Description
Domaine Henri Boillot and the house's modern course
Henri Boillot is considered one of the most recognizable names in the Côte d'Or. The house was built up over several generations, but its current signature is thanks to Henri Boillot's own determined and precise style. The focus is on terroir expression, tension, and layered structure, in both whites and reds. In recent years, the style has shifted towards greater freshness and precision, without losing its characteristic richness. This renewed balance makes the wines beloved by professional tasters, sommeliers, and Burgundy enthusiasts.
The vinification process is characterized by careful destemming, precise temperature control, and aging primarily in new oak, especially for the Grand Crus. At the same time, larger 350-liter barrels maintain tension and keep the wines tight and refined. The estate owns a mix of its own plots and long-standing partnerships with leading growers in Gevrey, Chambolle, Puligny, and Meursault. Chambertin-Clos de Bèze is among the most prestigious Grand Crus in the range, with a reputation for both power and finesse.
The character of Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
Located in the northern part of Gevrey-Chambertin, Clos de Bèze is known as one of Burgundy's most noble red terroirs. The vineyard is ideally situated on an east-facing slope, where morning sun and chalky soils enhance the finesse and tension of Pinot Noir. The topsoil consists of calcareous clay with abundant rock, resulting in wines with intensity, structure, and aromatic depth. This combination of power and elegance makes Clos de Bèze one of the most sought-after Grand Crus from the Côte de Nuits.
This location produces wines that are simultaneously ripe and fresh, with a distinct mineral undertone. In warm years, this yields complexity and volume, while in cooler periods, precision and aromatic clarity prevail. The 2022 vintage beautifully demonstrates how Clos de Bèze can combine power and detail in a single profile.
The Pinot Noir grape in the 2022 vintage
Pinot Noir flourished in 2022 thanks to a warm, dry, and sunny growing season. The grape developed deep color, concentration, and aromatic ripeness, while retaining ample acidity. The wine displays notes of blueberries, dark cherries, lavender, and a light spiciness typical of the Clos de Bèze terroir. The mineral structure, with nuances of stone, earth, and subtle floral accents, is also clearly present.
Because the grapes were completely destemmed, the tannin structure is pure and fine. The combination of ripeness and freshness creates a wine that already displays considerable intensity, yet without any overpowering weight. This makes Boillot's style recognizable and distinctive within Gevrey-Chambertin.
Harvest, vinification and maturation of this Grand Cru
The 2022 harvest shared some similarities with 2020, but the drought and peak heat made it necessary to work very carefully. Boillot chose a harvest time that maintained the balance between ripeness and tension. The grapes were completely destemmed, a characteristic of almost all of the house's red wines.
Fermentation was controlled, with gentle extraction and precise temperature control. For its Grand Crus, Boillot traditionally uses 100% new oak, intended to carry structure and complexity over decades. This choice of aging enhances the depth of Clos de Bèze without sacrificing its clarity. The aromatic power of the 2022 vintage effortlessly resists the oak, which blends seamlessly into the layered structure.
Colour, aroma and taste of Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 2022
In the glass, the wine displays a deep, intense ruby red color. The nose is impressive, with aromas of blue fruits, purple flowers, licorice, lavender, and a distinct mineral undertone. Subtle notes of stone, earth, and spice enhance the complex character.
On the palate, the wine is powerful, broad, and deep, yet tightly defined by vibrant acidity. The texture is full and layered, supported by firm yet refined tannins. Dark fruit, lavender, licorice, and a hint of menthol add tension and length. The finish is long, intense, and precise, with a distinct mineral note that emphasizes its provenance. While the wine is already impressive, it will develop considerably more elegance and detail with bottle aging.
Maturation potential and development
This Chambertin-Clos de Bèze is still in the early stages of development. Its structure, concentration, and tension indicate that the wine needs time to fully develop. From around 2030, the wine will reveal more softness, and the floral and mineral nuances will deepen. The combination of robust fruit, precise acidity, and the characteristic power of Clos de Bèze makes the 2022 particularly well-suited for extended aging.

The 2021 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru bursts with aromas of sweet plums and blackberries mingled with rose petals, orange zest and spices. Full-bodied, ample and fleshy, it's rich and layered, with lively acids, powdery tannins and a broad, saline finish.
Like many producers, Guillaume Boillot opted to acquire no new barrels in 2021, but he tells me that he acquired much less in 2022 too. The vintage, therefore, may prove to make something of a stylistic inflection point for this estate and maison, which appears to be shifting in the direction of a more chiseled, understated style than the rather nutty, toasty aesthetic for which it has long been known. Of course, the Henri Boillot brand has undergone transformations in the past too: the original Henri Boillot and his son Jean were especially celebrated red wine makers in Volnay; it was Jean's son, Henri, who launched a négociant label in 1995 and became celebrated for his white wines. Today, Guillaume Boillot has expanded the family's domaine holdings and concentrated his négociant operations, and he is now making as much a mark on the style of the Boillot whites as he already has on the style of the family's reds.

The 2022 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is an imposing young wine. A blast of blue fruit, lavender, licorice, gravel, crushed rock and menthol saturates the palate. This bruiser is going to need time to be at its best, but it is pretty impressive, even in the early going. - Antonio Galloni

This is an impressive set of 2022s from Henri Boillot. I tasted all the 2022s from tank prior to bottling. As much as the top wines are outstanding, I was especially struck by the quality of some of the more entry and mid-tier offerings. The Boillot wines offer notable textural richness and raciness, but in recent years, some of that has been tempered by a greater emphasis on freshness, a pretty appealing combination in my book.
The reds are done with fully destemmed fruit (in 2022, the Bonnes Mares is an exception) and see a fair amount of new oak, 50-75% for the 1er Crus and 100% for the Grand Crus. Whites are raised in 350L barrels, similarly 50% new for the 1er Crus and 100% new for the Grand Crus. Larger barrels here work so well in providing added tension to play off the richer style that is such a Boillot signature.
“Harvest dates in 2022 were pretty similar to 2020, but in 2020, we had no drought,” Boillot explained. “In 2022, heat spikes and drought resulted in some hydric stress and blocked ripening. As a result, the 2022s are nearly one percentage lower in alcohol than the 2020s. In retrospect, I think we picked the 2020s too late.”
Prior to my visit, I learned that Henri Boillot’s son, Guillaume, had left the family domaine to start his own winery. It will be interesting to see how things develop here. I have known Henri Boillot long enough to know he is a person of strong resolve and that he surely has a plan in place.
