Description
about the Álvaro Palacios winery
Álvaro Palacios is considered one of Spain's most influential winemakers. Since 1989, he has been working in Gratallops (Priorat) to create wines that combine power, elegance, and pure terroir. His name is synonymous with precision and authenticity. La Baixada is one of Priorat's rare "Vinya Classificada" wines, an official classification comparable to a Grand Cru. Every detail in the vineyard and cellar is carried out by hand, from organic farming to meticulous vinification. The result is a wine that is as profound as it is refined.
vineyard and terroir
La Baixada is a 1.3-hectare vineyard on steep terraces in Gratallops, situated between 293 and 345 meters above sea level. The soil consists of the typical "llicorella" – a reddish slate with traces of iron, copper, and manganese hydroxides. This rock, formed in the Carboniferous period, produces a distinct mineral signature. The vineyard is organically farmed, with mule plowing and hand-tended vines. The east-facing exposure provides morning sun and cool air, slowing the ripening of the grapes. In 2023, rainfall was extremely low, only 250 mm per year, and Palacios decided to lightly irrigate the vineyard for the first time to protect the young vines.
grape varieties and yield
The wine is composed of 95% Garnacha and 5% Garnacha Blanca from 25-year-old bush vines. The yield was minimal, only 20.7 hectoliters per hectare. Due to limited rainfall, the berries were small and highly concentrated, with intense aromas and high extraction. Harvest took place on September 8 and 10, 2023. A total of only 3,460 bottles, 77 magnums, and 20 double magnums, were bottled in February 2025.
vinification and maturation
Fermentation occurred spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in wooden barrels, some containing whole bunches. The wine remained on the skins for 23 days, with gentle manual pigeage. Malolactic fermentation took place in oak. This was followed by 13 months of aging in oval French oak foudres, followed by 2 months in cement. The wine was neither fined nor filtered to preserve its natural structure. Alcohol: 14.4%, pH 3.47, total acidity 4.87 g/l.
color, smell and taste
In the glass, the wine displays a deep ruby red color. The aroma is intense and earthy, with notes of ripe cherries, blackberries, violets, lavender, and graphite. Behind the fruit, spicy and mineral layers emerge—slate, dried thyme, and subtle hints of cedar. On the palate, it is powerful yet polished and balanced. The structure is muscular, with fine, slightly dusty tannins and lively acidity. The finish is long and precise, with a salty note typical of the Priorat slate.
review by The Wine Advocate
The Wine Advocate (Luis Gutiérrez) awarded the 2023 La Baixada 96 points. He called it "a more polished palate with abundant, fine-grained, slightly dusty tannins… definitely an earthier wine." According to his report, this vintage showcases the deep, earthy side of Garnacha with an unparalleled balance of power, freshness, and elegance. He describes the 2023 as "pretty, ethereal, and approachable," with more color and energy thanks to the cool nights during the harvest. The wine combines intensity with refinement and, according to him, possesses everything that characterizes the great Priorat vintages. Recommended for drinking from 2026 to 2040.
style and storage potential
The 2023 La Baixada is a wine of concentration and focus. Despite its power, it remains light and precise. The combination of ripe fruit, fine tannins, and lively acidity gives it excellent aging potential. Álvaro Palacios recommends opening the wine only after several years of bottle aging. Keeping it until at least 2040 under ideal conditions will produce a wine of rare complexity and balance.

