Persoonlijke gegevens
Brane Cantenac's roots can be traced back to the early 18th century. At that time, it was owned by the Gorce family and known as Château Gorce (and for a time as Château Gorce Guy). Henri Lurton has been managing director of this château since 1992, which has been in the Lurton family's hands since 1925. The excellent quality of the terroir, inextricably linked to the owner's perfectionism, ensures that this wine is truly stunning. One of the finest Médoc wines with a guaranteed, stable value. Today, the château comprises 90 hectares of vineyards in the Margaux appellation. The largest vineyard, 45 hectares, is located next to the château on the Brane plateau. The second vineyard (22 hectares) is located further north near Soussans. The remaining vineyards are located further south near Arsac. The terroir consists primarily of gravel, but also, to a lesser extent, sand and clay. This Margaux is made with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. Baron de Brane is the second wine from Château Brane Cantenac.
The 2022 Margaux from Brane Cantenac is a blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc, Carmenère, and Petit Verdot. It boasts stunning elegance and displays subtle notes of tobacco and beautiful red fruit. The wine is refined and medium to full-bodied on the palate, with a lovely concentration of fruit and acidity. Brane Cantenac has a complex, opulent personality with strikingly beautiful, velvety tannins and a very attractive drinking window.

A blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and the balance Cabernet Franc, Carmenère and Petit Verdot, the 2022 Brane-Cantenac unwinds in the glass with aromas of dark berries, crème de cassis, black truffles, loamy soil, burning embers and violets. Medium to full-bodied, deep and velvety, with a fleshy core of fruit, terrific concentration and lively acids, it concludes with a long, perfumed finish. This is a terrific 2022 that may rival or even surpass the 2019 if it realizes all its potential in bottle.

A long and very linear red for Margaux with intense freshness and energy. The cabernet sauvignon shows real clarity with blackcurrants and flowers. Crushed stone. Firm and racy with lots of lemon rind and intensity. 74% cabernet sauvignon, 23% merlot, 1% cabernet franc, 1% petit verdot and 1% carmenere.

From: You’re Unbelievable: Bordeaux 2022 (May 2023)
The 2022 Brane-Cantenac, as usual, is a wine that you must sit and contemplate before words gush forth. It was picked from 7 September to 10 October (their tiny plot of Carmenère) at 31.5hL/ha and contains 16% vin de presse from the Cabernet Sauvignon. It is well-defined and fresh, a very subtle Margaux, precise with blackberry, wild strawberry, cedar and tobacco scents. As previous vintages have proven, there's a kind of "hidden depth" that will become apparent post-bottling. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, very elegant and unashamedly classic in style. This is blessed with haunting poise, composed and detailed on the finish. This Margaux is not a show stopper, which in any case, is not really Henri Lurton/Brane Cantenac’s signature style. Instead, it is a wine that 15 to 20 years down the road, you are going to treasure.

From: 2022 Bordeaux En Primeur: Balance Imbalance (May 2023)
The 2022 Brane-Cantenac is captivating. Aromatic, savory and layered, the 2022 is so alluring from the outset. The natural radiance of the year is very much on display, and yet there is nothing that is overdone about the 2022. Hints of blood orange, spice, rose petal and minerals open over time, offering stunning contrast to the sheer intensity of the fruit shaped by low yields and tiny berries. Brane-Cantenac is, in my view, one of the most under-the-radar wines on the Left Bank. The 2022 is a stunner.

Château Brane-Cantenac - elegant wines from the Bordeaux
Château Brane-Cantenac is located in the world-famous Bordeaux wine region, in the heart of the famous Margaux appellation. The Château exudes pride and allure, and the winery is known for producing wines with remarkable elegance and finesse. In the world of fine wine, this beautiful estate is a true emblem of quality and excellence.
History
The history of this winery dates back to about 250 years ago where the legend of Brane-Cantenac is the story of a flourishing relationship between man and earth, which has grown stronger over the centuries. This great wine estate, called 'Hostein' in the 18th century, was bought by the Gorce family and produced one of the most famous wines of the Medoc long before the 1855 classification. The 2nd wine of this winery, the Baron de Brane, got its name as a tribute to the famous Baron Jacques-Maxime de Brane, the 'Napoléon des Vignes', who owned the estate in the 19th century. The Lurton family has been at the helm for the past 4 generations. All very dedicated owners who ensured that the vineyard continued to flourish, and still produce the highest quality wines. Since 1992, Henri Lurton has continued the journey started by his father and his ancestors. Although he favors innovation and new technology, Henri will never lose sight of the traditional values that are and remain inherent in Brane's identity. He is particularly proud of the unique terroir and recognizes the need to treat the soil, vines and grapes with immense respect while carefully controlling Brane's future course.
Terroir
Obtaining the best possible fruit requires a unique exchange between man and nature, based on a deep understanding of the land itself, and further developed through centuries of experience. Famous for its deep, gravel and mineral-rich soils, Brane-Cantenac has some of the most beautiful parts of Margaux. Set on an illustrious high plateau, the castle has stony bottoms that force the roots of the vines to dig deep into the earth for sustenance. All areas of the vineyards have different characteristics, making them best suited to certain grape varieties. Cabernet Sauvignon (55%), Merlot (40%), Cabernet Franc (4.5%) and Carmenère (0.5%) grapes are grown at Brane-Cantenac. The vineyards are continuously micro-managed with one goal in mind: obtaining grapes of the highest quality and maintaining low yields. Replanting efforts in recent years, and a move towards organic cultivation, demonstrate the strong commitment to sustainable viticulture by Château Brane-Cantenac.
Harvest
One of the most exciting and labor-intensive periods begins in mid-September. Where it is normally quiet and peaceful, a wave of activity ensues in September where everyone prepares to gather the fruits that have been carefully cherished all year round. Thorough scientific analysis and tasting of the grapes must take place before the decision to harvest is made. Picking can only take place when every grape has reached the perfect condition.
