Description
history of tenuta san guido and bolgheri region
Tenuta San Guido is located in Castagneto Carducci, in the Tuscan region of Bolgheri. Its history dates back to the 1940s, when Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, inspired by Bordeaux, planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc on the iconic Sassicaia soils. Initially, only for family and friends, the first commercial vintage wasn't released until 1968. His son Nicolò professionalized the enterprise, with the help of renowned oenologists, and laid the foundation for Sassicaia's international fame. In 1994, Sassicaia became the first and only wine in Italy with its own DOC: Bolgheri Sassicaia.
owners and family incisa della rocchetta
The Incisa della Rocchetta family has owned the estate since its founding. Originally a private project of Marchese Mario, the estate is now run by his son Nicolò and granddaughter Priscilla, who combine tradition with modernity. Their focus includes sustainable viticulture and expansion into higher, cooler areas for optimal grape quality.
terroir, climate and location bolgheri
Sassicaia's vineyards are situated on rolling hills near the Tyrrhenian Sea. The soils range from clay with limestone and pebbles to marl and sandstone, with good drainage and mineral complexity. The climate is Mediterranean, with warm days and cool nights, influenced by sea breezes that ensure slow and even ripening. These unique conditions contribute to the elegance, freshness, and refined structure of the wines.
grape blend, harvest and vinification of 2022 Sassicaia
The 2022 Sassicaia is composed of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Cabernet Franc. The grapes are harvested by hand at peak ripeness. After harvest, careful selection takes place, after which the grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures. Malolactic fermentation takes place entirely in steel, giving the wine its freshness and precision. The wine is then aged for 24 months in French oak barriques, some new and some used, followed by further aging in bottle before release.
color, aromas and flavor profile of 2022 Sassicaia
The 2022 vintage displays a deep ruby red color with a bright rim. On the nose, the wine presents a complex bouquet of red currant, black cherry, blackberry, and cassis, complemented by notes of cedar, graphite, lavender, sandalwood, and Mediterranean herbs such as thyme and rosemary.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a silky texture and refined acidity. The tannins are compact yet polished, giving the wine lovely tension and length. The 13.5% alcohol contributes to the elegant and cool mouthfeel. The wine is already expressive, but will continue to deepen and refine in the coming years.
Wine Advocate writes that the 2022 “a beautiful fruit profile with fresh blackberry, tart cherry and Mediterranean tones of blue rosemary blooms and lavender sachet... elegantly streamlined mouthfeel and its contained 13.5 % alcohol... accessible freshness... will improve with time. It requires patience.” James Suckling mentions “plenty of red currant, cedar, iron and terra cotta aromas… chewy but polished tannins… needs three or four years of bottle age… structured wine for the cellar.”
This is a magnum edition in OWC/1 - Even tastier, more festive and with a longer drinking window.

The Tenuta San Guido 2022 Bolgheri Sassicaia reveals a beautiful fruit profile with fresh blackberry, tart cherry and Mediterranean tones of blue rosemary blooms and lavender sachet. I tasted this wine several times over the course of a few months, and it has already shown a happy evolution coming into slow focus like the faint colors that emerge from a Polaroid photograph. Indeed, the bouquet appeared more closed just a short while ago. The wine's strongest suit is its elegantly streamlined mouthfeel and its contained 13.5% alcohol content. These qualities add to the silky cleanness of the mouthfeel and the accessible freshness of this vintage. I am confident that this bottle will improve with time. It requires patience.

