Description
Rocas de Seña 2022 – The expressive second wine of an icon
Rocas de Seña 2022 is much more than a 'second wine'. It is a top wine in its own right, born from the same terroir and philosophy as the famous Seña. The vineyards in the Aconcagua Valley here provide a lively, energetic expression of the domain, with a slightly more playful and accessible character.
The 2022 is a harmonious blend of 38% Malbec, 25% Syrah, 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 7% Carmenère and 3% Grenache. The wine was aged for 22 months in French oak, 50% of which was new, and partly in large foudres, which provides elegance and refinement without losing its power.
In the glass, the Rocas de Seña 2022 is deep garnet red. The nose is seductive and intense: ripe red and black fruits, such as blackberries, black cherries and plums, complemented by notes of violets, black pepper, liquorice and a subtle hint of cocoa bean. Juicy and dynamic on the palate, with silky tannins, lively acidity and a long, mineral finish.
Ideal to combine with grilled meat, mushroom risotto, or roasted vegetables with Mediterranean herbs.

A unique blend of 33% Malbec, 25% Syrah, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Verdot, 7% Mourvèdre and 5% Grenache, aged 18 months in French barrique, the 2022 Rocas de Seña is a vibrant introduction to the Seña winemaking style, accurately displayed in the poised, graceful style this wine delivers. The nose is fresh and lively with a savory, herbal background, introducing a suave, precise, plush palate. While this is juicier and less tensely structured than the Seña itself, there is no lack of bracing tension that props up and elongates the finish. This is a beautiful and overperforming wine with a singular identity.

The 2022 Rocas de Seña blends 33% Malbec, 25% Syrah, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Verdot, 7% Mourvèdre and 5% Grenache. Aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, 40% of them new, this purplish wine offers notes of sour cherry, plum, herbs, violets and a deep oaky layer. Indulgent and juicy on the palate, it presents a flavorful profile full of energy—a savory and rich Chilean red. Rocas de Seña emerged in 2021 as a Bordeaux-inspired second wine of Seña, although it's not entirely sourced from the Seña vineyard.- By Joaquín Hidalgo on July 2024

The Viña Seña winery is located in Valle de Aconcagua. It was founded in 1995 by two charismatic winemakers: the Chilean Eduardo Chadwick, the owner of Viña Errazurriz and legendary Californian Robert Mondavi. What started as an ambitious dream at the time - producing a world-class wine in Chile - has now found countless followers. Nevertheless, the Seña remains in a class of its own. The futuristic bodega, designed by the Chilean star architect Germán del Sol, is spectacular. But the main property of the winery is the 42 hectares of vineyards, surrounded by breathtaking nature on various soils and planted with cabernet sauvignon, carmenère, merlot, cabernet franc, petit verdot, malbec and syrah. In short, the traditional varieties. The conditions for growing wine are so good here that you can work organically without tools. Needless to say, a winery like Viña Seña has the very best and most modern technology in the wine cellar. The responsible oenologist has been Francisco Baettig since 2003, a student of Michel Laroche and Michel Rolland. The latter has even improved the five most recent volumes of the Seña. The joint venture with Robert Mondavi ended in 2005, but the visionary's spirit is still ubiquitous. Viña Seña is one of the greatest icons of the wine world.
