Origin and terroir of Saint-Péray Les Potiers

Situated on the southern border of the Northern Rhône, Saint-Péray is a small but historic appellation dedicated to white wines from Marsanne and Roussanne. “Les Potiers” is a specific cuvée from Yves Cuilleron from vineyards with gravelly, alluvial soils. These light, well-drained soils produce refined wines with a characteristic tension and precision.

The location on south-west facing slopes offers an ideal microclimate, with plenty of sunlight and sufficient ventilation. The grapes benefit from a long growing season, which contributes to aromatic complexity and a natural balance between ripeness and freshness.

Marsanne and Roussanne in perfect balance

Les Potiers is an equal blend of Marsanne and Roussanne – two grapes that complement and enhance each other. Marsanne provides structure, body and subtle spiciness, while Roussanne brings finesse, floral notes and acidity. Together they produce a wine with a rich mouthfeel and refined aromas.

The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected. Vinification is spontaneous with indigenous yeasts, without the use of fining agents or technical interventions. Everything is aimed at the pure expression of the terroir and the grape variety.

Maturation and education

After fermentation, the wine matures for about nine months “sur lie” in a combination of large wooden barrels (foudres) and barriques. During this period, there is no stirring or clarification, so that the fine yeasts can do their work. This maturation gives the wine structure, softness and depth, without losing its freshness. The wood influence is subtle and fully integrated.

Color, smell and taste

The wine presents itself in the glass with a clear, light golden color with a subtle green hue. In the nose a fresh aromatic expression immediately comes forward: white flowers, ripe peach, mirabelle, citrus zest and a touch of wet stone. When swirling, more layers are released, such as almond, fennel seed and light honey.

In the mouth, Les Potiers is lively and tight, with a remarkable purity. The taste profile combines juicy white stone fruit with lime, a salty minerality and fine spiciness. The structure is full and slightly creamy, but always supported by fresh acidity. The finish is long, clean and delicately dry with a subtle bitter signature.

A wine with gastronomic allure

Yves Cuilleron's Saint-Péray “Les Potiers” is an elegant white wine with serious content. It can be used widely at the table, with both fish and poultry dishes, and is a stylish alternative to white Burgundy. Thanks to the natural balance between body and freshness, it can be drunk young or left to mature for a few years.

Yves Cuilleron represents the third generation of winemakers. Cave Cuilleron was founded in 1920. In 1987, the domain came into the hands of Yves through his grandfather and uncle. Together with François Villard, Yves Cuilleron is today one of the greatest talents in the northern Rhône. Wine Spectator calls him the leader of the new generation of winemakers in the Condrieu. Most of his vineyards are in and around Chavanay, just south of Condrieu. In total, it has 59 hectares divided between Saint Joseph (Blanc), Saint Joseph (Rouge), Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu.

Yves has an important slogan... picking grapes as ripe as possible! He is a gourmand who loves good food and 'Les Vins Gourmand'. You can also taste that in his wines. He makes his wines '100% maison'. For each plot or type of wine, he monitors the Cuilleron style of the relevant cuvée, without compromise. However, nothing is certain with him. He works on feeling, experience and continues to observe and adjust. He selects the fruit from the older and younger canes. He does the same with the different plots. He only blends different plots if there are enough synonyms or properties that complement each other.

In terms of winemaking, Yves goes his own way. He doesn't follow trends. He does not work conventionally, not organically and not biodynamically, but according to his own philosophy aimed at obtaining healthy grapes. He continuously observes in order to be able to intervene in time. He has been working sustainably for 20 years according to la lutte raisonnée; a sensible way of winemaking without pesticides and fertilizers. In the cellar he works with natural yeasts and prefers to use older casks and barriques instead of steel tanks.
