Description
the zuccardi family and finca canal uco
Zuccardi Valle de Uco is a family-owned winery internationally renowned as one of Argentina's leading winemakers. Under the leadership of Sebastián Zuccardi, the focus is entirely on terroir expression and authenticity. Finca Canal Uco is special: it was the first vineyard the family planted in the Uco Valley. Located in Paraje Altamira, at an altitude of 1,100 meters, the plot was irrigated for decades by the Canal Uco, the first irrigation canal to draw water from the Tunuyán River. This is where Zuccardi's journey to discover the identity of Altamira began, a terroir now recognized worldwide for its unique character.
the terroir of paraje altamira
The vineyards of Finca Canal Uco are situated on alluvial soils with gravel and large stones covered with calcareous material. These conditions ensure excellent drainage and give the wine its distinct minerality and tension. Poplar trees dot the vineyards, dominating the landscape, with the imposing Andes in the background. It is a place where the natural environment and viticulture blend harmoniously, and where Malbec finds its purest expression.
the 2022 harvest year
The 2022 vintage is remembered as cool and well-balanced, but also as one of the most challenging years of the past decade. Patience and precision in the vineyard allowed the grapes to ripen optimally. The result is a wine with remarkable freshness and texture, where red fruit and a lively, expressive style take center stage. This vintage demonstrates once again why Paraje Altamira is among the most prized terroirs in South America.
vinification and style
The grapes were hand-harvested and rigorously selected. After a gentle pressing, the must was gravity-fed into concrete vats, where fermentation took place with indigenous yeasts. The wine was aged entirely in concrete vats, without wood, thus preserving the purity and tension of Malbec. The style is concentrated, yet refined and vibrant.
color, smell and taste
The 2022 Finca Canal Uco opens with a deep bouquet of black and blue fruits, violets, and a mineral note of crushed stones. With time in the glass, floral and spicy nuances emerge, giving the wine added energy. On the palate, it is full and intense, yet remarkably elegant and vibrant. The concentrated core of dark fruit is balanced by a refined freshness and a mineral, layered finish. It is a powerful yet graceful expression of Altamira, showing more depth and power than the lighter style of Piedra Infinita, yet always remaining true to the finesse of the region.
reviews and storage potential
The international press responded enthusiastically. The Wine Advocate awarded this wine 96 points, praising its balance of concentration, elegance, and minerality. The 2022 combines intensity and refinement at a rare level. Its aging potential is excellent: the wine can develop between 2026 and 2036, revealing even more complexity and depth.

The 2022 Finca Canal Uco opens with a deep, lush bouquet of black and blue fruits, purple flowers and crushed stones that gradually develops a high-toned, herbal energy with time in the glass. It is graceful and lively on the palate, balancing dense, refined concentration with remarkable levity, seamlessly moving into a complex, mineral-driven finish anchored by a contained core of opaque fruits and a distinctly floral character. This is a decidedly bold expression of Altamira that admirably maintains the region's signature poise and finesse, offering a more intense, darker counterpoint to the textural lift of the Piedra Infinita bottlings. As always with Zuccardi's Malbec bottlings, it fermented in concrete vessels of various sizes with a high proportion of whole clusters.

This is ferric, with notes of dried herbs and subtle dark fruit. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, precise and focused, with tight fruit and well-delineated tannins. A savory touch follows through to the saline, persistent finish. Drink now or hold.

From: Andean Character: Uco Valley Reds (Aug 2025)
The 2022 Malbec Finca Canal Uco was made with 90% whole bunches. It opens with lavender, violet, field herbs, sage, Morello cherry and blackberry notes. This is highly expressive and elegant. The palate is compact, rich and chalky, with length and definition. The 2022 is a great wine from an excellent vintage.

Zuccardi’s story encapsulates the evolution of contemporary Argentinian wine. Just 20 years ago, Zuccardi was relatively unknown in the global market but has since emerged as a producer of some of Argentina’s most intriguing wines. In the 1980s, the second generation of the Zuccardi family, led by José Alberto Zuccardi, focused on creating a mass-market brand with Santa Julia, producing wines from eastern Mendoza. As the third generation took the reins in the 2000s, Sebastián Zuccardi and his R&D team developed an ambitious plan for vineyards in the Uco Valley, culminating in the construction of Bodega Piedra Infinita in 2016 in Paraje Altamira. This high-end project led to a division of operations between Bodega Santa Julia and Zuccardi Valle de Uco. Committed to exploring cooler climates, the Zuccardis redefined the Uco Valley's viticultural landscape, pioneering new Geographical Indications and championing terroir-driven approaches that are exemplified by an exceptional range of parcel wines. Zuccardi’s Concreto, Aluvial and Fincas Malbecs embody the house's signature pure, unoaked style.

The Zuccardi family came to Argentina from Italy at the end of the 19th century. In the 1950s, Alberto V. Zuccardi, the father of current director José Alberto Zuccardi, started an irrigation company; a good choice, because virtually no agriculture and arable farming can take place in Argentina without irrigation. To prove how well the irrigation company worked, Alberto planted the first vineyards in Maipú in 1963. Ten years later, he purchased a new vineyard site east of Mendoza. His son José Alberto has been in charge of the wine company since 1985. The company has since built up an international reputation. For example, they have been chosen several times as 'The World Best Vineyard' in South America and the wines are rated with the highest scores, with even regular outliers of 100 Parker points.
