the story of Algueira and the Cornamús
Bodega Algueira has been a pioneer in Ribeira Sacra for over 45 years and is among the producers strongly committed to indigenous grape varieties. Cornamús is their new white cuvée, born from the ambition to express the region's terroir in a pure and refined way. The wine is produced in a very limited edition, just 3,050 bottles of the 2023 vintage, and is being marketed internationally through La Place de Bordeaux. This emphasizes both its exclusivity and the high esteem it has acquired.
vineyard and terroir
The grapes come from the Aviador vineyard near Castro Caldelas, planted about 20 years ago. This vineyard lies at an altitude of 500 to 600 meters and is among the coolest and most expressive areas of the Ribeira Sacra. The soils consist of gneiss, quartz, and slate, which create tension and a pronounced minerality. Thanks to the southeast orientation, the grapes benefit optimally from the morning sun, while the cool nights preserve acidity and aromatic precision.
the 2023 harvest
The harvest was carried out entirely by hand in September 2023. The year yielded grapes with 13.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.2, and a remarkable 6 grams of acidity. This resulted in a wine with energy, balance, and intensity. The result is a wine that feels lively and fresh, with a ripeness perfectly supported by the natural tension.
vinification and maturation
Fermentation began in stainless steel tanks, using only indigenous yeasts. The wine then matured for 15 months in a 2,000-liter French foudre on its lees, with regular bâtonnage for added texture and depth. This approach results in a pure wine in which the terroir fully expresses itself, without excessive oak influence.
color, smell and taste
Cornamús 2023 displays a bright, straw-yellow color with greenish nuances. The aroma is refined and layered: notes of citrus, white flowers, and a hint of anise, complemented by hints of dried apple and chalk. On the palate, the wine is velvety smooth, with lively, perfectly integrated acidity. The profile is intense yet airy, with a long, mineral finish typical of the high-altitude plots of the Aviador vineyard.
reviews and scarcity
The wine has been praised by international critics. The Wine Advocate (RP 94) emphasized the nuance, freshness, and sharpness of Cornamús 2023, praising its balance of energy and detail. Another authoritative review called the wine "one of the finest white expressions from Ribeira Sacra," scoring 96 points. Its limited production and positioning through La Place de Bordeaux make this wine scarce and highly sought-after among collectors and lovers of characterful white wines.

After the red Dolio, they produced a new white to be sold at La Place de Bordeaux, the 2023 Cornamús. It's a Godello, mostly from Aviador, a steep vineyard planted 20 years ago on gneiss, quartz and slate soils, and a small percentage of other grapes. It fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and matured in a 2,000-liter oak foudre with lees for 15 months. The vineyard is from a cooler, higher-altitude zone (500+ meters) close to Castro Caldelas, and it delivered a vibrant wine with 13.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.2 coupled with six grams of acidity. The nose is different from the other whites. The wine comes through as more nuanced and detailed and is fresh and sharper, with a vibrant palate. 3,050 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2025.
Algueira, one of the pioneers in Ribeira Sacra, has revamped its portfolio and wines. I met with Fabio, second generation of the family in the project, and his father, Fernando, to get a better understanding of what they are doing. Basically, they are moving from varietal wines to blends of varieties from the same place. The process is gradual, and in the coming years, more of these new cuvées will be released. They work 21 hectares of vines from which they produce some 110,000 bottles, from some 110,000 kilos of their own grapes and some 50,000 kilos of purchased grapes. They produce young wines, a category they are reducing, but there is high demand in Galicia.
They've been looking for cooler places to plant their new vines with varieties like Brancellao, Merenzao, Sousón and Caíño, and those are helping with the warmer vintages. 2024 was a very good year, for them better than 2021, with enough and regular rain and a very good climate that allowed them to pick each variety the optimum moment, a year like in 2016 or 2015. The whites have a good punch. As for 2023, it was warm but less warm than 2022, and the key now is the rain; rain in August accelerates the harvest, and it was a good year, better than in 2022. 2022 was, of course, a very warm and dry year, with rushed ripeness and dehydration of the grapes, like 2017 and 2019; but this time, I didn't taste any wines from 2022. All the reds I tasted were from 2021, a year that was not easy due to a difficult, very warm June and then lower temperatures, the opposite of what you expect, but with a dry harvest that provided healthy grapes. The 2021 wines might have more longevity; they started closed and needed time, but it's good they are releasing them now.

The nose offers dried apple, chalk and a touch of aniseed. The palate is velvety and ethereal, with incisive, well-integrated acidity that perfectly complements the wine’s texture. This comes from a high-altitude site in Castro Caldelas, Ribeira Sacra, from a parcel known as the Aviator Vineyard, named after one of the inventors of radar who once owned it. Wijnhuis
Interessante feitjes over F. Algueira