The 2023 La Baixada wine is from a "vinya classificada" (a classified vineyard), one of the official single-vineyard categories of the Priorat appellation, 1.3 hectares of organically farmed vines on slopes in the village of Gratallops at 293 to 345 meters above sea level, mostly Garnacha with 5% Garnacha Blanca. It fermented in oak vats with indigenous yeasts and matured in oval French oak foudres for 13 months, followed by a further two months in concrete. It was bottled with 14.4% alcohol, a pH of 3.47 and 4.87 grams of acidity. The sample that I tasted unbottled last year was darker and earthier; this has kept a deeper color and a powerful and earthy nose but a more polished palate with abundant, fine-grained, slightly dusty tannins. This is definitely an earthier wine. 3,460 bottles were filled in February 2025.
There were less than 250 liters of rain in Gratallops between November 2022 and October 2023, even less than in any of the previous five years. And in the spring, that is key, they only received 43 liters in four months. So, for the first time ever, Álvaro Palacios decided it was necessary to water the vines. But getting water was not easy. So, the grapes picked in 2023 were small and with concentrated juice. All in all, the harvest dates were more or less normal, finishing with l'Ermita the 11th of October.
In 2024, nature gave them a break after two years of severe draught and provided a delicate year like they had not seen for years. In March and April, they got 80 liters of rain, still moderate but much better. They had to continue watering the vines. During the summer the nights were cool, something they had not seen since 2021, but still they started harvesting at the end of August, a long and slow harvest that lasted for two months. At the end of the harvest, they got abundant rains that have extended to 2025. The wines have finesse and elegance, freshness and balance, and they have more color, as the cooler nights produce more coloring matter in the wines.
The 2023s are pretty, ethereal and approachable. The 2024s are more serious, a more vinous vintage with more extract and weight, wines for the long haul, with the contained energy and harmony of the great vintages.

Minerals and blue and red berries on the nose. The tannins are firm but minerally etched, giving structure and verticality to a long, tight and stony finish. Slightly chewy. Drink from 2026.

In the late eighties, Alvaro met René Barbier, one of the rediscoverers and 'godfathers' of the Priorat. This tipped him to take a look at the forgotten wine region. Alvaro found vineyards here with very old vines. He knew immediately that he had discovered the area to be able to make absolute top wines. In 1989 he bought his first Priorat vineyard 'Finca Dofi' and in 1993 L'Ermita, a vineyard that is now considered one of the very best of the entire Priorat and is named after the chapel at the top of the vineyard.
With wines such as Finca Dofi and the now legendary L'Ermita he gained world fame and put the Priorat on the map as a wine region. All vineyards are processed on the basis of biological and / or dynamic principles to obtain the highest possible quality grapes and wine with the most natural character. Alvaro Palacios is barely 40 when he seems to have accomplished everything. Coming from a family of winegrowers - owners of the Bodegas Palacios Ramondo - as a young man in his twenties he learned the trade with Christian Moueix in the castles of Petrus and Trotanoy. Then he followed the catalan René Barbier in Priorato. Deeply impressed by ancient land and their qualitative potential, he decides to mine his own vineyard in this God-forsaken hole, 135 km south-west of Barcelona. According to Palacios' own words, the general belief is that "the yield is too low, the land is unworkable and requires a lot of manual labor" and that the chance of profitability is small. The sequel shows that the skeptics were wrong. The first millésime, namely the Ermita 1993, was immediately mentioned in the "superstars" club of Spanish wines. This cuvée, consisting of 80 to 90% Grenache Vieilles Vignes balanced by Cabernet Sauvignon and Carignan Vieiles Vignes, has provoked exceptional reactions in Spain but also in the rest of the world. The ultra-modern company of Alvaro Palacios, dominating the village of Gratallops from the top of the hill, testifies to its decisive influence and ongoing efforts to revolutionize the Spanish wine industry. Alvaro Palacios, the architect of the success of the Ermita, summarizes with conviction: "The philosophy behind the vinification involves expressing the character of the terroir with the greatest transparency and purity."
The authoritative British wine magazine Decanter has named Alvaro Palacios Winemaker of the Year 2015. He is honored for his efforts to put Spain on the map in general and the regions of Bierzo and Priorat in particular worldwide. Palacios has illustrious predecessors. Last year, the brothers Perrin won from Chateau de Beaucastel, for which the honor went to Angelo Gaja, Robert Mondavi and the late Serge Hochar.
