention is paid to low yields and strict selection. In the cellar, a conscious choice is made for classic vinification with complete malolactic fermentation in barrel for the Grand Vin. More information about this winery can be found under the "Winery" tab.
Region and terroir
Brane-Cantenac lies in the heart of the Margaux region and benefits from one of the appellation's finest gravelly plateaus. These soils naturally restrict growth, producing wines with finesse, aromatic refinement, and characteristic tension. Through replanting and grafting Merlot to Cabernet Sauvignon, the estate can now create a blend entirely from the best parts of the plateau, adding depth and volume to the mid-palate.
Vineyards and grape varieties
The 2023 vintage is composed of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc, 1% Carmenère, and 1% Petit Verdot. The relatively high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon underscores the estate's classic Margaux identity. In 2023, fruit set was abundant, prompting rigorous thinning to maintain concentration and balance. Some Merlot was saignée, adding structure and intensity to the final blend.
Harvest, vinification and maturation
Malolactic fermentation took place entirely in barriques, as has been the practice at Brane-Cantenac since the 1990s. Maturation for the Grand Vin takes place in 100% new oak barrels. This choice lends a creamy texture and a subtle lactic note in its youth, without sacrificing the precision of the fruit. The combination of high natural tannins in 2023 and full oak aging results in a wine with substantial structure and ageing potential.
Color, smell and taste
The 2023 displays a deep ruby red color with purple reflections. The nose opens with dark cherries, cassis, and ripe berries, followed by nuances of spices, dried herbs, and a subtle floral note of crushed flowers. The new oak is subtly integrated and gives a creamy impression without being overpowering.
On the palate, this Margaux combines richness with elegance. The mid-palate is fleshy and layered, with a core of dark red fruit, light vanilla notes, and a hint of blackcurrant. The tannins are pronounced and extend powerfully throughout the wine, yet remain fine-grained and precise. There is tension and energy, carried by fresh acidity, while the finish is long, structured, and slightly creamy. The balance between power and refinement gives the wine both immediate appeal and clear aging potential.
Drinking window and development
The professional ratings show different drinking windows. William Kelley of The Wine Advocate rated the wine 93-95 points. Antonio Galloni of Vinous gave it 94-96 points with an expected drinking window of 2033 to 2063. James Suckling rated the wine 97 points and recommends drinking from 2028 onwards. The wine clearly needs several years of bottle aging to reach its full potential and will then continue to develop for decades.
Summary of professional reviews
The 2023 Brane-Cantenac is unanimously considered one of the stronger wines of the year in Margaux, with scores reaching 97 points. The wine is praised for its combination of elegance and structure, its refined tannins, and the perfect integration of 100% new oak. It is described as a sensual, silky Margaux with depth, energy, and exceptional length. The full review texts can be found in the Professional Reviews tab.

The 2023 Brane-Cantenac is a blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot (which saw some saignée), 1% Cabernet Franc, 1% Carmenère and 1% Petit Verdot, and it completed its malolactic fermentation in barrels as has been the rule at this estate since the 1990s. Offering up aromas of dark cherries, cassis and spices framed by creamy new oak, it's medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy, with a creamy core of fruit and a long, gently lactic finish.
Having grafted over Merlot vines to Cabernet Sauvignon, Henri Lurton and his team are now able to craft a balanced blend derived solely from the plateau of Brane, the estate's finest terroir, and that has brought more mid-palate depth and volume to the wines. The 2023 vintage delivered an abundant fruit set, so the team conducted extensive crop-thinning to balance the vines. The resulting wines are quite serious, with analytically high levels of tannin, though the estate's use of 100% new oak, with malolactic in barrique, for the grand vin has contributed some youthful creaminess out of the gates, even if I sometimes think that comes at the expense of a little precision.

This is really structured, with intense tannins that run the length of the wine and give it verve and vibe. Medium-bodied with lovely berry, light vanilla and currant flavors. The tannins are exceptional. This is a very structured Margaux that needs three or four years to come around. Best after 2028.

From: Bordeaux at the Crossroads: 2023 En Primeur (April 2024)
The 2023 Brane-Cantenac is a sensual, silky wine. There's plenty of depth and structure behind that, but the first impression is most definitely one of elegance. Crushed flowers, spice and dried herbs meld into a core of super-expressive, dark, red-toned fruit. The 100% new oak is impeccably balanced within the wine’s frame. Brane-Cantenac remains one of the best relative values in Bordeaux, or anywhere, for that matter. This is a fine effort from proprietor Henri Lurton and his team. Tasted two times.

Château Brane-Cantenac - elegant wines from the Bordeaux
Château Brane-Cantenac is located in the world-famous Bordeaux wine region, in the heart of the famous Margaux appellation. The Château exudes pride and allure, and the winery is known for producing wines with remarkable elegance and finesse. In the world of fine wine, this beautiful estate is a true emblem of quality and excellence.
History
The history of this winery dates back to about 250 years ago where the legend of Brane-Cantenac is the story of a flourishing relationship between man and earth, which has grown stronger over the centuries. This great wine estate, called 'Hostein' in the 18th century, was bought by the Gorce family and produced one of the most famous wines of the Medoc long before the 1855 classification. The 2nd wine of this winery, the Baron de Brane, got its name as a tribute to the famous Baron Jacques-Maxime de Brane, the 'Napoléon des Vignes', who owned the estate in the 19th century. The Lurton family has been at the helm for the past 4 generations. All very dedicated owners who ensured that the vineyard continued to flourish, and still produce the highest quality wines. Since 1992, Henri Lurton has continued the journey started by his father and his ancestors. Although he favors innovation and new technology, Henri will never lose sight of the traditional values that are and remain inherent in Brane's identity. He is particularly proud of the unique terroir and recognizes the need to treat the soil, vines and grapes with immense respect while carefully controlling Brane's future course.
Terroir
Obtaining the best possible fruit requires a unique exchange between man and nature, based on a deep understanding of the land itself, and further developed through centuries of experience. Famous for its deep, gravel and mineral-rich soils, Brane-Cantenac has some of the most beautiful parts of Margaux. Set on an illustrious high plateau, the castle has stony bottoms that force the roots of the vines to dig deep into the earth for sustenance. All areas of the vineyards have different characteristics, making them best suited to certain grape varieties. Cabernet Sauvignon (55%), Merlot (40%), Cabernet Franc (4.5%) and Carmenère (0.5%) grapes are grown at Brane-Cantenac. The vineyards are continuously micro-managed with one goal in mind: obtaining grapes of the highest quality and maintaining low yields. Replanting efforts in recent years, and a move towards organic cultivation, demonstrate the strong commitment to sustainable viticulture by Château Brane-Cantenac.
Harvest
One of the most exciting and labor-intensive periods begins in mid-September. Where it is normally quiet and peaceful, a wave of activity ensues in September where everyone prepares to gather the fruits that have been carefully cherished all year round. Thorough scientific analysis and tasting of the grapes must take place before the decision to harvest is made. Picking can only take place when every grape has reached the perfect condition.

The 2023 displays a deep ruby red color with purple reflections. The new oak is subtly integrated and gives a creamy impression without being overpowering.
