the history and significance of Masseto
Masseto is a vineyard and wine synonymous with absolute top quality within Tuscan viticulture. The estate is located in Bolgheri, on the Tyrrhenian coast, and ranks among Italy's most prestigious wines. The name refers to the characteristic blue clay, locally known as 'massi', which plays a crucial role in the wine's unique style. This special soil structure, combined with the maritime climate and the founders' vision, has made Masseto a 'cult wine' loved worldwide by collectors and connoisseurs. Since the first vintage in the 1980s, Masseto has developed into a wine that symbolizes elegance, power, and international allure.
the terroir and the location in Bolgheri
The vineyards of Masseto are situated on a hill with a rich variety of soils, but the iconic blue clay forms the core of the terroir. This clay retains water and ensures slow ripening of the grapes, resulting in unprecedented concentration and depth. The climate of Bolgheri, with warm summers, sea breezes, and cool nights, offers the perfect balance between ripeness and freshness. These natural conditions form the basis for a Merlot that distinguishes itself from Bordeaux and elsewhere in the world, and which is renowned for its complexity and aging potential.
the 2022 vintage in Tuscany
The year 2022 began with a normal winter and a cool, dry spring, causing bud formation to start slightly later. From late May, a long period of heat and drought followed, lasting approximately 75 days, with temperatures reaching 35°C. These conditions presented a challenge, but characteristic summer storms brought the necessary rain, restoring the balance of the vines. September offered ideal conditions with warm days and cool nights, allowing the grapes to ripen optimally and achieving a perfect balance of sugars, aromas, and tannins. The harvest started on September 6 with Merlot and ended on October 9 with Cabernet Franc, with each plot being picked at the ideal moment.
vinification and aging of Masseto 2022
The grapes were harvested by hand in small 15-kilogram crates and, after careful selection, destemmed and gently crushed. Thanks to gravity, the grapes flowed into concrete tanks, where fermentation began spontaneously with the aid of indigenous yeasts. Each lot was fermented separately at temperatures of 25-28°C, with regular remontages and délestages to extract color and aromas. Skin maceration lasted 21 to 28 days, depending on the lot. Malolactic fermentation took place in barriques made of 100% new French oak. The individual batches were aged separately for the first year, after which the final blend was assembled. In total, Masseto aged 24 months in wood, followed by another 12 months of bottle aging before the wine was released commercially.
Tasting notes of Masseto 2022
Masseto 2022 reveals itself in the glass with a vibrant, ruby red color. The nose is rich and intense, with concentrated aromas of small red fruits, complemented by spicy and floral nuances. On the palate, the wine offers a powerful yet elegant structure, with a lush texture and deep layers of fruit and minerality. The tannins are refined and ripe, creating a harmonious balance between power and suppleness. The long finish confirms the Masseto signature: a unique combination of intensity and finesse that only this terroir can produce.
style and aging potential
Masseto 2022 is a wine that makes an impressive impression even when young, but which will reveal its full potential especially in the cellar. The perfect balance between power, ripe fruit, and elegant tannins gives the wine a long lifespan. With an aging potential of several decades, this vintage will continue to develop in the coming years, revealing new aromatic layers and refinement. For wine lovers and collectors, this is a wine that offers an unforgettable experience both now and in the distant future.

A solid and structured red with blackcurrant, chocolate and walnut aromas and underlying toasted wood. Medium- to full-bodied with chewy tannins and a chewy, savory finish. Hints of coconut and toasted oak. It’s muscular and toned. It needs time to soften. Best after 2028.

Toscana 2022 | $950
This red is both well-structured and framed with new oak nuances of vanilla, toast and resin, setting the stage for plum, blackberry, fruitcake, mineral and tobacco flavors. There’s a salty element interwoven throughout, along with a fluid feel. Offers fine grip on the lingering finish, so give the dense tannins some time to integrate. Merlot. Best from 2028 through 2043. 410 cases imported.

From: 2025 Tuscany Preview (Feb 2025)
The 2022 Masseto is soft, open-knit and relatively easygoing. The mid-weight structure of the year is very much in evidence in a wine that speaks more to finesse than power. Dark red cherry, plum, new leather, licorice and incense gradually open over time, supported by fine, silky tannins that wrap it all together in style. Masseto is typically much more potent in the early going, in 2022 the more refined style that has begun to emerge here along with the style of the year yield a Masseto that is quite elegant. Its balance is beyond reproach, especially in the integration of something that usually requires at least a few years in bottle.
- By Antonio Galloni on February 2025
It’s going to be very interesting to see how things play out in the coming years at Masseto. To be sure, the wines had already been trending away from power and opulence before Estate Director Axel Heinz moved back to his native Bordeaux in early 2023. His departure likely accelerated changes that were already underway. The new team headed by Winemaker Gaia Cinnirella and Production Manager Marco Balsimelli finished and blended the 2022s, wines that show a lighter style. How much of that is attributable to the vintage as opposed to the more restrained approach favored these days will become clearer in the future, hopefully through the lens of less stressful growing seasons.

Lodovico Antinori already had a head start at birth. The Antinoris have been among the Florentine merchant nobility for centuries and already joined the wine buyers' guild in 1385. Since then, there has always been one member of the family in the wine trade. The family estates in Tuscany were greatly expanded in the 18th and 19th centuries and the family gained a lot of experience in the winery. At the beginning of this century, she founded an influential trading company. Marquis Lodovico worked for a while in the family business, but decided to go his own way in the early 1980s. He created an extensive vineyard on Tenuta dell'Ornelllaia, a family estate in Bolgheri on the Mediterranean, 96 km from Florence.
This part of the Maremma not only has a beautiful wild nature, but is also a fertile agricultural area, a region with great potential for wine production. Lodovico's uncle, Marquis Incisa della Rochetta, had already drawn Bolgheri's attention to the wine world with his pioneering work on Tenuta San Guido and with his Sassiciaia, now regarded as one of the world's greatest red wines.
Lodovico Antinori followed in his uncle's footsteps in nearby Ornellaia, although he makes a completely different type of wine. He learned from a number of international wine authorities that the character of the Bolgheri soil resembled that of St.-Émilion and Pomerol in Bordeaux was ideal for the production of quality wine. The special feature of the Ornellaia vineyard - for Italian standards - is the high percentage of merlot. The assembly for Antinori's top wine, the red Ornellaia, contains 40% merlot. However, this grape comes into its own best at the vigna veccia (old vines) of the winery. Since 1987, this plot has supplied the raw material for a 100% Merlot cuvée called the Masseto. The grapes for this wine have been picked under a sunny September sky. After the long fermentation of 18-20 days, the wine is naturally transferred to tanks. After which a maturing process in new Barriques. The result is a wine with structure, very pure fruit and a beautiful balance.