From: 2025 Tuscany Preview (Feb 2025)
The 2022 Sassicaia is a very pretty, expressive wine. There’s a bit more Cabernet Sauvignon (and less Franc) in this year’s blend, and that really comes through in the wine’s flavor profile and slightly bruising tannins. Dark cherry, plum, leather, licorice, graphite and incense give the 2022 striking aromatic presence to match its rather brooding personality. There’s a bit of tension in the tannins that needs time to resolve. Yields were down about 20% because of intensely cold weather in spring, variable conditions during flowering and set, and then searing heat and drought throughout the summer.
- By Antonio Galloni on February 2025
Tenuta San Guido fared quite well in 2022 considering several episodes that created significant challenges. Severe cold weather approaching frost levels in April was a shock to vineyards in the plains and impacted potential yields. Rain and cold winds during flowering and set resulted in loose clusters, further lowering yields. Torrid heat arrived in July and August but appeared to have minimal impact, largely because vines were carrying reduced crops. Rain in mid-August followed by lower temperatures helped restore some balance. Harvest took place over a condensed period of 26 days, 8-9 fewer than normal. In the cellar, Estate Director Carlo Paoli and his team gave the 2022 lots anywhere from 14 days on the skins for the more delicate fruit to 18-22 days for the best parcels. Paoli opted for minimal délestages but with more pumpovers. The wine spent six months in neutral oak, after which 40% new barrels were introduced. Total time in oak was 23 months.

Tenuta San Guido was founded in the 1940s by Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta. The marchese was inspired by the wines of Bordeaux, especially those made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. In 1944 he planted these varieties in the Bolgheri, an area not traditionally associated with wine production at the time.
Terroir of Tenuta San Guido
The estate is located in Maremma on the Tuscan coast. The Tyrrhenian Sea provides a unique microclimate that is favorable for grape growing. Tenuta San Guido covers over 2,500 hectares, of which approximately 90 hectares (approximately 222 hectares) are devoted to vineyards. The vineyards are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and other varieties. The soil of Tenuta San Guido, located between 60 and 400 meters above sea level, is partly clayey with diverse morphological characteristics, including limestone-rich areas with Alberese, Gabbro and stone. The climate is unique, with hills from Bibbona to Castagneto offering protection from northeasterly winds. In summer the sea cools the vineyards, creating a microclimate that is characteristic of Tenuta San Guido.
Sassicaia
Sassicaia is the "flagship" of Tenuta San Guido and is considered the first Super Tuscan. It gained international fame and played a crucial role in defining Italian wines. The first vintage Sassicaia was produced in 1968, but was initially intended for private consumption. It wasn't until 1978 that Sassicaia was released commercially. Sassicaia is made primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon, with a small percentage of Cabernet Franc. The name "Sassicaia" comes from the Italian word "sassi", which means stones, as the vineyards are characterized by stony soils. The wine is known for its elegance, complexity and storage potential. It often receives high scores from critics and is highly sought after by collectors. Sassicaia played a crucial role in the recognition and elevation of Italian wines.
Production of Tenuta San Guido
In winemaking at Tenuta San Guido, the emphasis is on quality and traditional techniques. The estate strives to express the unique terroir of the Bolgheri region in its wines. Sassicaia is largely Cabernet Sauvignon with a smaller percentage of Cabernet Franc. Sassicaia is known for its elegance, complexity and potential. Sassicaia production varies from harvest year to harvest year, depending on factors such as weather conditions and quality. The exact number of bottles produced annually may fluctuate and specific production figures may not be readily available. Tenuta San Guido also produces other wines such as the Guidalberto, which is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Guidalberto is the estate's second wine and offers a more accessible and earlier drinking style than the Sassicaia. Finally, we have the Le Difese, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese. Le Difese is a more accessible and fruity wine, designed for earlier consumption.
Tenuta San Guido's olive oil?
In addition to its wines, Tenuta San Guido is known for the production of high-quality olive oil. The estate is located in Maremma (Tuscany) and many wineries in the region often have olive groves next to vineyards. They probably grow traditional Tuscan olive varieties such as Frantoio, Leccino and Moraiolo. The characteristics of the region's soil and climate, which contribute to the unique terroir of their wines, can also influence the flavor profile of their olive oil. The estate probably uses traditional and careful methods in the cultivation and harvesting of olives. The extraction process, usually carried out by cold pressing, is designed to preserve the quality and flavor of the olives. Like their approach to wine production, olive oil production can be limited, with an emphasis on quality over quantity.

Plenty of red currant, cedar, iron and terra cotta aromas follow through to a medium to full body with graphite, sandalwood, red currants and fresh Mediterranean herbs such as thyme and rosemary. The tannins are chewy but polished in texture. This is a Sassicaia that needs three or four years of bottle age to come together and soften. A structured wine for the cellar. Try after 2029.
