the history and meaning of Masseto

Masseto is a vineyard and wine synonymous with absolute top quality in Tuscan viticulture. Located in Bolgheri, on the Tyrrhenian coast, the estate is among Italy's most prestigious wines. The name refers to the characteristic blue clay, locally called "massi," which plays a crucial role in the wine's unique style. This unique soil structure, combined with the maritime climate and the founders' vision, has made Masseto a cult wine beloved worldwide by collectors and connoisseurs. Since its first vintage in the 1980s, Masseto has evolved into a wine symbolizing elegance, power, and international allure.

the terroir and location in Bolgheri

The Masseto vineyards are situated on a hillside with a rich variety of soils, but the iconic blue clay forms the core of the terroir. This clay retains water and allows the grapes to ripen slowly, resulting in unparalleled concentration and depth. The Bolgheri climate, with its warm summers, sea breezes, and cool nights, offers the perfect balance between ripeness and freshness. These natural conditions form the basis for a Merlot that distinguishes itself from Bordeaux and elsewhere, and is prized for its complexity and ageing potential.

the 2022 harvest year in Tuscany

The year 2022 began with a normal winter and a cool, dry spring, resulting in a slightly delayed bud break. From late May onward, a long period of heat and drought followed, lasting approximately 75 days, with temperatures reaching 35°C. These conditions posed a challenge, but characteristic summer storms brought the necessary rain, bringing the vines back into balance. September offered ideal conditions with warm days and cool nights, allowing the grapes to ripen optimally and achieve a perfect balance of sugars, aromas, and tannins. The harvest began on September 6th with Merlot and concluded on October 9th with Cabernet Franc, with each plot being picked at the ideal time.

vinification and maturation of Masseto 2022

The grapes were harvested by hand into small 15-kilogram crates and, after careful selection, destemmed and gently crushed. Gravity-fed, the grapes were placed in concrete tanks, where fermentation began spontaneously with the help of indigenous yeasts. Each parcel was fermented separately at temperatures of 25-28°C, with regular remontages and délestages to extract color and aromas. Skin maceration lasted 21 to 28 days, depending on the parcel. Malolactic fermentation took place in 100% new French oak barriques. The individual lots were aged separately for the first year, after which the final blend was assembled. Masseto matured for a total of 24 months in oak, followed by an additional 12 months in bottle before release.

Lodovico Antinori already had a head start at birth. The Antinoris have been among the Florentine merchant nobility for centuries and already joined the wine buyers' guild in 1385. Since then, there has always been one member of the family in the wine trade. The family estates in Tuscany were greatly expanded in the 18th and 19th centuries and the family gained a lot of experience in the winery. At the beginning of this century, she founded an influential trading company. Marquis Lodovico worked for a while in the family business, but decided to go his own way in the early 1980s. He created an extensive vineyard on Tenuta dell'Ornelllaia, a family estate in Bolgheri on the Mediterranean, 96 km from Florence.

This part of the Maremma not only has a beautiful wild nature, but is also a fertile agricultural area, a region with great potential for wine production. Lodovico's uncle, Marquis Incisa della Rochetta, had already drawn Bolgheri's attention to the wine world with his pioneering work on Tenuta San Guido and with his Sassiciaia, now regarded as one of the world's greatest red wines.

Lodovico Antinori followed in his uncle's footsteps in nearby Ornellaia, although he makes a completely different type of wine. He learned from a number of international wine authorities that the character of the Bolgheri soil resembled that of St.-Émilion and Pomerol in Bordeaux was ideal for the production of quality wine. The special feature of the Ornellaia vineyard - for Italian standards - is the high percentage of merlot. The assembly for Antinori's top wine, the red Ornellaia, contains 40% merlot. However, this grape comes into its own best at the vigna veccia (old vines) of the winery. Since 1987, this plot has supplied the raw material for a 100% Merlot cuvée called the Masseto. The grapes for this wine have been picked under a sunny September sky. After the long fermentation of 18-20 days, the wine is naturally transferred to tanks. After which a maturing process in new Barriques. The result is a wine with structure, very pure fruit and a beautiful balance.
