Description
The Bassus Pinot Noir is truly a Burgundy from the Utiel-Requena DOP. This Spanish "Burgundy" is a 100% Pinot Noir, originating from a vineyard on a limestone plateau. The climate is continental with Mediterranean influences. They are situated at an altitude of a few hundred meters, and there is a significant difference between day and night.
In the glass, the Bassus Pinot Noir has a cherry-red color with purple hues at the rim. On the nose, we smell red fruits such as cherry, cassis, and licorice, with attractive notes of spice and chestnut. On the palate, the wine is ripe and creamy, with delicate woody spices that are accessible, but the fruit is quite spicy. Crushed strawberries and raspberries emerge throughout the long finish, with very fine-grained, pleasant tannins, concluding with a complex finish. This is clearly a beautiful Pinot Noir with a respectful approach to terroir. In other words, they are not trying to copy Burgundy, but rather respect the beautiful, distinctive style of Pinot Noir from Utiel-Requena. The wine has repeatedly been voted the best Pinot Noir in Spain. The 2022 vintage has received excellent reviews and is also a wine that ages well.
Serve at 18°C. - Light sediment may be present and is natural, as this wine is made with minimal filtration to maximize quality. Perfect with cheese, fish, and meat, and highly recommended with mushrooms.
WINE MAKING
They pick the best grapes from low-yielding vines in our own vineyard. The grapes are collected in special boxes, each weighing 15 kg. We harvest only in the morning to keep the grapes at an optimal temperature until they reach the winery. Once at the winery, the full boxes are placed in cold rooms for three days at a temperature of -10°C.
They select the grapes box by box, after which we destem them and place them in new American oak barrels, each with a capacity of 400 liters, from which we have previously removed the top of the barrel.
A stainless steel panel is placed in each vat, with chilled water flowing through it, allowing the grapes to macerate cold for four days at 8°C. Every day, we manually immerse the cap and the grape skins, vat by vat, and once fermentation begins, we turn off the chilled water. The temperature in the vat can reach a maximum of 26°C during fermentation.
After 15 days, the grapes are placed in a pneumatic press for gentle pressing at a maximum pressure of 0.5 bar. The wine is aged for at least 10 months in new French Allier oak barrels. It is bottled after a very light filtration.

From: The Rambunctious Catalan Mediterranean and Beyond (Sep 2024)
The 2022 Pinot Noir Bassus comes from Utiel-Requena in Valencia. Purple in hue, it presents ash and marmalade aromas with hints of elderberry and blackberry, all set against a backdrop of cedar. Indulgent and rich, the velvety, juicy palate lingers on the fruit tones. This is a ripe, sun-born Pinot Noir that’s both well-calibrated and expressive.

The Hispano Suizas estate is the story of the conviction to make a dream come true.
The history of the Hispano Suizas winery
Hispano Suizas was founded in 2006 by three passionate winemakers with a shared vision to create a world-class winery. Pablo Ossorio, Rafael Navarro, and Marc Grin were united by their common passion for wine and their desire to introduce innovations in viticulture. With their extensive experience in both national and international wine markets, they transformed Hispano Suizas into a winery that gained significant recognition in a short time. The winery has been awarded numerous prizes and is loved by wine enthusiasts worldwide.
Their goal: To produce high-quality wine and make it accessible to the growing number of wine lovers. This requires daily care and attention to ensure the best way to produce exceptional wine. They have been meticulous and patient during production, knowing that the right combination can yield an exceptionally beautiful result. The ambition is high; producing masterful wine and making it accessible to the consumer are often conflicting goals.
The region where Hispano Suizas is located
Hispano Suizas is located in the Utiel-Requena region, Valencia, one of the most important wine areas in Spain. This region is part of the autonomous community of Valencia and enjoys an ideal climate for viticulture. With hot summers and cool nights, the area offers the perfect conditions for the development of complex and flavorful wines. The limestone-rich soil and the altitude of the vineyards contribute to the distinctive flavor profiles of the wines produced here.
Viticulture at Hispano Suizas
Hispano Suizas combines modern techniques with age-old methods to guarantee high quality. The wines grow in an area covering 61 hectares, 46 hectares of which surround the winery, while the remaining 15 hectares are only 500 meters away. The vineyards are meticulously maintained, with a focus on sustainable viticultural practices. The grapes are handpicked to ensure only the best quality is selected. Precision is maintained throughout the entire process, from grape cultivation to bottling, to ensure consistent quality.
What grape varieties are used?
Hispano Suizas uses a variety of grape types, both local and international. Some of the main grapes used include Bobal, a regional variety known for producing wines with deep color and robust flavor, and Tempranillo, renowned for its versatility and refinement. Additionally, grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir are cultivated to create unique blends and single varietals. For white wines, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay are used, resulting in fresh and aromatic products.
Approximately 4,000 vines grow per hectare, allowing the winery to work with great precision to cultivate and harvest the best quality grapes. The production per vine is only 2 kg. Due to the diversity of grapes grown, the harvest spans almost three months, starting with the cava in August and concluding with the red wines in October.
