Description
Winery Château Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse)
Château Beauséjour Duffau Lagarrosse is situated on one of Saint-Émilion's most renowned limestone slopes. Since Joséphine Duffau Lagarrosse took charge, the estate's focus has been on precision, terroir expression, and refinement. With a strong focus on vineyard work, gentle extraction, and careful use of oak, the château has quickly repositioned itself as one of the appellation's most promising establishments.
More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Region, climate and location
The château is situated on the chalky plateau and slopes of Saint-Émilion, where pure limestone and clay create tension, vertical structure, and a pronounced minerality. The 2023 vintage enjoyed a long growing season with a staggered harvest, resulting in optimal ripeness and preservation of freshness. The grapes were harvested between September 13th and October 3rd.
Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) is the château's Grand Vin and represents the most precise selection of plots and grapes. Produced in very limited quantities, it is considered the purest expression of this historic terroir.
Vineyards and grape varieties
The 2023 blend consists of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc. The grapes come from old vines on chalky soils, which contributes to tension, aromatic finesse, and length. The relatively high use of Cabernet Franc enhances the wine's freshness and vertical character.
Harvest, vinification and maturation
The harvest took place over several days to determine the optimal ripening point for each plot. In the cellar, the emphasis is on gentle extraction and precision. For aging, carefully selected barrels are used, including oak from Burgundian coopers such as Cadus. This approach results in better integration of the oak and refined tannin structure, even at an early stage.
Color, smell and taste
The wine displays a deep ruby red color with purple highlights. The nose opens with aromas of black raspberry, mulberry, and violet, followed by spice, incense, and a distinct mineral undertone. William Kelley of The Wine Advocate emphasizes the purity of the fruit and the seamless integration of oak.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a deep, layered structure and a remarkably silky texture. Ripe acidity provides tension and length, while the tannins are refined and polished. Falstaff highlights the juiciness, finesse, and chalky finish, in which cherry and berry notes subtly linger. The finish is long, mineral, and slightly balsamic.
Development and drinking window
The structure, freshness, and concentration point to longevity. The high ratings suggest a wine that will develop beautifully from the end of the decade onward and can easily age for several decades.
Summary of professional reviews
William Kelley of The Wine Advocate rates the 2023 Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) 96–98 points, calling it the most impressive vintage yet under Joséphine Duffau Lagarrosse's guidance, with exceptional purity, precision, and minerality. Falstaff awards 97–100 points, highlighting the wine's finesse, juiciness, and chalky length.

Parker
Wine Advocate 96-98/100 : “Joséphine Duffau Lagarrosse's third vintage at this terrific hillside terroir is her most impressive to date. The 2023 Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) offers up aromas of black raspberries, mulberries, violets, spices and incense, followed by a medium to full-bodied, deep and layered palate that's seamless, suave and concentrated, with lively acids, beautiful purity of fruit and a long, mineral, gently balsamic finish. It's a blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc, picked on nine days between September 13 and October 3. Duffau Lagarrosse's work on oak selection (she favors Burgundy's cooperage Cadus, among others) has delivered much more seamless integration at this early stage, and her attentive approach to extraction is already bearing fruit in the form of tannins that are more polished and refined than was formerly the case at this address. It's a brilliant effort from a property with almost limitless potential”.

Winemaking and terroir speak at the same volume in this red. Aromas of chalk, warm toast, blackberries, graphite, chocolate and pepper. Almost full-bodied, but nothing heavy. Tight tannins, chalky vibrations and a touch of wood firmness. A bit early now. Drink from 2028.

From: You’re Unbelievable: Bordeaux 2022 (May 2023)
The 2022 Beauséjour Héritiers Duffau-Lagarrosse was picked on 6-9 September for the Merlot and 23 for the Cabernet Franc, representing the highest percentage to date. It was cropped at 42hL/ha with 14.9% alcohol and a pH of 3.5. Aged in 68% new oak, it has a delicate nose that completely disguises that summer's warmth. Precise redcurrant and raspberry fruit aromas are laced with minerals. The limestone soils percolate and evince the estate's style under Joséphine Duffau Lagarrosse. It seems to deepen, to "stretch out" with aeration, manifesting more darker fruit. The palate is medium-bodied, mineral-driven and almost pastille-like in terms of purity with its mélange of red and blue fruit and granular texture. Background notes of tobacco and black truffle begin to surface with time. There's just a trace of white pepper on the finish. Precise, focused and with plenty of substance, this is a characterful and intellectually satisfying Duffau. Most importantly, not only will it be flippin' delicious, but you get the sense that Joséphine is only just getting started.

Falstaff 97-100/100 : “Dark ruby, purple reflections, subtle brightening on the edge. Dark minerality, pleasant savouriness, blackberries, liquorice, orange zest, floral touch. Juicy, silky and complex, delicate fruit expression, full of finesse, ripe tannins, ripe cherries and currants in the aftertaste, a guarantee for great drinking pleasure, chalky and long on the palate”.

Wijnhuis
Château Beauséjour was founded in the 19th century and has a long tradition in wine growing. The winery was purchased in 1847 by Pierre-Paulin Ducarpe, who later left it to his cousin, Mr. Duffau-Lagarrosse. Hence the double name Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse).
Location: The winery is located on the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion, a region known for its excellent wine-growing terroir. The winery overlooks the picturesque town of Saint-Émilion, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Château Beauséjour covers approximately 6.5 hectares of vineyards. The vineyards are planted with classic Bordeaux grape varieties, mainly Merlot (approximately 81%), followed by Cabernet Franc (16%) and a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon (3%). The vineyards are located on limestone and clay soils, which are ideal for the production of powerful and complex wines. The unique terroir contributes to the minerality and depth of the wine
