Description
In the middle of the Sicilian hills, southeast of Palermo, is one of the most famous wineries in Sicily, Regaleali. At first glance, the hills here inland look barren and dry. Once you arrive at the estate of the Tasca d'Almerita family, you will feel like you are in an oasis. The estate extends over 500 hectares, of which 320 are reserved for the vine. Here a special irrigation system provides the much-needed water. It is the only possibility to grow grapes here. Viticulture has a surprisingly long history here. The grape vine was successfully introduced here more than a hundred years ago. The key to success lies mainly in the height of the vineyards. It does not cool down at night in this climate by the sea. Here in the mountains, at an altitude of 450-700 meters above sea level, things are very different. It is pleasantly fresh here at night. The overnight cooling produces grapes with special fruit aromas.
The Bianco Regaleali 2022 comes out of the glass with a honeyed sweetness, mixing white flowers and chalk dust with crushed apples. It opens with a spicy burst of minerals and tart orchard fruit, all led by vibrant acidity. This ends with a medium length yet remarkably fresh, leaving a hint of candied lime that slowly fades. Wonderfully refreshing and elegant and with a very civilized alcohol percentage. Serve with grilled fish, white meat, salads and of course perfect as an aperitif. This is a 1.5 liter magnum. Even tastier!

The 2022 Bianco Regaleali lifts from the glass with a honeyed sweetness, mixing white flowers and chalk dust with crushed apples. Sicily can often seem more like its own continent than an island, with multiple climates, seasons beginning and ending at different times, vineyards planted at some of the highest elevations in the world or just a few meters from the Sea, and soils that vary from sand to volcanic ash or sheer rock. Of the major players, Tasca d'Almerita seems to have its finger on the pulse of nearly all of these diverse terroirs. The winemaking team oversees five distinct wineries and terroirs throughout the Island: 1. the original Tenuta Regaleali estate in the northern center of the island, 2. Tascante on Mount Etna’s north slope, 3. Capofaro on the island of Salina, where the focus is on Malvasia, 4. Sallier de La Tour in Monreale, which is home to the Syrah La Monaca project, and 5. Tenuta Whitaker, like an island that time forgot on Sicily’s west coast. What’s more, their portfolio consists of some of the best entry-level values (such as the 2022 Regaleali Bianco) and some of Sicily’s world-class wines (such as the Rosso del Conte or the Vigna San Francesco Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay). This year's tastings led to conversations focused on the arid and warm 2021 vintage, which Tasca d'Almerita did a fine job with. The 2021 Perricone Guarnaccio is a good example. In some cases, emergency irrigation was necessary due to the extreme conditions, which also resulted in a harvest that was, on average, ten days early. The late-ripening varieties (Nero d'Avola, Perricone, Cabernet Sauvignon and Nerello Mascalese) also ripened earlier but benefited from lower temperatures and light precipitation in September. That said, yields were down an average of 25%. It will be interesting to taste through the whole portfolio as the remaining wines are released.

The family's wines are marketed under the name Regaleali, the historical name of this region. Over the years, a number of domains have been added to the parent company Regaleali. Tenuta Capofaro on the island of Salina in the Aeolian archipelago, Tascante at the foot of Mount Etna, Sallier de La Tour in Monreale, and Fondazione Whitaker on the island of Mozia. Each Tenuta has its own personal characteristics, with characteristic characteristics of the environment where the grapes are planted, which you can taste in the different wines.
They boast of having their own, indigenous grape variety, the tasca grape. In addition, other grapes from the island are often used for the wines, such as the growing popularity of Nero d'Avola. A logical choice, because it is precisely the grapes from the island itself that are best able to withstand the hot and dry climate. But to really become known, more is needed. People here were well aware of this, so that in the mid-eighties it was decided to plant two internationally known grapes: Chardonnay for white and Cabernet-Sauvignon for red. Separate wines based on these grapes, planted in 1985, caused an international furore. After that, they also managed to make a name for themselves with the products based on their own grapes – fortunately. Regaleali's reputation was established. Deserved recognition for this special estate, which perfectly combines modern grapes and ditto forms of winemaking with tradition, stemming from a tradition of more than 150 years.
