Description
The Chardonnay wines of Vie de Roman are not in a hurry. This 100% Chardonnay comes from the Ciampagnis Vieris vineyard, which is completely planted with Chardonnay. The soil of this vineyard consists of pebbles and iron-rich (red) clay and the vines are on average 20 years old. After the harvest there is a cold maceration at 8 degrees, followed by a 22-day fermentation. The wine stays on the lees (on its yeast) for 8 months and no malolactic fermentation has taken place.
In the nose we smell ripe fruit like pear, but also chamomile and floral notes. In the mouth this beautiful wine has beautiful layers with good acidity and a fine balance. The wine is creamy and rich in buttery almond, stone fruit, honey, orange peel. At the same time the wine is surprisingly light, fresh and silky in texture. Gianfranco Gallo of Vie di Romans was one of the first winemakers to see the potential of the Friuli alluvial plain. He took over the estate from his father more than 30 years ago and in 1978 he launched his first wine. Since 1990, almost all of his wines have been mono-cépages (made from the same grape variety), each from a single vineyard. Gianfranco has a unique style of winemaking. He is very closely involved in every part of the process: from the work in the vineyard to the cellar. He keeps the yields per hectare as low as possible and works as organically as possible. His wines are first cold macerated, after which they are fermented in stainless steel tanks or oak barrels (tonneaux and barriques). In order to preserve the freshness (a good acidity) in the wine, he does not carry out malolactic fermentation. After alcoholic fermentation, the wines are aged for 8-9 months in stainless steel tanks or barriques on their 'lie'.

The Vie di Romans 2018 Friuli Isonzo Chardonnay Ciampagnis is beautifully contoured with aromas of peach, melon, honey and passion fruit. The bouquet is perfumed and bright, driving a long finish and silky consistency. Like most of the other whites in this portfolio, it ages on the lees (for nine months, in this case). Instead of oak, it completes this process in stainless steel for an anaerobic environment that serves to capture those direct and linear aromas. The wine concludes with a hint of dusty mineral or crushed stone that ties it to one of the most prominent characteristics of Friuli Venezia Giulia.
This is an outstanding set of new releases from Vie di Romans. These wines represent one of the greatest value to price propositions found anywhere in Italy. I cannot recommend them more enthusiastically. Gianfranco Gallo and his team have a few other exciting surprises in store. First is a new expression of Pinot Nero to debut with the 2016 vintage (which I have not yet been able to taste) that opens the estate portfolio to an early-ripening red grape that is well suited to the local climate. Speaking of climate change, the estate has also worked on a new project called I Climat (first made in 2015) that is a special selection of fruit from within the Chardonnay plantings of the Vie di Romans and the Ciampagnis parcels. Six wines representing these micro selections within the single vineyards were releases in 2019. The Merlot Voos dei Ciamps was not made in 2017.

The 2022 Chardonnay Ciampagnis is a seductress, tempting the imagination with a beguiling array of crushed nectarines infused with tropical citrus, hints of curry leaves and sweet, sweet spice. It impresses further with a balance of contrasts, mixing tart orchard fruits and notes of green citrus with cooling acidity and a flourish of apricot toward the close. Incredibly fresh and dramatically long, the Ciampagnis finishes with staining length and gently tannic, leaving a pleasantly tart sensation that lingers.

Utterly enticing from the first tilt of the glass and impossible to ignore, the 2022s from Vie di Romans display a combination of richness, depth of fruit and a core of zesty acidity that I find wildly attractive. These wines hail from an extremely warm and dry year with a healthy fruit set that resulted in larger clusters yet smaller berries. Limited use of drip irrigation was necessary to offset the drought conditions, yet was described by Matteo Gallo as “micro-irrigation”, giving only a tiny amount of water to vines to maintain their health. Cooling rain in late August into September brought balance to the equation, and while the Gallos harvested about ten days earlier than average, it still wasn’t as early as they originally feared it would be. Gallo explained that 2022 was one of their “Mediterranean-style vintages,” making comparisons to 2008 and 2018. I will say that the 2022s are ripe in style, with alcohol percentages in the 14 - 14.5% range, yet the harmony found within them is spellbinding. In fact, if I didn’t have the chance to taste these next to another vintage, their warm character wouldn’t have stood out at all. In the end, this is a fantastic set of wines that shouldn’t be missed by fans of Vie di Romans or Friuli itself. I also expect several of them to age remarkably well.

The house Vie di Romans is located in the Isonzo - the lower part of Friuli - between the Adriatic Sea and Collio. Because the country warms up during the day and cools down again at night, it often blows here. These conditions are ideal for wine growing. The wind quickly blows the grapes dry when wet, so they hardly need to be treated with pesticides.
Vie di Romans' Gianfranco Gallo was one of the first winemakers to see potential in the alluvial plain of Friuli. Thirty years ago he took over the domain from his father and in 1978 he released his first wine. Since 1990, almost all of his wines are monocépages (made from one and the same grape) from different vineyards. Gianfranco has its own style of wine making. He is particularly closely involved in every part of the process: from working in the vineyard to the cellar. He keeps the yields per hectare as low as possible and supervises the very strict use of pesticides - preferably none. The result is large, concentrated and complex wines that last a lifetime.
