Baron de Brane and the character of 2023

Baron de Brane is the second wine from Château Brane-Cantenac, a historic estate in Margaux known for its finesse, aromatic precision, and supple structure. This second wine offers much of the same elegance and aromatic clarity in a younger and more accessible style. Under the Winery tab, you'll find extensive background information about the estate and its developments in recent years.

The 2023 Baron de Brane beautifully demonstrates how the plateau's terroir, the finest part of the Brane vineyards, is increasingly coming into its own. The blend is composed of 48 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 43 percent Merlot, 7 percent Cabernet Franc, 1 percent Carmenère, and 1 percent Petit Verdot. Thanks to recent replanting, where portions of Merlot have been replaced with Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine has gained structure and depth without sacrificing any of its charm.

Vineyard and vinification of the 2023 Baron de Brane

The grapes for Baron de Brane come exclusively from the plateau, where the deep gravel soils ensure optimal drainage and an elegant, mineral expression. In 2023, the fruit set was abundant, necessitating strict selection and targeted thinning to maintain balance in the vines. These choices resulted in a wine with balanced concentration and ripeness.

The vinification focuses on freshness, precision, and a pleasant tannic structure. The fruit is vinified separately, after which the different varietals are carefully combined into a harmonious blend. While the estate's grand vin is aged entirely in new oak, Baron de Brane uses a more subtle oak application to preserve the fresh fruit and direct charm.

Colour, aroma and taste of the 2023 Baron de Brane

The wine opens with aromas of blackcurrants, blackberries, and ripe cherries, complemented by notes of stone, cocoa powder, and a subtle mineral undertone. The nose is lively and bright, with both red and dark fruit notes.

On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, juicy, and supple, with a fine balance between fresh acidity and soft tannins. There's a crisp, energetic tension in the fruit, immediately inviting you to sip again. The mouthfeel is refined and slightly creamy, with a fresh, spicy note of spices and a mineral echo that extends the finish.

What's striking is the combination of charm, accessibility, and unexpected depth. The recent focus on Cabernet Sauvignon on the plateau gives the wine more mid-structure, while the Merlot adds roundness and generous fruit. The result is a particularly successful Baron de Brane: lively, balanced, and immediately enjoyable.

Storage potential and drinking advice

The 2023 Baron de Brane is appealing even when young, thanks to its expressive fruit and soft structure. Yet it offers sufficient freshness and grip to further develop over the next five to ten years. In the early years, the crunchy fruit will take center stage, while with bottle aging, more rounded notes of cocoa, spices, and soft wood influences will emerge.
