Description
In the 1960s, Giuseppe Inama, the founder of this renowned wine estate, started buying small parcels of vineyards in the heart of 'Soave Classico'. The area was originally planted with the old "Graecanicum" (native to Greece) variety. This name was subsequently converted to "Garganega" in the local dialect. His idea was to collect only top quality vineyards from old vine Garganega, and from them make a wine capable of restoring Soave's reputation. Today Inama counts as a reference for both white and red wines in Soave.
The Vulcaia and Vulcaia Fumé were the first wines produced in 1991 with the idea being to show the potential of the Soave Classico area for the Sauvignon blanc grape variety (which has already been famous in the adjacent Alto Adige). Not to make a copy, but something completely unique and Inama has succeeded and these Sauvignon's are sometimes called the Italian Chalbis. These Sauvignon blanc are grown on volcanic soil, which gives a completely new and different version of the French variety.
The Vulcaia Sauvignon del Veneto is a 100% Sauvignon and was the first wine produced by the estate in 1991 and since then Inama has been making a name for itself internationally with many high ratings from Gamberro Ross, Suckling and Parker. This Sauvignon is produced on volcanic soil, in the Soave Classico area on Monte Foscarino. After fermentation, the wine is aged sur lie in stainless steel. In the glass the wine has a lemon yellow color with notes of citrus and green apple in the nose, but now comes the special part. This is accompanied by a unique minerality and this gives a completely different character to the wine. More complex, less average. The wine also has a mineral character in the mouth with a nice freshness in the aftertaste.

From volcanic soils, the Inama 2020 Sauvignon Vulcaia Fumé absolutely offers great intensity and complexity with ashy soil and dried fruit aromas that give depth and drive to the bouquet. The wine is generous, even soft, although this northern Italian Sauvignon Blanc remains quite vertical in character. What stands out most here is the intensity and the complexity of the bouquet. Some 26,000 bottles were made.
Inama is releasing a new top-end wine (at a very ambitious price point) called Capital that will go to market in April 2024. They are also releasing a restyled version of their 100% Carménère, the 2018 Colli Berici Carmenere Riserva Oratorio di San Lorenzo. This new chapter dedicated to Carménère started about 20 years ago when Stefano Inama (and his enologist father Giuseppe) wanted the challenge of making an important red wine without the appassimento process that is used so frequently in the wine regions near Verona. Stefano looked to the Colli Berice, a group of hills in an alluvial plain near Vicenza that originated at the bottom of an ancient sea bed, as an ideal location for Bordeaux grapes. They began to recognize that the Veneto and Bordeaux shared certain common points, and they were especially attracted to the rich spiciness and the essentially Mediterranean taste profile of the Colli Berici. Carménère shows distinctive notes of mint, garden herb and lavender flower that underline this Mediterranean climate. Nurseries often confused the grape with Cabernet Franc, but ultimately only two other major Italian wineries, Tenuta San Leonardo in Trentino and Ca' del Bosco in Lombardy, are known for Carménère. Inama now becomes the third. Stefano's three sons, Matteo, Alessio and Luca, eventually all joined the family wine business. This is the second year that Inama is working with French consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt. "There is a generational change underway" says Matteo Inama. "We are all very excited because, as brothers, we are very united in our vision for wine. Our father urged us to travel the world and taste important wines in order to better understand the direction we wanted to take." Matteo joined the family company in 2010 and oversees management. His brother Alessio shares a similar role and joined in 2017. Luca, the youngest brother, joined in 2019 (although he made wine in 2018), and he works in the cellars.

A mid-weighted wine of considerable precision, power and soaring aromatic pungency. There is a herbal fleck and hint of Sauvignon's hedgerow signature, yet the impression is one of stone fruits, quince and mirabelle. The barrique, subtle but present, compresses and corrals the fruit. The finish is long and impressive. Drinkable now, but best from 2024.

Wijnhuis
Wine house Inama is located near the northern Italian city of Verona. The Inama family has been producing wines for more than 40 years and is the only activity that focuses entirely on them. Wijnhuis Inama is now run by Stefano and Guiseppe Inama, the 3rd generation, with the vision: producing various wines in which, despite the styles and trends of the moment, they mainly want to make wines where their vision of the beautiful country is sufficiently represented. . Therefore, an organic agricultural system is used because it produces better fruit. Wijnhuis Inama follows its own course and has therefore developed its own know-how, without consulting all kinds of experts and wine gurus. They believe in wine that generates emotions and therefore prefer to taste "blind".
