Persoonlijke gegevens
Tedeschi Amarone delle Valpolicella Marne is a beautiful ruby-red wine with hints of vanilla and soft red fruits such as blackcurrants, cherries, and currants. Marne means marl, and the wine is named after the soil type and the fact that the vineyards are planted in a semicircle, 180 degrees facing the sun. The flavor is strong, full, and warmly structured, yet beautifully balanced. The finish confirms the hints of soft red fruit, which are long-lasting and very soft. The aroma is sultry and powerful, with notes of cherry stones, broad, currants and raisins, figs, and plums. The wine is delicious from the start, but after a few years (5 to 10 years), it improves even further. The grapes are hand-harvested in September and dried on plastic trays until January. During this drying process, the grapes lose approximately 30% of their moisture and 25% of their weight. The grapes are pressed in January, after which fermentation takes place in steel vats at a controlled temperature of 15°C. The wine is then aged in Slovenian oak barrels for two years, after which it is bottled. The aging process continues in the bottle for at least six months in the estate's cellars.
It's no wonder this is one of the best Amarones, and Tedeschi is one of those producers known for its consistently high quality. In terms of price/quality, it's almost impossible to find anything comparable in the Amarone range.
Marne means "marl," and the wine is named after the soil type and the fact that the vineyards are planted in a semicircle, 180 degrees facing the sun. Amarone is a dry wine made from dried grapes from the Valpolicella region. Grapes are used for drying that are almost, but not yet fully, ripe. They are usually picked at a sugar level that, upon fermentation, will produce an alcohol content and greater flavor intensity. The result is a unique dry red wine, exceptionally full-bodied and powerful. A good wine should have no more than about 10% potential alcohol. The skins are still firm at this stage, so the grapes remain intact during drying. Moreover, the acidity is still vibrant. Drying increases the sugar content, so that, upon fermentation, a higher alcohol content and greater flavor intensity are achieved. The result is a unique dry red wine, exceptionally full-bodied and powerful.

The Tedeschi 2021 Amarone della Valpolicella Marne 180 draws on fruit from across 25 hectares on clay marl soils at a cool 250 to 480 meters above sea level. You do notice the wine's deep inner power, starting off with a potent 16% alcohol content, but I can't help but remark on the delicate quality of the bouquet, which is embroidered with blackcurrant, lightly toasted spice and pressed red rose. There is red peppercorn and hints of toasted cumin seed over a big, but not overpowering, mouthfeel. This satisfying wine is ready to drink now. Production is 120,000 bottles.
The Tedeschi family has completed a winery-enlargement project, and they have added a bigger wine library to hold back vintages for late release. They have also created a new white wine made with a blend of Garganega, Riesling Renano and Chardonnay.

This Amarone is transparent and low key, with a delicate nose of fresh red fruit, bright savoriness and pepper. Medium- to full-bodied, it shows firm, chalky tannins with crisp, zesty acidity and an austere finish. Best after 2026.

Tedeschi is one of the undisputed highlights of the Valpolicella. Not only the wines from dried grapes, but also the 'normal' Valpolicellas may count as specialties of the family business Tedeschi. Father Renzo has now handed things over to his son Riccardo, who is now putting the finishing touches. This newly new generation gives the company some extra impulses, for example with a surprising new Valpolicella. Partly due to the maturation of eight or ten months in French oak, Riccardo creates an unrecognizable powerful Valpolicella, something completely different from the light wine we are used to. This wine comes from Fabriseria's own vineyard, from which a fantastic Amarone is harvested in peak years.
Tedeschi makes a wide range of wines, not only red, but also white from grapes from neighboring regions such as Soave and Bianco die Custoza. Some of the grapes are purchased from other producers. In that case, Tedeschi exercises intensive supervision during the growing season on the state of affairs in the vineyard. The best wines come from our own vineyards from the heart of the region, the Valpolicella Classico. With a few other producers, Tedeschi is committed to stricter rules for Valpolicella, Amarone and Recioto. It is rightly believed here that wines based on too high yields, originating from the fertile Po area, are actually unworthy of the DOC Valpolicella. And these wines certainly do not match the perfectionism of special Valpolicella producers such as Fratelli Tedeschi.
