the origin of Overture by Opus One

Founded in 1979 by Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi, Opus One is known worldwide for its iconic Napa Valley wine. In 1993, the winery introduced Overture, a second wine that follows the philosophy and precision of Opus One. The idea behind Overture was to create a wine that is more approachable yet retains the complexity, refinement, and cellaring value of Opus One. Selected parcels and strict selection during vinification ensure that Overture bears the same signature as the main wine, but with a more direct charm.

Napa Valley and the vineyards

Opus One's vineyards are located in Oakville, central Napa Valley, where a unique microclimate prevails. The cool influences of the bay and the warm, sunny days create ideal conditions for Bordeaux varietals. Overture uses grapes exclusively from its own estate vineyards. The vineyards are farmed organically, with a strong focus on balance and vine health. This contributes to the freshness and depth that characterizes Overture.

the 2022 harvest and vinification

The 2022 year began with above-average winter rainfall, followed by a dry spring and a challenging, warm harvest period. The experienced vineyard team took proactive measures to protect the grapes and irrigate selectively. Harvest took place between August 24th and September 26th, yielding grapes of exceptional quality. Overture 2022 is composed of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, supplemented with 3% Cabernet Franc, 1.5% Merlot, 1% Malbec, and 0.5% Petit Verdot. The wine underwent a 20-day skin maceration and was then aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels.

tasting notes from Overture 2022

The 2022 Overture opens with a seductive aromatic bouquet of bright cherries, blueberries, rose stems, and violets. Subtle notes of toasted almond and anise add depth. On the palate, the wine presents itself vibrantly and fruit-driven, with blackcurrant, blueberry, and wild cherry notes prominently. A crisp acidity adds tension and vibrancy, while the long, rounded finish is characterized by nuances of mocha and black tea. The result is a wine that is already inviting but can easily age for years to come.

style and storage potential

Overture 2022 combines immediate drinking pleasure with the potential to age beautifully. Unlike the main wine, Opus One, Overture is often approachable sooner, yet still possesses the depth and structure characteristic of the estate. The refined tannins, lively acidity, and layered aromas make this wine a versatile choice: suitable for those who want to enjoy now, but also appealing for those willing to wait a few years for added complexity.

In the early 1990s, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, owner of the world-renowned Château Mouton Rothschild, made a trip to Napa Valley. Impressed by the potential for winemaking in this Californian region, he asked local experts who he should meet. Without hesitation, Robert Mondavi was recommended, a pioneer in the American wine industry.

Robert Mondavi: the pioneer behind Opus One

Robert Mondavi, who started his own winery in Napa Valley in 1966 after leaving his family business, was known for his passion and drive for wine. His dream was to put Napa Valley on the map as a top wine region. When he met Baron Philippe de Rothschild, it sparked a unique opportunity to launch an extraordinary wine project: the birth of Opus One.

The fusion of Bordeaux and Napa Valley wine styles

In 1976, Mondavi and the baron met to discuss the details of their collaboration. This partnership resulted in the creation of a wine that combined the elegance of Bordeaux with the power of Napa Valley. The first wine, simply called “Opus,” was made in 1979 using a blend of Mondavi’s finest wines. In 1980, the joint venture was officially announced to the world, and the name “Opus One” was born.

The first successful auction of Opus One

Opus One quickly established itself as the first American ultra-premium wine. This was evident during a Napa Valley auction, where a case of Opus One fetched an impressive $24,000—at the time, the highest price ever paid for a Californian wine.

Opus One: a world-class vineyard

In 1991, Opus One's own winery was built, surrounded by 69 hectares of vineyards where varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec are cultivated. Every year, Opus One attracts around 60,000 visitors, who can visit the winery by appointment only.

Opus One is now recognized as one of the most iconic wines in the world. The collaboration between Mondavi and Rothschild has produced a wine that embodies both the elegance of Bordeaux and the rich flavors of Napa Valley. Opus One remains a benchmark for ultra-premium wines and is a must for any serious wine collector.
